I really enjoyed this well-written, fascinating book that peels off the studio makeup and shows the real man behind the quick psych soundbites of TV. As an entrepreneur, I was very intrigued to learn about the man's stumbles as well as his successes. The anecdotes in the book make it very readable and fun but I was looking for more and found it. I can't understand the reviews here that think the book has a negative agenda. Maybe the man's diehard fans expect that so see it where it doesn't exist. Don't be put off. If you want to learn about Dr. Phil, the real man and business wunderkind, this is your book.

Quite a businessman

All right: No, I'm not a huge Dr. Phil fan. My wife can't get enough of him though. But as a businessman, I'm amazed at all he has been able to accomplish in such a short time. I really read this book hoping to learn how he was able to build such an incredible empire of books, self-help tapes, seminars, TV show, diet products, and so forth. After reading this book, which was very entertaining, it's clear his success is a mix of intelligence, persistence, and luck. He apparently has been an entrepreneur since childhood, always looking for ways to make money. But he has failed at these endeavours as much as he has succeeded. Although it seems like everything he touches these days turns to gold, that wasn't always the case. So, while I still won't be watching his show, I have come to admire him more as a businessman from reading this book and hope to start using some of his success strategies to grow my own business. It's quite an inspirational read.

Sorry to ruin your day, but Dr. Phil is a Slimeball; just check the public record

This book was conducted by real award winning journalists if anyone would bother doing any research on the making of this book, not some tabloid reporters. None of the negative stories are refuted in the book because Dr. Phil chose not to respond to any of the allegations in the book. I'm sorry to brake the news to people but Dr. Phil is a slimeball. He really did leave the members of his gym high and dry and and really was severely disciplined by the the licensing board for his sexual exploits with one of his clients. Its all public record. Sure there are people with axes to grind, but not everyone can be lying. The overall portrait is not a mistake. He is a very ambitious manipulative man who will succeed at all costs. Money is king to him. Don't believe the hype. Believe the people who actually worked with him. The book is competetantly written and it is so great to see what a hyprocite this pedantic jerk really is.

About the Author
KAY SPRINKEL GRACE, CFRE, is an internationally acclaimed independent consultant, speaker, facilitator, and writer. After successful careers in journalism and education, she became a development professional in 1979, working in several organizations before starting her own consulting firm in 1987. Since then, she has worked as trainer or consultant to thousands of nonprofit volunteers and professionals in the areas of board and staff leadership, planning, and capital and annual fundraising. Read this fundraising book whether it serves as your intro to the field, or as nightcap to your many readings on the subject.

I love this book. It was one of the first books I ever read on fundraising for nonprofits. And it provided me with much theory on the subject. I have read quite a few books on the fundamentals of fundraising and the tactics used to raise funds, but when I was reading them I ALWAYS thought back to a lot of what I read in Ms. Grace's book. I highly recommend ANY fundraiser get a copy of this book and read it. It doesn't matter if it serves as your introduction to the field, or as a night cap to your many readings on the subject. This book is well written and outlined with substantial substance between its covers.

The book is only 12 chapters long. And I think it would still serve its purpose if chapters 6 (annual giving programs), 7 (capital campaigns), and 9 (maximizing board development and participation) were deleted. I thought these three chapters were wonderful. Don't get me wrong. But the power of this book is in the other chapters.

Beyond fundraising is about how a fundraiser should approach her job. It is about inviting investment, not about begging for a gift. It's about working for a nonprofit with a worthy cause that is doing what it should with the money it receives. It's about planning and not about winging it. It's about how to help society be a better place. It's also about staying up with the times.

The author has been working as a consultant to nonprofits for many years. She has helped countless nonprofits with their fundraising efforts. She has presented many seminars on fundraising fundamentals. And this book in a way is a summary of what she has covered in her seminars. The author has also written many published articles on fundraising. Accordingly, she is an authority on the subject. In my humble opinion, this book is her best effort and contribution to the field. 5 stars!

Gives a Strategic View of Every Aspect of Fundraising

I picked up this book just as the board of directors of the local theater group sent me to set up a campaign to raise capital for a new building. All of a sudden I was faced with the idea of raising lots of money instead of just the small amounts we need to put on individual productions.

To my surprise, although I guess I shouldn't have been, Chapter 7 is on Capital Campaigns. She summarizes them as: 'unique, occasional, exhausting, exciting, and productive; they focus organizations on a particular goal during a finite period of time and allow us to sharpen our sense of purpose and impact.' To that I can only say: Yup!

