Presents a good way one could get wealthy

I found this book slightly disappointing, having read so many 5 star raving reviews of it. It is a worthwhile read, for sure. To me, the book was more of a "how I succeeded" book than I was expecting. He is very specific in recommending those things that have done well for him. He offers many strategies for making more money doing specific types of (high paying) jobs, investing in real estate, and starting or financing small businesses. There is good advice in there, and I think it is worth reading for that, since Mr. Masterson is very successful, and whose example to follow but someone successful?

The book's pitfalls to me center around specific investing advice. For instance, he recommends not investing much in the stock market because of its volatility, and talks about how much he likes investing in bonds, since if you hold them to completion you know what you are getting. This is true, but does not consider the effects of inflation, which makes that steady income worth less (whereas stock valuations and dividends tend to keep up with inflation). This is a perfect example where you have to realize he is telling you what has worked for him, but may not be the best advice for many (although I agree with him the stock market is currently overvalued). He also seems to contradict himself when he uses the stock market's historical average of 10% returns to claim you need a net worth of 10 times your living expenses to retire (or 12 times if you're more conservative). In one breath he is poo-pooing the stock market as an investment, then using its average returns in his retirement calculations.

I also wish he didn't refer to real estate investing as "flipping" real estate. All the advice he gives about real estate is sound, explaining rents need to be able to cover your mortgage payments, and that today we're in a housing bubble (here in San Diego it's a bubble bath!). Then later he estimates an average ROI of 25% from real estate investing. Again, after inflation is taken into account, I doubt this to be an accurate figure (even taking into account the leverage involved) in today's already-too-pricey environment. Personally, I believe there will be many people losing a lot of money (read: bankruptcy) in real estate over the next five years. I kind of wish Mr. Masterson hadn't used the term "flipping" houses, as I expect it to be a term that in five years will be looked back on with regret and disbelief, just like "day-trading" is today five years after the Nasdaq crash.

I've spent a lot of time here explaining my negative comments. I do think he has presented a good way one could get wealthy - one that has been proven, which is even better. So I would say read intently his wealth building strategies, but double-check the math on your own.

Solid Advice on Building Wealth

Masterson, a self-made millionaire, puts forth a logical approach for building wealth. He believes that a person, who is willing to put in the effort and time, can amass wealth in a period of 7 to 15 years. I think that timing is a bit optimistic, but even if it takes 20 to 25 years, the end result is still the same - financial independence, more freedom and tranquility. Masterson believes one's primary goal is to accumulate enough capital to generate passive income to pay for life's necessities.

This 271-page book is divided into only six detailed chapters. Each one explains one of the six steps to achieving wealth, which are:

1. Face the facts - you won't get rich saving 10% or more in your pension plan or getting measly salary increases.

2. Plan to become wealthy - This is occurs one step at a time and requires planning.

3. Develop specific wealthy habits - work hard, good a what they do, are extraordinary savers, pay themselves first

4. Radically increase your income - to the tune of 25% to 150%

5. Get rich while you sleep - by receiving passive income

6. Retire early - to live the lifestyle you want

Masterson provides specific examples of each of his six steps, as well as personal experiences and appropriate stories. It all seems very real and makes a lot of sense. He mentions that an individual has to make getting rich a priority and be willing to focus his/her energies on building wealth. He also covers the need to have a detailed short-term and long-term written action plan with specific goals.

The author suggests that everyone choose specific lifetime goals; calculate their retirement income needs based upon an analysis of assets and liabilities, and lifestyle requirements. He then recommends that individuals prepare wealth building goals, health goals, personal relationship goals, and personal growth and development goals. These goals should be set for daily, weekly, and monthly timeframes. He is a strong believer in time management and suggests managing time in 15-minute increments so that multiple goals can be worked on during the day.

Masterson believes that real estate can provide significant income and spends time covering how to invest in real estate and what the income should look like. Although he does mention investing in the stock market, he only invests 2% of his money in it. He is reluctant to plunk down a chunk of his money in stocks because they are too risky for him. Obviously, looking back the stock market's devastation during 2000-2002 and the real estate market's appreciation during that time period, his advice seems right on the mark.

He feels the stock market is a very difficult place to make money, and that investors should tread lightly there. For those who invest, he strongly urges them to cut losses at a specific level (25% for him), and use stop loss orders and trailing stops to protect profits. He does not recommend investing in the market unless you have at least $100,000 to invest.

He is a strong believer in investing a sizable portion of income in side businesses and local real estate to build wealth over time. He prefers investing in income generating real estate, buying rental properties, and buying fixed income investments - holding bonds to maturity to avoid any principal losses due to rising interest rates.

