Do yourself a favor...

This book is a must have. Covers just about, if not, everything you need to know about Branding. Not a big fan of how Chapter 3 was written. Let's just say the Professor who wrote/contributed to Chapter 3 felt the need to flex his English skills - unecessary over the top vocabulary. Chapter 4 is the best chapter - Competitive Brand Strategies. Uber came to mind this entire chapter regarding their pioneer advantage. If you wish to have a solid grasp of Branding, do yourself a favor and buy this book.

An Invaluable Single Source of Information and Counsel

The last time I checked, Amazon and its online partner Borders sell more than 8,000 different books on the general subject of brands and brand management. Presumably this number will continue to increase as organizations become more actively involved with marketing initiatives which effectively leverage one or more brands.

What we have here is one of the volumes which comprise a series produced by faculty members at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. It was edited by Alice M. Tybout and Tim Calkins who co-authored the Preface; Philip Kotler provides the Foreword and Calkins the Introduction.

I feel obligated to suggest at the outset that none of the volumes in this series is an "easy read." On the contrary, each requires but will generously reward a careful consideration of its contents which, in this volume, are carefully organized within four Sections:

I (Chapters 1-3) Key Branding Concepts

II (Chapters 4-6) Strategies for Building and Leveraging Brands

III (Chapters 7-13) From Strategy to Implementation

IV (Chapters 14-20) Branding Insights from Senior Managers

There are five themes which are rigorously examined through the narrative: brand positioning, brand design, brand meaning, leveraging a brand, creating a brand-driven organization, and then three chapters are devoted to issues on measurement. I especially appreciate the provision of various frameworks, check-lists (e.g. the five-step process for designing a brand on page 38), "Figures" (e.g Whirlpool's Touch Point Wheel" on page 230), and other tools to assist the reader with clarifying her or his thoughts about branding in terms the specific needs and interests of his or her organization.

Although taken out of context, the following three excerpts are representative of the high quality of thinking and writing throughout this book:

"The word brand has a tripartite etymology. One emphasis clusters around burning, with connotations both of fiery consummation and of banking the hearth. A second emphasis clusters around marking, with connotations of ownership and indelibility, as well as paradoxical allusions to intrinsic essence, whether or merit or stigma. A third emphasis clusters around the delivery of, or deliverance from, danger (stoke, anneal, cauterize; conflagration, possession, aggression). The brand embodies the transformative heat of passion, properly tended. It is bestowed and it is earned. The brand bespeaks the forging of a family." John F. Sherry, Jr. on "Brand Meaning," page 41.

"There are several sources of pioneering advantage. All are derived from the pioneer's unique role in creating the category, in defining the dimensions on which brands compete, and in influencing the importance buyers attach to perceived differences. Simply put, the pioneer plays a unique role... It is perceived different from others, and that perception is valuable in several ways....A pioneer can become the standard against which later entrants are judged simply by establishing the category and being viewed as the near-ideal product. This strong association with the product category means that virtually all other products in the category are now judged by the established standard. Standards in markets take at least two forms -- psychological standards and technological standards." Gregory S. Carpenter and Kent Nakamoto on "Competitive Strategies," pages 75 and 77.

"The differences between technology markets and CPG [consumer packaged goods] markets from a branding standpoint can be categorized into differences related to the market, differences related to products, differences related to customer behavior, and differences related to channels and ecosystems. I use this categorization scheme to discuss the challenges and principles of branding in technology markets. Figure 11.1 [pages 204 and 205] summarizes the key contextual dimensions that form the basis of contrasting brands in technology markets with branding in CPG markets." This book will be of greatest value to those senior-level executives who need to know their customers better and how to get closer to them, who need expert counsel on how to differentiate what they offer and then with formulating appropriate branding strategies which position their offering, not only as relevant to the given target market but indeed superior in value to whatever is offered by competitors.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out Kellogg on Marketing edited by Dawn Iacobucci and Kellogg on Integrated Marketing co-edited by David Dranove and Sonia Marciano. I also recommend Harvard Business Review on Brand Management, Alina Wheeler's Designing Brand Identity, William J. A Thorough Analysis on Branding

I picked up "Kellogg on Branding" from Amazon because my company was embarking on a branding exercise. As part of the team, I wanted to get well-versed in the theoretical and practical implications of branding and brand management. Little did I realize that I have picked up a gem.

First and foremost, this is an academic book, some of which may cause a reader to gloss over, especially if they are just looking for easy bullet point overviews. Nonetheless, I found this to be a goldmine of information.

A collection of articles and research by some of the by faculty at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University covering a range of issues. Specifically, the book covers branding concepts in the first three chapters, strategies for building and leveraging brands, strategy to implimentation, and branding insights.

