Better than your average textbook

I bought this for an online class. I have taken other online classes and found the books hard to follow when studying on my own. This book, though,was not hard to follow. The diagrams in the book are the most valuable because they give a good visual image that makes the information easier to remember. I took this 4 hour course in 4 weeks and with a different book, I would have had trouble.

Flex Format Edition

This paperback edition is just as good as the hardcover edition as far as I know. There's also a less-known edition called the flex format edition that's supposedly identical but fits in a 3-ring binder. The ISBN for that one is 978-0471752523 and they look to be even cheaper than this one ($40).

A bit simplistic: doesn't examine some of the pitfalls

I'm a former Nordstrom employee. There are a few things wrong right off the bat with the book: the employee manual is not just one page anymore. Second, the book only examines the pros of Nordstrom. There are a few notations of "competition" but Spector and McCarthy do not examine the reality of cut throat competition on the sales floor. Depending on the management of the store, it can be either harnessed or turned negative. Some of the team examples no longer exist (like nominating employees for recognition). Too much is left to independent departmen managers: and many lack formal training. A good manager may or may not be a good sales person but that is how Nordstrom promotes. I do agree that customer service (be it the sales staff, the buyers, or actual cutomers) is critical in any role but there is little examination of the culture of Nordstrom that can make it a good learning experience but not a good career trajectory.

Spector and McCarthy seem a bit reluctant to take of some of the shine of the silver bagged company: it's too bad. There is a lot of good information for early career types or sales managers but there is a lot of Kool Aid. And don't believe all the heroic tales in the book: it's a problem for Nordstrom employees. They are 100% commissioned and expected to do some of these crazy stunts which is time off the floor and thus out of his/her pocket. Read for the frame work; ignore the mythology.

Great stories of the best Cust. Service around

I was very excited to read this book after enjoying Spector's book on Amazon.com. The author did not disapoint and I enjoyed this book much more than his last!

The best part of the book are the examples used. In addition to Nordstrom, he has also incorporated examples from another large company, and a few small and midsize companies as well. No matter what industry you are in, or the size of your firm...you will get value out of this book.

It's a fast read and would be great to share with co-workers and/or employee's.

Inspirational and an easy reading

Nordstrom is considered a visionary company by James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras (in Built to Last). This book explains what Nordstrom does in order to achieve such a rank.
The book is full of stories on what the company does to foster customer service, what managers do and what sales representatives do. The stories are called "heroics" and you will find lots of them throughout the book.
The Nordstrom culture is very similar to Disney's, so no wonder both are considered visionary by the authors of Built to Last.
Nice reading and inspirational. Go for it!

Where it's at in economics today

About 1975, when Ross Miller and I were grad students in economics, there was a consensus "economic view of the world." Economists who had to deal with the real world -- policy makers and development types -- didn't really believe it, but the mainstream did. Not only believed it, but took it for granted.
That's not true today. The consensus is fragmenting. If you want to understand the underpinnings of this intellectual shift, read Ross's book. It's written clearly, even excitingly, with well-chosen examples. And it is written by a real economist, who's trying to understand what's right and what's wrong about how we think about the economic world.

Miller provides in-depth insight into past financial market events and by doing so sheds light on what might happen today on several fronts. Three examples: His discussion of the 1998 Long-Term Capital Management debacle is relevant for understanding current risks in hedge funds. His analysis of 1980s portfolio insurance should add to concerns about the proliferation of capital guaranteed notes. His take on market circuit breakers, which he describes as regulatory folly, raises the question of what would happen today if these were triggered.

While the book reviews a large and varied body of academic research, focusing heavily on the experimental economics that the author subscribes to, it offers practical conclusions that anybody interested in finance will find worthwhile. As a financial journalist, I found it very useful.

However, because it covers a lot of ground, readers may want to pick and choose what they want to read from the index. The chapter and section headings, while entertaining, are not good guides for this purpose.

About the Author
HAROLD KERZNER, Ph.D., Senior Executive Director with International Institute of Learning (IIL), is currently Professor of Systems Management at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio and President of Project Management Associates, Inc., a consulting and training firm that conducts seminars for leading U.S. and international corporations. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois and the 1998 Distinguished Service Award from Utah State University, where he taught engineering and business administration, respectively. The Northeast Ohio Chapter of the Project Management Institute has honored Dr. Kerzner by instituting the Kerzner Award for Project Management Excellence.

Well Written, Worth the price

This was one of my 9 textbooks for a graduate Advanced Project Management course at Florida State University. It was the only book that I have read on the Project Management Maturity Model. That aside, it is laid out well, is easy to understand, and is small and compact enough to take with you. I have read this through once and have it out on my desk as a continual reference. I am working to create a PMO at my office and this book is a helpful resource.

This book needs a facelift. This information is becoming dated rather quickly.

This book is in serious need of a better design. The information contained therein is invaluable and Kerzner is revered in the field of PM. It is extremely boring to look at even though the information is engaging and well-developed. The book isn't even properly divided into discernible chapters with proper headings/headnotes/footnotes/runners/titles/page numbers. The index in the back is horrible. Good luck being able to find a particular Figure or Table on demand without having to always refer to the Table of Contents. I can't tell you how awful this book looks.

This edition of the book is 10 years old and in desperate need of an update. Kerzner talks a lot about communication and the importance of communication in modern business; however, this book hasn't been updated since every human on the planet put a smartphone in his pocket. A lot has changed in the field of instantaneous, global communication practices since 2005.

