About the Author
FRANK J. FABOZZI, PhD, CFA, CPA, is the Frederick Frank Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale University's School of Management. He is also a Fellow of the International Center for Finance at Yale University. Prior to joining the Yale faculty, Fabozzi was a visiting professor of finance in the Sloan School of Management at MIT. Fabozzi has authored and edited many acclaimed books in finance and is also the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

STEVEN V. MANN, PhD, is Professor of Finance at the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. He has coauthored four previous books and numerous articles in the area of investments, primarily fixed-income securities and derivatives. Mann also works as a consultant to investment/commercial banks and has conducted training programs for financial institutions throughout the United States.

an education about repos

The chapters are written by various people, often active in companies involved in creating or trading these securities or repos. Thus, an author from Countrywide Securities, and another from Ernst and Young. Also, the book is very recent.

Hence, you get a good education in current understanding and practices involving the lending of securities. There is a natural progression in logic, from the base securities to options and repos that are derivatives of this base. Plus, several chapters address the key issue of what are the various types of risks involved, and how to quantify these.

I found the book to be excellent and informative. Being that Sec Lending and Repo for me personally have been learned in a second hand manner when rolling out Global One at UBS NA in 98, and setting up Martini Repo's Back End for Fortis, understanding these business models without such a book as Frank Fabozzi's had been challenging.

I have given it one read, and will reread, as any book I view should be read at least twice if not more. In particular, I enjoyed seeing the evolution of Securities Lending. I had expected to see more on Settlement and Clearing and plan to look for books on this too.

Two of the questions provoked in the first read was 'How much is the Industry Actually Leveraged'. In other words, in terms of the possible shorting on the loan itself from the Lender; and if the Lender is also a Borrower from another Lender; and what operation controls should be in place in order to not make duplicate loans of the same security?

In particular , I liked the detailed description of evaluating collateral ( both on book, and off book )

Very few books cover this subject are so comprehensively for the non-practitioner. I really felt I had a grip on Securities Lending and Finance by the time I finished this book.

Excellent book of forms/educational material!

Excellent book with all sorts of forms and educational materials. It's exactly as described.

This is *not* a "how-to" manual to learn how to document. This is a book of forms you use *For* documentation. If you can't understand that and you want a book to show you *how* to document, you either need more education/training or need to learn to read. Good book, use it much in our practice.

Good Starting Point for Finding a Business Idea

provides some basic advice on getting a business started and list 101 basic businesses one can start with under $5,000 in beginning capital.

The book's first four chapters cover business insurance and risk management, legalities and taxes, pricing, and financing. There is some good beginning information here, but you will probably need to consult additional sources once you have chosen your business.

Each business idea is listed with icons (identified in the "How to Use this Book" section) and covers the category of the business (service, product, trade, creative or virtual), challenges, skills, complexity and the estimated capital required to start the business. You may find it frustrating to have to keep looking up the icons, but they are simple and you can always bookmark the page with the icon descriptions.

The 101 list begins in chapter 5 with businesses based on "Home Services (Exterior). Examples are Landscape Designer, Deck Construction, Snow Removal, and the like-things that people often hire others to do.

The business descriptions follow a basic format. Here's an example: One of the more creative businesses in this section is "Children's Outdoor Playset Installer". The descriptions begin with the "icons". This one has 7 icons: it's a service business, it's seasonal, there are liabilities, you need technical skills, you need tools, it requires permits and/or licensing, and it costs between $0 and $3,000 in capital. Next is the job description, a brief overview of the work one would do while operating this business. Then, they describe the need for this business. This helps you with business research and can give some ideas as to marketing your business. The challenges section discusses some of the issues you might have difficulty with - like irregular land, permits & applications, the particular liabilities involved if someone gets injured, etc. The "know the territory" section describes some things you may not be aware of (for this business, playground equipment has come a long way from the simple backyard swingset). Next is a "How to get Started Section" which gives basic information on business research and beginning marketing tips. "Up Front Expenses" lists some tools and equipment you'll need. "How Much to Charge" reminds you to charge a fee that includes all your expenses-purchase, assembly, delivery, etc. And the final section is "Legal and Insurance Issues" which point you back to the beginning of the book to read legal, accounting and insurance information.

The businesses described in this book range from housecleaning to auto detailing, party planner to computer buying consultant, billing service to yard sale organizer. Most are easily one-person businesses and many you can start part-time while working at a job.

