A comprehensive look at decision making, a good tool for managers.

The book is acomprehensive and in depth look at Decision Making. A topic no person who is in charge of choices bigger than "what should I wear" should ignore. Bazerman walk you through Biases,Heuristics, Awareness and Ethics as well as touching on the relevant issues of Negotiations and some common investment mistakes.
Once the tools are at one's fingertips, the hues around you begin to change.
P.S Relying on this review may be flawed: there is an inherant bias: Out of all the people who read this book only those who recognized its use would bother writing a review. This then should not be taken as a REPRESENTATIVE of all reader's views.

Useful guide on how to make sound, smart decisions

ROBERT A. COPELAND, PhD, is Department Head of Enzymology and Mechanistic Pharmacology at GlaxoSmithKline, and Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Drug developers need this book

Books and reviews on drug design are often disappointing, but Evaluation of Enzyme Inhibitors in Drug Discovery is excellent; it is a book that should be on the shelves of anyone involved in rational drug development, and available to anyone interested in understanding how successful drugs work. It starts by explaining why enzymes are appropriate targets for a drug design in the first place, and goes on to emphasize that inhibiting an enzyme and producing the intended effect on the whole organism is not a trivial matter. As the author remarks, "dogmatic arguments that lead to a priori predictions of what will work best in a biological context more often than not reflect an incomplete understanding".

If rational drug design is ever to become a reality it will involve knowledge of much more than three-dimensional structure, though this sometimes seems to be the only aspect considered. It requires, of course, knowledge of the different kinds of inhibition and how the inhibitor affects enzyme activity at different concentrations of substrates and products. In addition, it requires some knowledge of the metabolic context in which the inhibited enzyme is embedded: if it has almost no flux control then inhibiting it -- even to a high degree -- may have almost no effect on the flux through it (though it may still have large effects on the metabolite concentrations around it). finally it requires understanding of what makes some molecules "drug-like", and others not: it is no use identifying a superb inhibitor of the ideal enzyme if there is no way of delivering it to the target. Copeland deals with all of these points, and others, in an appropriately elementary way. Apart from giving much more information about inhibition than he did in Enzymes (Wiley-Interscience, 2000), here he takes a more leisurely pace and the book should not offer any serious difficulty to anyone wanting to master the subject.

As the author explains, there is much more to enzyme inhibition than just competitive inhibition: some successful drugs are indeed competitive inhibitors, Methotrexate and Viagra among them, but others are not; Finasteride, for example, used for treating benign hypertrophy of the prostate, is an uncompetitive inhibitor of steroid 5alpha-reductase. Classifying inhibitors thus needs more than crude measures of IC50 values, and if these are used at all they need to be used in conjunction with knowledge of how they relate to inhibition constants.

Analysis of the kind set out in the book is essential for understanding why enzyme inhibitors work as drugs, but the sceptical reader may wonder how much of it is post hoc rationalization, and how much was actually used for discovering the drugs. Let us consider the 26 enzyme inhibitors that have become successful drugs that are listed in Chapter 1, from Acetazolamide, an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase used to treat glaucoma, to Viagra, an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase that is now familiar to everyone. Modern Drug Discovery claimed in 1998 that "Viagra was discovered using a rational drug design approach", but was it? It was not originally conceived as a drug for treating erectile dysfunction, and its usefulness for this discovered almost by chance when it was noticed that some men who participated in clinical trials as a treatment for angina pectoris reported unexpected effects. Even as an inhibitor for phosphodiesterase, Viagra was found by making variations on the structure of Zaprinast, a weak inhibitor that had failed to become a useful anti-allergy treatment. There is little in this history to suggest rational drug design.

There are many good points about this book, but it is often difficult to find them, because the index is very poor. For example, there is a discussion of the characteristics of "drug-like" molecules (Lipinski's rules, etc.), but don't expect to learn this from the index; the only way to find it is to leaf through the pages. Fortunately it comes early in the book, but there are other equally important and equally secret topics later on. In other respects this is a fine achievement, a book that can be enthusiastically recommended.