Overall, Masterson does a masterful job of explaining the steps necessary to accrue wealth and enjoy life. For those who believe that investing in the stock market is a critical element in the process, as I do, I recommend a newly published book by Paul Merriman titled "Live it Up without Outliving Your Money" which provides a conservative way to build a highly diversified portfolio that has outperformed the market with less risk.

Great Wealth Building Principles, Horrible Investment Advice

Author clearly has a strong understanding about how to build wealth long-term through focused habits and methodology of thinking, but stay away from his "stock investment" advice and his retirement withdrawal strategies - they're very misinformed. Clearly the author has never heard of Modern Portfolio Theory nor does he make any consideration to market volatility, inflation, and it's affects on withdrawal.If one thinks they can withdrawal more than 4% of their initial portfolio adjusted for inflation for the rest of their life, they'll be in a very bad situation 20+ years into retirement. The author misses the boat here big-time - dangerously so.

Advice: Buy the Book for its foundational principles of wealth building and his excellent assessment of real estate investing, but completely ignore Chapter 5's discussion on stock picking and double the amount you will need for retirement. All his advice will be flushed down the toilet if you follow those parts of the book. Instead, substitute those sections with the book, "The Four Pillars of Investing" by William Bernstein. The combination of the two books would certainly lead most logical consumers to significant wealth accumulation.

Great resource.

This book is awesome for many addictions, as well as addresses issues that are correlated to addiction, such as grief or past family trauma. It is ASAM oriented, so you can pick out what dimension you want to address. The verbage is concise and makes you sound real smart ;) It identifies the problem, gives goals, and recommends objectives w/strategies. Great for interns or anyone who can always use a hand developing an all-encompassing tx plan. Get the supplemental homework planner and you are set.

great tool for work.......

I had a co-worker a few years ago that had this book and I borrowed it alot to help me write treatment plans this is a fabulous tool! It gives a step by step means that is clear and simple. I finally purchased my own book when I changed jobs and would recommend it to anyone in the field.

Excellent non-technical text on a very technical subject

This historical and explanatory book covers a difficult topic: gravity, its discovery (a very difficult road to what we consider today an intuitive conclusion), definition and refinement thru the ages. Along the way we get a dose of physics and astronomy, and an appreciation of the work of the true giants of the past. The text itself is non-technical, and David does a very nice job of explaining difficult subjects without resorting to errors of over-simplification often seen in other examples of "pop science". The book can be casualy read in one sitting, although I frequently found myself distracted by inquiries into topics & subjects that I wanted explained in greater or more technical detail. Those with little background but innate curiosity will find the book fascinating; those with some background will find the historical aspect interesting. David Darling is an experienced writer with previous science subjects, and continues to do well with this volume.

Good History of Science Book

This book is mainly a historical description of our concept of gravity, and can be understood by readers lacking any science background. I personally found the last part of the book (the more modern bits) most interesting, and the coverage is definitely not comprehensive, but there are many interesting sections throughout. I would consider this to be an "introductory" book, and it is definitely (as indicated by the title) limited to gravity.

I've read the best of pop science and this is one easiest yet most comprehensive books I've come across. David Darling masterfully uses the history of our understanding of gravity to explain a whole range of interesting ideas from Aristotle's philosophy to non-Euclidean geometry.

Why do so many people lose money in the stock market? It's really simple, they don't read and study books like this one that give such logical and simple advice. The average person simply doesn't spend the time to understand what they are doing and many of those that follow the markets more closely get overly optimistic and allow emotion to take control.

Mr. Muzea writes in a basic and easy to understand style and includes many short anecdotal stories to flavor and explain his reasoning. I found the book to be forthright and entertaining.

His basic premise is that large investing insiders can give huge clues to the over or under valuation of a stock and by following their lead, along with some basic technical analysis one can greatly increase his chances of selling near tops and buying near bottoms. He runs a service and newsletter that gives up to date information and advice, however I didn't feel like this book was at all a selling tool for his service (like I've found in some other investment type books). This book can stand on its own and one quick reading can easily make an investor money and/or save an investor from loss.

The author has developed a method he calls the "Magic T" it's not a hocus pocus for divining what stocks will win and which will lose, but rather a basic decision making device (much like a pro and con sheet that is a bit more advanced). How he applies this to investments is, by its self, well worth the price of the book.

All in all I give a strong recommendation for this book to any investor or trader that is looking to improve their profits as well as to any that are considering entering the market for the first time.

Terrible; there's no "there" there.

