Great Resource, but not for me:

This is a great book for someone who is just about to enter the management field or for the first time supervisor of subordinate personnel. I don’t recommend it for the advanced manager/leader as the book does not venture too far from the basics into theory or complex scenarios. I do love the way each chapter progressively builds upon the next. I'm sure to provide the book to a younger colleague as a solid "reference" guide.

About the Author
DIANNE STOBER, PHD, consults, teaches, and conducts research in the areas of coaching and adult learning. She is on the faculty of the Organizational Management/Organizational Development Master's Program at Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. Trained as a clinical psychologist, she maintains an active coaching practice with individuals and organizations, while also consulting on designing and providing executive and managerial development programs. She can be reached at dstober@fielding.edu.

ANTHONY M. GRANT, PHD, is the founder and Director of the world's first university-based Coaching Psychology Unit at the School of Psychology, in the University of Sydney, Australia. His PhD is in coaching psychology and he is a registered psychologist. A Great Resource in the Field of Coaching

Dianne Stober has been an active player in improving the field of executive coaching so I was delighted to see this publication. The handbook is comprehensive in coverage and well-organized. I am glad to see a book that has a strong theoretical base that also offers some easy to understand models and frameworks of coaching. While I enjoyed the entire book, I particularly liked the authors' chapter on a contextual approach to coaching as well as the chapter on positive psychology. I would highly recommend this book.

Notwithstanding the marketeering/hype that the book presents "scientifically proven" information, this "evidence-based" approach is on-target. In one source text the academic community now has a clearly presented body of knowledge from which we can trace how theory and practice can be linked. We also have a first opportunity to offer graduate programs or other disciplines where coaching is taught a volume that will allow an appreciation the breadth of coaching approaches available and the opportunties for engaging in further study as students, teachers, researchers, practitioners or combinations thereof. Within a few hours of reading this book (from cover to cover) I ordered 6 additional copies for our coaching faculty in the Organizational Dynamics Masters Degree program at the University of Pennsylvania.

Where's the evidence?

I eagerly purchased this book, thankful for an analysis of "evidence-based" coaching processes and outcomes. I was disappointed, because the book is mostly an introductory review of counseling *theories*. It's a fine book, but the title is tremendously misleading. It will be most helpful for anyone without a conventional psychology background or experience in a helping profession. If you have such a background, you may be let down by the lack of real empirical evidence. Many fields today throw out the "evidence-based" label, without understanding what is required for empirical validation.

About the Author
Richard S. Quimby is an Associate Professor of physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.  He earned a BS in EE/Physics at Clarkson College of Technology in 1975 and a PhD in Physics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1979. He has been actively involved in research relating to photonics devices such as fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers since the 1980's.  His work has resulted in approximately 35 publications, as well as three invited conference presentations. He also is a contributor to the book FLUORIDE GLASS FIBER OPTICS (Academic Press 1991).

Best intro to photonics for electrical engineers

It has always been difficult to find a book that is a good introduction to photonics, since the existing books in the field either aim to high and get bogged down in mathematics or aim too low and end up being hobbyist books on the subject. The audience for this book is the college undergraduate who is likely a nonphysics major - most likely an engineering student - who is looking for an introduction to the subject. The other audience would be the professional who wants to come up to speed in photonics by learning the fundamentals in a format that is accessible to him/her. You should already be familiar with your freshman physics, specifically mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves, and a dash of modern physics. Also, knowledge of differential and integral calculus is assumed plus ordinary differential equations. Maxwell's equations are discussed, but there are no derivations involved.

The author makes sure that mathematical concepts do not get in the way of the physical concepts. He does this by giving physical arguments that lead to an intuitive understanding wherever possible. However, sufficient mathematical detail is included so that you should get a good understanding of the quantitative nature of the field as well. The combined coverage of photonics and lasers in a single book is unusual. However, it does lend itself to a better understanding of waveguiding and optical communications, which rely on an understanding of both fields.

The thing I like best about the book is the abundance of numerical examples with detailed solutions and electrical analogs used as illustrations that are found throughout. It really helps those of us with electrical engineering backgrounds who feel we really don't get a subject unless we can quantify something. The examples usually lead the way to solving the included exercises, but the one shortcoming of the book is that there are no solutions to either even or odd problems included.

If you are a student, I highly recommend this book even if you are using Saleh's Photonics as a text. This book will give you a clearer understanding for the quantitative issues.

Like Reading a Gripping Novella

I bought this book several years ago for reference and yesterday I really needed it. I needed to understand certain nonlinear effects in optical fibers: pronto! I have a theoretical physicist background, but I'm not an expert in FO. I'm quite comfortable, indeed prefer, the mathematical framework of coupled NLS or Manakov-PMD equations, but it's much easier to navigate the various approximating assumptions in those formalisms when you possess a clear intuitive understanding of the physics.