Excellent explanations of enzyme inhibition

Half of the drugs in use today work by inhibiting enzymes. This book explains the multiple ways that drugs can inhibit enzymes, and how to design experiments to determine the mode of inhibition. The book has lots of equations, but it isn't a mathematical book. All the concepts are clearly explained apart from the math. The writing flows nicely, so you can read it all to get an overview of the field. But it is clearly organized, with great headings, so it is also easy to use as a reference book.

Enzyme Kinetics

I have found this book very useful. If you have to use enzyme kinetics, and analyze the data, then you really should have this book. That it is recommended by Prof Cornish-Bowden attests to its accuracy.

Personally I find this topic difficult, but this book is well written, and I have a much better understanding of kinetics after getting this book.

I have read close to 5 major books on warehousing, including Excellence in Warehouse Managment. I found most to be little more than books defining warehouse terminology. Bragg has clear ideas to improve warehousing (inventory management). "Nearly 200" says the dustjacket. I'd buy this one again.

This book appears to be for companies with large warehouses. My company has a small area designated as a mezzanine to keep products both company owned and customer owned. I am, however, able to pull some ideas from this book.

This book is not very good

This book promotes itself as a comprehensive resource for understanding consultation within a school setting. I am a school counselor, and I would not recommend it. While it may be some support for someone considering entering the school counseling profession, most of what I found inside of it should be common knowledge in any school counseling graduate program. Simply stated, if you don't pick up the information in this book during your graduate coursework, you should absolutely get it during your practicum or internship.

The chapters really don't offer that much as far as information that isn't common to most school counselors. For example, Chapter 6, Workshops and Educational Programs, is nothing more than product reviews of several parenting programs that are on the market. Very little information in this chapter, and I'd go so far to question why it is even in the book other than to provide filler.

The opportunities to provide consultation discussed in Chapter 7 are simply details on how a student support team is organized and suggestions on how to set up a referral process. Again, most of this details programs that are already in place in most schools. Unless one is entering a school that has never done anything in support of a student, or unless the counselor has never set foot in a school, this is probably already in place.

Throughout the book, ideas are suggested that involve a excessive amounts of instructional time, after-school time, or that stretch over the course of several days. Perhaps this may work in some districts, but in many, time is sacred and the counselor is simply not going to get that much time to conduct training sessions. There are simply to many other duties that have to be attended to during the day. Again, the idea seems geared more toward an idealistic school setting and not real life.

Finally, since I mentioned filler earlier... Appendix A discusses Adlerian Theory, the apparent theory of choice for these authors, and Appendix B and C are the ethical standards for school counselors. Just what I want to find in a $50 dollar book.. Ethical standards that are free for download or otherwise readily available.

Overall, I really think this book is horrible and not worth the approximate $50.00 price tag that it has. If you have to have it for a class, buy it used... otherwise, save yourself the trouble of even owning it and just pay attention in your grad classes.

I am in my 2nd semester for an MA in School Guidance Counseling. The text offers examples of dialogue to use for different situations. It is an easy and informative read. This text would also be good for teachers starting out their careers.

This is an excellent book for anyone involved in Category Management, seasoned pros and newbies alike.

It is not surprising to see of the companies and people involved in this book. It's disappointing to get through it and not hear from some of the great companies doing great work today. More people should share what they're doing.

The authors take great care to list the different tools used by each company. Kind in mind who who sponsored the book and realize that their are other tools at work in this industry.

Mark it up and keep it around. It has a great index and will serve as a good reference tool.

You must read it

if you are not a retail guru, but if you're an executive involved with retail, fast moving consumer goods, shopper understanding, category management, trade promotions, and so on, you must read it. It's clear, ordered, easy to read, and best of all is edited by ACNielsen, wich is the global leader in FMCG information.

At the end of your reading you'll understand the importance of shoppers in the FMCG business, wich is the functionallity of decision trees, what's next beyond category management (trip management). Why is so important to understand shopper's behavior to achieve succesful exhibits and boost your sales.