I learned more from this book and the two associated graduate-level courses which required its use than I did from all the other courses that semester combined.

The beauty of this book and Kerzner's PMMM (now called KPM3, I think) is that he focuses as much (or more) on the satisfaction of the labor force/worker, as he does on big, shrewd, miserly, heartless, faceless American businesses. Any time an industry expert believes workers are more than cattle, I support his ideas. That mindset is not nearly as common as you might think.

This is a great text for any PM professional to learn how to continually improve upon your PMO's guidelines and processes. I needed this textbook to complete a course for my MBA specialty. A coworker of mine knew Kerzner's work and borrowed my printed textbook; I left it with her since I owned the Amazon Kindle version for PC of this same text.

Good and useful text for PM professionals.

didn't use the book to much for the class. the condition was great i liked the book and wish it was used more. the contexts of the cases is helpful to know what to do for the hospitality industry situation, and they get you to really use your critical thanking skills. over all i liked the book, and i would ask your instructor if you really need it for the class, cause all the cases I did for my class 2 out of the book were posted up on my online class page.

Not for beginners

Some of the negative reviews sounded like they wanted a short book that said "Do the following and you will be very rich very quick". Guess what, that book doesn't exist and will never exist. Options are very useful if used properly but to use them properly you need a deep understanding of risk and the mechanics of options. These concepts are mathematical in nature and so is this book. For a variety of reasons just buying a bunch of options is a suckers game as many have learned, but used to reduce risk as a hedge is a different matter. McMillan's other book Options as a Strategic Investment would be the place to start learning. This advanced text explains many things professionals are doing and gives insight to why the markets behave as they do. If you want to get involved with options you need to understand this book thoroughly.

Intermediate to Expert text on Options

Having never traded options before but having an engineering background, I found the text as dry as my college engineering textbooks, but as informative as ever. I finally got the hang of it by the last chapter, and found it more informative reading the second time.
I CANNOT IMAGINE TRADING OPTIONS W/O A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE CONCEPTS HE PRESENTS. It is not, however, intuitive to the novice options trader. It may take reading a second time to get the hang of it.

A Must Read

Lawrence G. McMillan is the author of the famous title "Options as a Strategic Investment". What's the difference between the two books? This one is entirely different: it teaches option trading in actual examples, and is not intended to be a complete definition of strategies. This is a book in which the application of options to actual trading situations is discussed. It assumes that you are already familiar with the stock market to some extent and have traded stocks but not options. There are plenty of real trading examples, many of them taken from the author's trading experience. In addition, there are a number of stories--some humorous, some more on the tragic side, that illustrate the rewards and pitfalls of trading, especially trading options. If you like the analysis of historic events in the markets, I can also recommend "The Only Three Questions That Count" by Ken Fisher, in addition to this book. If you like the history even more, I can recommend the trilogy: Financier, Titan and The Stoic by Theodore Dreiser. Seriously!

Pros:
- explains in a very interesting way the history of listed options and other historic events;
- humorous, vivid, entertaining and amusing;
- unique advises from the author's experience;
- uncovers the predictive power of options in a very detailed manner with lots of case studies
- analyses the seasonality of volatility, The January effect, Late-October Buy Point, and other patterns and dependences;
- excellent chapters about the trading philosophy;

Cons:
- Chapters about selecting the right broker, getting the quotes and understanding the order flow are outdated;
- An important technique of selling puts as a way of buying the underlying security is not covered in this book, but covered in the others first book "Options as a Strategic Investment". Warren Buffett obtains most of his stock holdings through selling puts. He got most of his Coca-Cola Holdings this way, and, recently, Burlington Northern Santa Fe. If you are interested in this technique, read chapter 19 of "Options as a Strategic Investment";
- Doesn't have a single references to other books.

There are many books about options, but this is a must read.

The anatomy of the short sale-

Bill O'Neal has done a great deal in this brief book (It was originally a pamplet)esplaining the correct time ot sell stocks short. Contrary to popular opinion you should not attempt to sell short at a stocks 52 week high. You first wait for the initial pull back and for the stock to fail on 3 attempted rallies, you should short on the 3rd failed rally, this is the point of proven weakness. O'Neal suggests shorting previous market leaders when they have fallen out of favor.He backs up his teachings with over 120 real historical bar charts showing volume and showing when to short on each one. You can double your chances as a trader by trading both sides of the market. I highly recommend this book to all traders along with all of O'Neal's other books and Investor's Business Daily. I am very glad Mr. O'Neal decided to share his research and experience with the general public.

Extremely Disappointing

William O'Neil is perhaps the one individual responsible for my development as a trader and investor. I consider How to Make Money in Stocks to be one of the most valuable books on stock trading. I cannot say the same for this one. In fact, I found it to be a complete waste of both my time and money. There was not a single new or insightful bit of information in the text. If I could give it 0 stars I would.

Well below O'Neil's other work ..

Is basically a brief introduction and outline and then many examples. The examples are all mostly from the 2000 decline in the market. So the book outlines a very specific approach and highlights examples that fit that approach.

Given the cost of the book , I don't mind having it in my library. So far the best book on short selling was written by Justin Mamis . The book by Kathryn Staley is great as well. The focus there is how to look at the balance sheets and corporate shenanigans. Both these books are not light reading though.