Chapter 9 contained most of the background I was looking for. Moreover, it was like reading a gripping novella--I simply couldn't put it down. Nearly every sentence was a revelation. At no point did I feel like I had to slog through the explanations. That chapter covers everything from dielectric distortion, SHG, wave-mixing, Kerr effect, and even optical solitons; all in a highly illuminating way (if I can use that expression). Quimby has a superb writing style that manages to maintain a delicate balance between appealing to physical intuition and yet provide just enough math to convince the reader of technical consistency with Maxwell's equations. The plentiful and perspicuous diagrams that complement the text (roughly one per page) are just as valuable as Quimby's writing style. Truly, a great introductory text and reference work.

Some disappointing omissions include such things as phase-conjugate mirrors and superlensing (negative refractive index), but these topics could be added comfortably in a new edition.

A film hit or miss often forms two sides of the same coin, notes veteran entertainment observer Parish (The Hollywood Book of Scandals) in this gleefully readable, well-researched study of hubris in Hollywood. Parish's 15 choice box-office busts since 1963's Cleopatra demonstrate how "the combination of ill-matched personalities and tangled situations can result in chaos during the making of a must-succeed, extremely costly Hollywood feature." Parish's criteria in choosing his stinkers include the toppling of major stars (such as Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1993's frenzied Last Action Hero); wild overspending and lavish promotion that don't translate into a noteworthy product (Paramount's extravagant 1969 Paint Your Wagon); and a shaky idea that would never have taken off if not for the overweening enthusiasm of a big name, e.g., Warren Beatty's protracted albatross, Town and Country (2001). Occasionally, Parish's insider snooping lends some intriguing tidbits, such as the literary history behind the making of Merchant Ivory's 1975 The Wild Party (starring Raquel Welch) and director Elaine May's costly detail obsession as evidenced by the bulldozing of Moroccan sand dunes for the Beatty-Hoffman loser Ishtar (1987). While most of these film disasters have been well documented elsewhere, Parish depicts an industry in harrowing transition.

Hollywood is notorious for big-budget bombs, but Parish points out that of late the amounts of money shoveled into blockbusters have become so excessive as to gin up public interest in fiduciary misadventure for its own sake. Parameters for inclusion among his chosen legends of Tinseltown profligacy are the involvement of stars, moviemakers "becoming so crassly and blatantly intent on turning out a hit picture that nothing else seems to matter," and "the degree of entertainment value in the finished product." Applying these criteria, Parish amassed a roster of turkeys that he discusses with relative restraint, focusing more on offscreen concerns than onscreen missteps. Showgirls, which set the cause of gratuitous onscreen nudity back immeasurably, takes the most sustained shredding. Sadly, the emphasis on huge budgets precludes discussion of many older failures; only Cleopatra, The Chase, and Paint Your Wagon represent pre-1970 fiscal foolishness. Several recent megastinkers don't rate because they've already been extensively pilloried in print. Despite its lack of historical perspective and comprehensiveness, a satisfying flaming of overstuffed cinematic showboats. Mike Tribby

Murdered: Who Killed 14 Films?

Ever wonder why some of those Hollywood extravaganzas touted in advance as "sure-fire hits" turn into abysmal flops? James Robert Parish's new book "Fiasco: A History of Hollywood's Iconic Flops" details why. Parish turns his keen eye and strong writing style on how over-paid, egotistical stars, meddling studio execs, directors whose vision has the opaque clarity of a tennis ball, and just plain "bad-timing" can sink a strongly anticipated film faster than the Titanic went down. In Fiasco, Parish has chosen fourteen Titanics to muse upon. Yes, Cleopatra, The Cotton Club, Ishtar and Battlefield Earth are included, along with some you may have missed, like The Wild Party - a thorough miss by the usually highly regarded Merchant-Ivory duo - and Shanghai Surprise, another Madonna film crucifixion, accompanied in her writhing agony by then-hubby Sean Penn.

Don't misunderstand me; Parish words are written more in sorrow than in anger. He truly loves Hollywood, as his many other books attest. But Parish does not like the film colony's big messes, and he rakes all the partners in these fourteen disasters over the coals for their participation in foisting such abominations off on the public. Good for him! Parish is an excellent writer, and there are juicy tidbits in almost every sentence: lots of behind the scenes drama; warning signs ignored; egos stroked when they should have been squashed. Personally, I've seen all fourteen of these films and I already knew each one was a disaster. Some of them are legendary, so it was hard not to be aware of them. But I never knew the "back-story" on any of the films: exactly what made it mis-fire so badly. Viewing most of these films is like arriving at the scene of a murder; you can see the victim, but have no clue as to who committed the murder and what was the motive. Thanks to Parish's Fiasco, you not only discover the murderers - the slaughter of all of these films was assisted by more than one person, rest assured - you also understand their motives, which were misguided in all cases.