I found the last chapters (14 through 20) to be the most interesting as they were written by senior executives at firms. Whether it was a discussion on there individual companies leveraged their brand, to using their brand internally, it was the more "Practical" section of the book.

Thats not to diminish the other sections of the book. In one collection we have a guide for branding in the tech sector, to managing a brand portfolio, to design and positioning. Each with a wealth of information for anyone looking at their own companies and trying to make sense of branding, brand strategy and brand management.

Needless to say, this volume armed me quite well for our branding initiatives.

Again, this is a detailed book, and not a gloss over. If you can read this with the attention to detail "Kellogg on Branding" offers, then you will be well rewarded. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.

Regardless, I highly recommend.

About the Author
PHILIPPE JORION is Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Irvine. Good enough for what it claims

The people who have written reviews primarily have gripes that they didn't pass. They must have thought the book was THE ONLY RESOURCE they would need. I used this book and I did pass the exam. It wasn't the only resource I used though.

The publishers of the book even claim that using only this book will not help you pass the exam. It is an OVERVIEW text. It is a primer to help you delve into the material. This book will not substitute the large amount of qualitative reading and equation memorization that you'll need to do in order to pass.

I give it a 4 mainly because the book does what it claims and because some of the more negative reviews are too far-fetched. Remember to buy the version that applies to your test year.

Comprehensive Risk Management Coverage

Jorion's book covers an enormous amount of material that will be useful for people practicing risk management. If readers of this book become proficient on the subjects it covers then it will be a building point for more focused books from Wiley and other publishers.

I have gone back to this book to review subjects in risk management that I am not required to know immediately in work situations. The questions that are included from the FRM exam are useful tests of your understanding after having read sections and are in need of a check to see what you have gained in knowledge.

I Wish I Hadn't

This book cost me the FRM last year. I made it the center of my study program. The book's writing is atrocious; there are gaps in what is covered; and there are many errors and misstatements. I wasted six weeks struggling with this book. When I finally realized my mistake, it was too late to rescue my study program, and I failed the exam. I am very disillusioned with Jorion and GARP. This shoddy, overpriced paperback makes me think they are in it just for the money. This year, I have signed up for the CFA exam instead. So far, I have been very impressed with their study materials.

About the Author
William E. Boyce received his B.A. degree in Mathematics from Rhodes College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is currently the Edward P. Hamilton Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Science Education (Department of Mathematical Sciences) at Rensselaer. He is the author of numerous technical papers in boundary value problems and random differential equations and their applications. He is the author of several textbooks including two differential equations texts, and is the coauthor (with M.H. Holmes, J.G. Ecker, andW.L. Siegmann) of a text on using Maple to explore Calculus. He is also coauthor (with R.L. Borrelli and C.S. Coleman) of Differential Equations Laboratory Workbook (Wiley 1992), which received the EDUCOMBest Mathematics Curricular InnovationAward in 1993. Professor Boyce was a member of the NSF-sponsored CODEE (Consortium for Ordinary Differential Equations Experiments) that led to the widely-acclaimed ODE Architect. He has also been active in curriculum innovation and reform. Among other things, he was the initiator of the “Computers in Calculus” project at Rensselaer, partially supported by the NSF. In 1991 he received theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished FacultyAward given by Rensselaer.

Richard C. DiPrima (deceased) received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He joined the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after holding research positions at MIT, Harvard, and Hughes Aircraft. He held the Eliza Ricketts Foundation Professorship of Mathematics at Rensselaer, was a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, and the American Physical Society. He was also a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer, as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME. In 1980, he was the recipient of theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award given by Rensselaer. He received Fulbright fellowships in 1964–65 and 1983 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1982–83. He was the author of numerous technical papers in hydrodynamic stability and lubrication theory and two texts on differential equations and boundary value problems. Professor DiPrima died on September 10, 1984.

list of intro DE books you should be considering

I used an earlier version of Boyce & DiPrima and hated it like most everyone else here. (Why is it that all the crappy textbooks live on, edition-after-edition, inflicted on a new batch of students year-after-year?) To get through my DE course I used the book by Dennis G. Zill. It was pretty good. Zill's book is still around. Comes in several different flavors.

For those looking for a better book than Boyce/Diprima I've listed all recent, introductory DE books I could find on amazon:

"An Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations" by James C. Robinson (ISBN 0521533910). This provides a very gentle introduction. does not cover Laplace transforms.

Shepley L. Ross has 2 books: an intro book (Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations, 4th Edition ISBN: 978-0-471-09881-2) and a regular text (Differential Equations, 3rd Edition, ISBN: 978-0-471-03294-6) which have garnered good reviews.