If you are looking for a book to generate ideas and give you some basic information on these particular businesses, this book will help. It provides good overviews of the 101 businesses they include and there are probably many ideas here you could turn into a business but haven't thought about.

You will probably need to do additional research on any business you choose, but this book is a good starting point.

ARI KIEV, MD, is a psychiatrist who specializes in stress management and performance enhancement. Confoundedly disappointing!

I had expected something of the genre and quality of Market Wizards I & II, Trading for a living, Trade like a Hedge Fund (by James Altucher), Soros on Soros, Reminiscences of a stock operator, Running Money by Andy Kessler etc etc. I had been confoundedly disappointed. The book is flooded of interviews with hedge fund managers anonymous leading you to nowhere but setting goals, visualizing success, overcoming fears and all the stuff you find in any trading psychology book, only that the writing skill of the author is sub-standard. The author had repeated the term "Hedge Fund" highly frequently. However, the content is not related particularly to any hedge fund or hedge fund manager at all. Also, the author had elaborated the term "mastery" throughout the book. I assure you that you will have no idea of how to achieve it unless you employ the author as your personal trading counsellor.

In short, a waste of time, money and the paper to print the book.

'Sceptic' (See March 2nd review below) is right - the author has conjured up a slew of similar 5 star reviews from family, friends and SAC office co-workers. His ego knows no bounds.

If you have his first two books you would be wasting your money to get this one. And it would be nice to expect better of an author on subjects of peak performance than to pad reviews. Sorry, Ari.

get bigger!

After reading all the negative reviews (one from a reviewer that admits he didn't even read the book???) I am a little confused. I just finshed reading Hedge Fund Masters and I really liked it.

The author comments on interviews with 80 hedge fund managers. He talks about the problems holding them back and keeping them from getting bigger, or keeping them from staying profitable. I am amazed that all these managers running huge money have the same problems that I do. Maybe there is hope for me!

There are many ideas in this book that will help traders and managers. Everything from developing a vision, planning a strategy, to the section on fears, emotions, and overcoming obstacles. I think Kiev is more of a coach than a psychologist in this book. He does not say "Ok, I validate your fears, its ok to be a loser", he comes out and tells some of these managers they are being weak and should change their risk levels and profit targets if they want to run big money. It makes sense in the context of the conversations.

With the loss of 5 billion by Aramanth this week, maybe they should have read this book last week. Now just getting bigger is not going to help many managers. Kiev only pushes some of these managers to trade larger on the positions they have extreme confidence in. Confidence levels that they have a track record of in previous trades. After all, if your goal is to be one of the best, you cannot stay in your comfort zone.

STEVEN C. HORII, MD, FACR, FSCAR (author of Chapters 6 and 7) is Professor of Radiology and Clinical Director of the Medical Informatics Group at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

A comprehensive guide to the planning and design of all types of imaging facilities for health care: radiology, MRI, CT scan, PET scan, etc. Clearly written, abundantly illustrated, this book belongs on the reference shelf of any architect working on health care facilities.

Book needs updating

The third edition, copyright 2006, often seems outdated. The examples and references are usually from the 1980's or 1990's. The authors provided a new edition, but I don't see that much effort went into actually updating the material. They don't even introduce object oriented approaches until the last chapter of the book. It's almost like it's an afterthought. They also don't provide much information on RAD or agile methods.

I feel like I bought a circa 1999 book. Disappointing.

Highly Recommended

Price reflects quality. This book is superb for System Analyst and Designers (SAD), both beginner and advanced ones. It is very informative that can be used for both learning and reference purposes. The authors explain everything very clearly using the same case examples (CD Selection case) and exercises for every chapter, so it's very easy to understand and keep track as you move chapter by chapter. I used to screw up in SAD but as I started using this book, I learned much more and much better than before. Thanks to the authors for thier good job and my professor who recommended this book to the class. Highly recommended for anyone interested in SAD.

A Great and Concise Introduction to SDLC

I was introducted to this book as a student of DeVry Institute of Technology. I think the book provides the most concise, yet informative theory of the System Development Life Cycle. Those interested in project management, infrastructure management, etc. would find this book extremely concise and "to-the-point". The book also provides an array of examples, including case projects and questions. I think the only thing missing from this book is an interactive CD or software such as Microsoft Project or Visible Analyst. But we know how Microsoft is about licensing and purchase standards. Anyway, the book is an excellent resource for those interested in information systems management.