Ms. Grace has obviously been there, done that, not only in raising money for capital, but every other kind of fundraising activity as well.

This book is well written, and it positioned at a higher level than most fundraising books. By that I mean that she treats fundraising as almost an art form. Something where you don't need to feel like you're begging for a handout. Highly recommended.

About the Author
JANE C. NYLANDER is Director of Strawbery Banke Museum in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During her career, she's been a consultant to and president of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in Boston; has taught at the University of New Hampshire, Boston University, and New England College; and has been curator of textiles and ceramics at Old Sturbridge Village.

RICHARD C. NYLANDER is Chief Curator and Director of Collections for the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities in Boston. In 1990, he was appointed by President George H. W. Bush and, in 2002, was reappointed by President George W. Bush to serve on the Committee for the Preservation of the White House.

About the Author
Douglas J. Lucas is Executive Director and Head of CDO Research at UBS. He is also Chairman of The Bond Market Association's CDO Research Committee and ranked top three in CDO research in the Institutional Investor's fixed income analyst survey. Lucas has been involved in the CDO market for nearly two decades, having developed Moody's rating methodology for CDOs in 1989.

LAURIE S. GOODMAN, PhD, is Managing Director and co-Head of Global Fixed Income Research at UBS. She manages U.S. Securitized Products and Treasury/Agency/Derivatives Research. Goodman has worked on Wall Street for over twenty years and is well regarded by the investor community, having won more #1 slots on the Institutional Investor All-American Fixed Income Team than any other analyst.

FRANK J. FABOZZI, PhD, CFA, CPA, is an Adjunct Professor of Finance and Becton Fellow at Yale University's School of Management and a Fellow of the International Center for Finance. Fabozzi is the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Excellent Resource

Ms. Goodman's book is a much needed resource on CDOs. If you are just learning about the CDO market, Ms. Goodman clearly defines key terms and explains the structures from beginning to end. Those with extensive Wall Street experience will enjoy having one of the few well-written references available in the market. It is also a good marketing tool to give to potential investors. This is a good comprehensive reference guide.

Essential Reference

It seems oddly convenient that a negative review of the late Marcia Stigum's book, The Money Market, recommends The Repo Handbook by Moorad Choudhry. Ms. Goodman's book has a similar title to a book he has coming out and has been attacked with one star reviews that seem very similar to the attacks on books with similar titles and on Ms. Stigum's book. The envy is easy to understand, since this clearly written book with pleasing type-face is selling well and is a valuable resource.
Don't miss the chance to buy this excellent reference work on collateralized debt obligations.

Good background on CDOs

This book provides a lot of information on different types of CDOs. Although this book was written by multiple authors, the writing styles seem to blend pretty well. There are a lot of interesting historical information that is provided as well as a good amount of discussion on various methodologies. One drawback of this book is that it is written in 2006, which was at the height of the CDO market and prior to the recent financial crisis.

In my opinion, one of the more interesting topics in the book are the chapters on "default correlation." The authors do a good job explaining various methods of estimating default correlation. To me, the importance of understanding the correlation between assets during stressful conditions is probably the most important lesson that we should have learned from this crisis. In particular, the correlation of assets increases substantially during stressful conditions and that any risk analysis should also be performed over stressful market conditions and not just over a long horizon that would smooth out any stressful scenarios.

Another important thing to note is that the discussion in this book also points out the inefficiency of the CDO market. In particular, it shows inefficiencies in the ratings and pricing of emerging market CDOs. The authors discuss that emerging market CDOs have lower or similar risk to high-yield CDOs and yet provide a higher return potential. If these inefficiencies existed long enough that a book can be written about it, then there is simply a lack of understanding as to what these products are.

Great Resource of Consulting Work

As someone who has recently entered the consultation area of psychology, I naturally sought resources to expand my knowledge in this rapid developing area of the field of psychology. This book was one of the only books available which encompassed consultation skills for psychology. I strongly recommend this to anyone doing consulting work as it covers introductory concepts to more advanced topics. Although a bit steep in price, it is well worth it!

I honestly can't tell you if the book is worth it or not- I dropped the class so I no longer needed the book and returned it- a good tip I got from my professor is that the content of the book does not change much from edition to edition except for minor things so if you are going to get it or need the book save your self some $$ and get the older edition(S)