Can also try "Elementary Differential Equations" by Kohler and Johnson.

Physical Science/Engineering/applications oriented:

2 books by John Polking (one on DEs and one on ODEs/BVPs)
Elementary Differential Equations by William Trench
Fundamentals of Differential Equations by Nagle, Saff & Snider
An Introduction to Differential Equations and Their Applications by Stanley J. Farlow (ISBN 048644595X). He's also got a PDE book.

For the engineers: you might want to skip a separate DE book altogether and get a combined book. Something like Linear Algebra and Differential Equations by Peterson and Sochacki

Of course, Dover Publications has inexpensively reprinted boatloads of classic math books including these DE titles:

"Ordinary Differential Equations" by Morris Tenenbaum, Harry Pollard. (rated highly)

Wow. I guess I'm in the Minority!

This is my favorite ODE book. Ever. But I guess I'm in the minority on this. I owned the 5th edition. My ex owned the 7th edition. Her book was a bit more flashy -- fancy graphics and whatnot were sort of distracting, but all the things that I love about my copy were true (for me) about her copy.

I really like that they approach the subject via a wonderfully balanced viewpoint -- they do a tightrope walk of being rigorous and making the book useful for us physicists, and our cousins, the engineers.

They go through practical theory but leave out the more exotic elements of ODE theory.

I found the examples to be extremely sufficient. Sometimes generous. I can either assume that something awful happened to the 8th edition or that the other reviewers are the type of undergrads who think that a book should have so many examples worked out that if their hw problem isn't worked out for them, the book sucks.

If you really want a zillion examples worked out, I have one word for you: Schaum's. Read it. Love it.

This is a textbook. It presents theory, it gives a few examples, and you're left to practise applying the theory.

I found the text to be very well written. They're not verbose, but they're not terse either. Very nice balance. The explanations and insights are masterfully written.

Where the book really shines is that it's a practical "how to" book. They cram a lot of different techniques into a nice relatively lightweight book.

The section of PDEs is sufficient and appropriate for the intended level of reader.

I love their problem selection. In fact, what I love most about their problems is that they often have "teaching problems". You learn solution techniques through a series of well crafted end of the chapter exercises.

Personally, I think this is the single best undergrad ODE book on the market.

Professors - Do the right thing - do not assign this book for your course

TLDR - If you see this book, run. Switch classes. Don't cheat yourself out of the incredible utility of differential equations by attempting to learn here. It isn't going to happen.

The authors clearly know what they are talking about, but they fail miserably in relating it. They try to tackle some very lofty subjects for this level of instruction, but they leave out key steps that are not obvious to the uninitiated. They also have a terrible habit of working the next chapter's topics into the previous chapter's problems. This may seem like a good idea in theory, but it fails in practice. If you are struggling with the material AFTER reading the chapter, how on Earth could you do well before you read about it? Hundreds of years of piecemeal discoveries and theorems are simply not going to occur to the average student. It is not a realistic expectation, and it does not benefit any party.

Save yourself a lot of time and aggravation by getting another book or choosing a different class that doesn't use it. Professors, please consider another text with more approachable examples.

About the Author
William E. Boyce received his B.A. degree in Mathematics from Rhodes College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He is currently the Edward P. Hamilton Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Science Education (Department of Mathematical Sciences) at Rensselaer. He is the author of numerous technical papers in boundary value problems and random differential equations and their applications. He is the author of several textbooks including two differential equations texts, and is the coauthor (with M.H. Holmes, J.G. Ecker, andW.L. Siegmann) of a text on using Maple to explore Calculus. He is also coauthor (with R.L. Borrelli and C.S. Coleman) of Differential Equations Laboratory Workbook (Wiley 1992), which received the EDUCOMBest Mathematics Curricular InnovationAward in 1993. Professor Boyce was a member of the NSF-sponsored CODEE (Consortium for Ordinary Differential Equations Experiments) that led to the widely-acclaimed ODE Architect. He has also been active in curriculum innovation and reform. Among other things, he was the initiator of the “Computers in Calculus” project at Rensselaer, partially supported by the NSF. In 1991 he received theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished FacultyAward given by Rensselaer.

Richard C. DiPrima (deceased) received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon University. He joined the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute after holding research positions at MIT, Harvard, and Hughes Aircraft. He held the Eliza Ricketts Foundation Professorship of Mathematics at Rensselaer, was a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Mechanics, and the American Physical Society. He was also a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Rensselaer, as President of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME. In 1980, he was the recipient of theWilliam H.Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award given by Rensselaer. He received Fulbright fellowships in 1964–65 and 1983 and a Guggenheim fellowship in 1982–83. He was the author of numerous technical papers in hydrodynamic stability and lubrication theory and two texts on differential equations and boundary value problems. Professor DiPrima died on September 10, 1984.