I also got sucked in by all the other positive reviews. Here is the key takeaway from the book: buy when insiders are making meaningful open market purchases, and sell when they are making meaningful open market sales. Whether or not that is an insight for you, save your money. I expected much more. His favorite source for insider trxn info? Yahoo Finance. Gee, thanks. The rest of the book is complete fluff: anecdotes from the author's life, a primer on technical analysis (oh please), and his silly "Magic T" decision-making system. If you are curious about "Magic T", I can summarize that for you as well. Suppose you have to make a binary either/or decision: make a list of the five positive expected outcomes for each of the choices, and then rank each of these ten outcomes from 10 (most important) to 1 (least important). Sum the ranks, and the higher sum is your preferred choice. Insightful, huh? My promise to you, dear reader, is the following: If you buy this book, after reading it, you'll be thinking, why didn't I listen to that guy?

Most of the professionals and causal investors are still trying to find a proven mathematical formula or technical system to make money in the financial market. You will be disappointed if you are trying to do the same with any books.

When it comes to investing, I don't think such a formula or system exists. Just look at how Nobel Prize winner and "genius" failed at LTCM. Human nature plays a key role in the financial market, and we are far form coming close to develop a mathematical model in human thinking. Thinking participants keep the rule of the game changing. Therefore, the only certainty is change.

The key objective of this book is to present a systematic approach to improve our probability of success in identifying safe entry and exit points in the financial market. We have to bear in mind that the method only enhances our probability of success, but there is still no certainty.

With the help of Muzea's methodology, I identified an opportunity to short Euro in March 2005, I cashed out a large part of my energy position when oil hit $70 in Sept 2005, and I stayed away from the stock market during brutal correction in Oct 2005. The tax loss buying strategy in Appendix B also helped me to make a quick 7% profit between Oct and Nov of 2005. I think the result speaks for itself.

All I did was to find out if there were divergences between the actions of the Vital Few (insiders) and that of the Trivial Many (masses). Information is always in the divergences.

The Magic T method highlights in Chapter 8 also helped me to make career decisions. The essence of Magic T method is to remove emotional influence when it comes to decision making, be it financial, business or personal. I just wish my father had taught me this method 20 years ago.

I personally have a few emails exchange with George Muzea. He has a genuine interest in helping financial novice like me to become a better investor. I think he is a noble man.

The money I invested in this book has paid off a thousands time over in a matters of months. I have read over 100 books in investment, but this one comes at the top of my list. I actually re-read the whole book every few months to refresh my memory. I want Muzea's wisdom to be ingrained in my mind so that it becomes automatic. I just ordered a spare copy as my old one has worn out a bit. Unfortunately, it does not come with a hardcover edition.

Muzea's wisdom is timeless and an all-time classic book!

James P. McKenna Jr., BS, graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in chemical engineering. He has spent nearly a decade designing air pollution control equipment as well as performing field-testing of stack emissions.

What's on My Mind About Watson

Biographies always have a slant; the subject was a "good" person or a "bad" person. While there are some writers who've painted Mr. Watson, Sr. as a "bad" person, this book is about a "good" person. The writing and editing is well done. It's a good read. If you like Thomas Watson, Sr., this book will probably help you to like him more. If you don't like Thomas Watson, Sr., this book will not change your mind and actually may reinforce your dislike.

I am giving the book three stars because it is a well-written and well-edited work but it's very much a pro-Watson work and it's attempts to refute Mr. Watson's "bad" side are lame.

In case you care, I am not a fan of both Thomas Watsons or IBM.

Information Age Biography

The key contribution of each is the degree to which they cut the cost of information, allowing more and more of us increasing control of the means of information production with social and economic consequences that rip through our world daily. Watson was one of the most important, bridging the world between Edison and the integrated circuit.

Maney reveals a man of insufferable ego who took enormous risks, risks that not even John D. Rockefeller would have contemplated, to reshape the world for a century yet to come. How Watson did this and succeeded are the life skills of today's executives in every industry. A must read.

One of the better business biographies I've encountered

I've generally not been a huge fan of business biographies...they can get very much bogged down in transactional specifics and company arcana, not to mention shoot-from-the-hip hindsight. This Watson biography, though, is very different and exceptionally engrossing, for two reasons: One, because Maney, whose USA Today columns are pretty much always highly entertaining, is a terrific storyteller, and two, because it seems Watson was nuts enough to have stenographers in his boardroom and all kinds of other meetings so as to preserve his words and wisdom for the ages (not something today's Sarbanes-Oxley-bound CEO's are hurrying to do!). Maney took that source material and turned it into what I found to be a very interesting page turner that's a great read for anyone interested in the history of business -- any business, not just IBM.
Maney spends a fair amount of time explaining how Watson had large early-career successes at NCR, got into very deep yogurt with the feds for anti-trust activities, and then bounced back from that taint to create the world's first great technology company. It's also fascinating, given our three year old economic malaise, to see how Watson steered IBM through the Great Depression and powered it forward into the modern era.
A very vivid and worthwhile book.