This text is definitely for advanced math students. On the exciting scale, this text would rank with most others. The text is written fairly competently and is easy to follow given a introductory background in math (Calc I & II). I've found much of the material interesting (for it being math) and have actually enjoyed doing the reading assignment for my class (Introduction to Differential Equations).

list of intro DE books you should be considering

I used an earlier version of Boyce & DiPrima and hated it like most everyone else here. (Why is it that all the crappy textbooks live on, edition-after-edition, inflicted on a new batch of students year-after-year?) To get through my DE course I used the book by Dennis G. Zill. It was pretty good. Zill's book is still around. Comes in several different flavors.

For those looking for a better book than Boyce/Diprima I've listed all recent, introductory DE books I could find on amazon:

"An Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations" by James C. Robinson (ISBN 0521533910). This provides a very gentle introduction. does not cover Laplace transforms.

Shepley L. Ross has 2 books: an intro book (Introduction to Ordinary Differential Equations, 4th Edition ISBN: 978-0-471-09881-2) and a regular text (Differential Equations, 3rd Edition, ISBN: 978-0-471-03294-6) which have garnered good reviews.

Can also try "Elementary Differential Equations" by Kohler and Johnson.

Physical Science/Engineering/applications oriented:

2 books by John Polking (one on DEs and one on ODEs/BVPs)
Elementary Differential Equations by William Trench
Fundamentals of Differential Equations by Nagle, Saff & Snider

Best Preparation for Executives by Good Guy Authors

I bought this book several weeks ago when I learned I would be taking over our corporate outsourcing initiative (without much outsourcing governance education besides an MBA and purchasing experience).

Brown & Wilson's book took me step by step in actionable phases that brought me and our $148M company into the age of successful outsourcing. We no longer guess what outsourcing programs and projects are profitable or sensible. We no longer have vendors leading us into agreements we are unfamiliar with. Our service level agreements are tight and our relationships have true benchmarks.

I also recently read via Associated Press that Brown & Wilson's consulting firm is donating community economic re-development advice to the regions hit hard by the Hurricanes to attract outsourcing jobs to US areas rebuilding businesses.

Their efforts seems to be atruistic in bringing outsourcing jobs back, not advocating offshoring as most the other outsourcing authors do. The article said they have a track record of helping revive areas of US employment (Indian reservations, inner cities, rural poor) by orchestrating the events necessary to accomplish such a huge feat.

I highly recommend the book and expect we'll hear more about how these good guys are making business sense where we most need it.

Best Two Books on Outsourcing & Global Economics I Found

Kudo's to Thomas Friedman for bringing the much needed attention to the impending business issues of offshoring, globalization and outsourcing. Through interviewing influential executives at top technology companies in India and the US in particular, he has crafted a first-person journalist's trip report intertwined with personal anecdotes. The book has been critiqued as being a "how I spent my summer vacation" treatment of this serious subject of globalization which takes several hours to move through, this book is for you.

A more practically written and concise new book that I couldn't put down until I finished -- in just 2 hours is THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING by Doug Brown & Dr Scott Wilson. I dog-earred and highlighted and post-it noted this perfect outsourcing reference manual and it sits directly on my desk for regular user.

THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING has just been released in the last six months through Wiley Publishers, and it begins where Friedman left off. Not only does it encapsulate Friedman's message in just a few short pages, it goes on to provide thought-provoking ideas for action.

It's written by a business and technology experts and has contributions from a dozen other experts from the outsourcing and offshoring hot spots, including Shanghai, Taipei, Bangalore, Sydney, London, Singapore, and more. If you don't have the time to wade through Friedman's almost 500 pages, or if you have already and want to know more, I highly recommend THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING.

Actually, together, they may an awesome team of books in your business arsenal.

OUTSOURCING CLASSICS = MULTISOURCING (Cohen) + THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING (Brown & Wilson)

As Amazon recommended, I bought both MULTISOURCING (Cohen) and THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING (Brown & Wilson) when searching for books to train our corporate officers and managers this coming spring on outsourcing. Looking through most every outsourcing book for sale via Amazon, I found that these two books complement each other superbly and provide the most comprehensive yet teachable subject matter that managers need.

Giant Kudos to the Amazon team for truly assessing all these books' strenghts and weaknesses and selecting these two which are on my desk, not my bookshelf! We have placed a company order for several dozen through Amazon corporate sales as our inservice required texts.

FYI, Where MULTISOURCING gives its reader a holistic and theoretical super-impression of where outsourcing is moving, THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING delivers the unencumbered "How-To" and resources that managers need.

I felt it necessary to write this review because I read that here on Amazon.com, some off-target/negative reviews produced by the authors of other available outsourcing books (most of whom get their consulting revenues from foreign and offshore outsourcing vendors) against these two books...This is hugely ridiculous! I can't comment on the behavior, but I can assure other buyers that these two are probably the best business books on the current and forthcoming states of management practice I have evaluated in 12 years in corporate human resources development.

I also wanted to note that in order for an Amazon book reviewer to have their name publicized rather than use an alias, I would have to put in my credit card number. I am opposed to this, but indeed have used my real name. Thank you, again, for the Amazon recommendation for these fine manuals. Keep up the great work. These two classiscs will remain classics as far as outsourcing management is concerned. Len

It felt good the first time --and still good for the firstimer

There is nothing detailed or even intellectually satisfying in this book. But I think the one thing that it does do is, (as another reviewer put it,) is to cheerlead. This book was exciting as it was the first book that I had ready on the subject. But now that I have done numerous transactions in real estate and handled millions of dollars worth of real estate and having experienced the ups and downs, DON"T DO REAL ESTATE AFTER READING THIS BOOK!!!!!!!! This book is so simplistic one does not know where to begin. For instance, Mr. Dolf, doesn't delve into possible set-backs seriously enough. He assumes that as long as you buy in a densely populated area, it is a safe bet. And he gives an example of "California" as one such place. There are many contingencies too numerous to list that destroys such a simplistic theory. Markets do have their time and in real estate, if you are stuck in a loan and a property you can't move, you are illiquid and repositioning is not as easy as it might seem. Therefore, being incapable of averting financial ruin is mmore difficult.

Real Estate is something that is experienced. You can't just "buy by the beach" and then just earn equity growth because no one is making beach front. And how many people have the kind of money that allows their first deal to be a fixer in Malibu. His other formula to look at a hundred-pick three-and buy one is really idiotic. There are no formulas in a mechanism that is continually shifting. The real estate industry is continually evolving. There is always an element of risk involved in any purchase. And buying single family homes is a mistake unless you are in a rapidly appreciating environment simply because there is less income potential to hold notes. And the more units, the better the rate (commercial properties). Also, the diversity of loan products just about allows anyone to buy their own home--no need to rent. None of this is even mentioned in these pages.

Then why three stars? Because, fundamentally getting excited is half the battle. And this book WAS exciting. Its simplicity is actually very appealing. In essence, he is right about one thing: Real estate is about debt acquisition ultimately. The SELECTION of the type and structure of debt and the INSTRUMENT against which a deed of trust is written is all-important. But Dolf miserably fails on these issues.There is a tremendous lack of serious dialogue and this book is simply an attempt to sell less than a mediocre work to a less than average society. For God's sake--HE TELLS YOU ABOUT THIS ONE HOUSE SOMEWHERE AND HE PAINTED IT AND LIKE MADE $20,000!! WOWIE!! $20k! You can buy gas for six whole months. Truth is, REAL ESTATE IS MORE COMPLICATED than one would ever assume. If you want something simple....buy an Index fund.

If you want to raise your I.Q. read another book. If you want to understand the simplest of simple items in real estate and get excited, read this book as a starter. But promise yourself you will wait before you jump into a ridiculous formula of see 100:make offers on three and buy one by the beach you cant afford!

Excellent advice for beginners

This book was excellent. I am a "beginner" real estate investor at best (I just purchased my first rental home) and this book was EXACTLY what I needed. Dolf's advice was to the point and inspiring. If I had to pick at something it would be his references to his webpage where you can purchase some of his software and other books. But then again, I would probably do the same.

If you still have doubts on why real estate is the best place to invest your money then you need to read this book!

Excellent Real Estate Book by someone who knows.......

I have to admit that I am a fan of the Rich Dad series of books. I also have to admit that Dolf de Roos was not initially my favorite author in the advisor series. When I came across the first edition of this book, I thought it was slim and the weakest of the series.

Then I bought Dolf de Roos Real Estate College Program at Costco which includes a audio version of this book. I was impressed both by Dolf de Roos knowledge and ability to explain complicated real estate terminology in easy layman terms. He made learning easy and fun.

I went out and bought the revised version of this book and love it. Having the printed version makes looking up information easy. I play the cd's in my car to reinvorce the material.

Also recommend The ABC's of Real Estate Investing by another Rich Dad advisor Ken McElroy and Nothing Down 2000's by Robert Allen.