Another excellent book by James Robert Parish. Fun to read; informative; well-written; and actually a bit sad, given that all the mistakes could have been so easily avoided.

Why Films Flopped

Parish does a nice job reviewing and discussing the reasons behind some of Hollywood's big budget flops and disasters. By limiting the scope to movies during the past few decades, only, kicking off with the infamous Cleopatra (the Liz and Dick version), Parish bypasses ill-begotten films from the classic studio days when budgets were less than some of today's music videos.

Although some of the films in the book were not outright disasters based on total revenue returns including worldwide grosses and DVDs, they all failed to live up to expectations, excluding the films for which there were never expectations, e.g., Madonna/Penn's Shanghai Gesture. Packaging the Kevin Costner misfires - Waterworld and The Postman - is a nice touch, and I'm sure Parish could have included a few more of Warren Beatty's big budget disappointments, but the behind the scenes goings on for Ishtar and Town and Country are more than sufficient to illustrate the downside of Beatty's total control complex. Parish wisely leaves out such infamous films as Heaven's Gate that are written about in detail elsewhere.

Although many of the stories included in the book should be familiar to most film enthusiasts, the overall package should provide more than a few chuckles over the incompetency and infighting associated with the film industry. As William Goldman famously observed about the movies, no one knows anything and this book certainly proves it.

"Fiasco"

James Robert Parish's latest work is unfinished: the absences of such grand Hollywood follies as the original "Dr. Dolittle," "Howard the Duck," "Hudson Hawk," and The John Frankenheimer version of "The Island of Dr. Moreau" (a trial to make and a trial to sit through) are deeply felt. "Heaven's Gate" was excluded because Bach's "Final Cut" had already gone over it, but is a study of follywood's worst really complete without it? The torturous shoot of "Waterworld" is only briefly discussed to fit it together with "The Postman;" I felt pretty cheated. Yet the book is engagingly written, and what's there is rather dishy. Kevin Costner's laid-back demeanor belies his planet-moving ego; when "Team America" was slaughtering celebrities left and right, they should have included him. Watching Robert Evan's dream project "The Cotton Club" falling in on itself before his eyes can win your empathy, while the story behind "Last Action Hero" reads like a script for a farce ( the movie was thought to be able to give "Jurassic Park" stiff box office competition, yet until they were topped by "Cutthroat Island" and "Titanic," respectively, the industry's biggest bomb and biggest moneymaker were released within a week of one other). Only "cleopatra's" budget is adjusted for inflation, breaking out to the equivilant of 260 million of today's dollars, which is a shame because it could help give perspective of how badly the others fared. But what's there is priceless. The only complaint I could make is that there isn't enough of it. Unlike many of the films here (or any of them, really) this book deserves a sequel.

About the Author
Paul Calter is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Vermont Technical College and Visiting Scholar at Dartmouth College. A graduate of The Cooper Union, New York, he received his M.S. from Columbia University and a MFA from Norwich University. Professor Calter has taught technical mathematics for over twenty-five years. He is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two  Year Colleges, the Mathematical Association of America, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the College Art Association, and the Author's Guild.

Calter is involved in the Mathematics Across the Curriculum movement, and has developed and taught a course called Geometry in Art and Architecture at Dartmouth College under an NSF grant.

Professor Calter is the author of several other mathematics textbooks, among which are the Schaum's Outline of Technical Mathematics, Problem Solving with Computers, Practical Math Handbook for the Building Trades, Practical Math for Electricity and Electronics, Mathematics for Computer Technology, Introductory Algebra and Trigonometry, Technical Calculus, and Squaring the Circle: Geometry in Art and Architecture.

Michael Calter is Associate Professor at Wesleyan University. He received his B.S. from the University of Vermont. After receiving his Ph.D. from Harvard University, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California at Irvine. Michael has been working on his father's mathematics texts since 1983, when he completed a set of programs to accompany Technical Mathematics with Calculus. Since that time, he has become progressively more involved with his father's writing endeavors, culminating with becoming co-author on the second edition of Technical Calculus and the fourth edition of Technical Mathematics with Calculus. Michael also enjoys the applications of mathematical techniques to chemical and physical problems as part of his academic research. Michael is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Chemical Society.

Michael and Paul enjoy hiking and camping trips together. These have included an expedition up Mt. Washington in January, a hike across Vermont, a walk across England on Hadrian's Wall, and many sketching trips into the mountains.

It's OK

Not my favorite book on substance abuse. Kind of bland, and alot of the information is on NIDA and NIAAA websites (more current information there too!). Bought the book for class. It has some pretty good case material, but nothing to write home about. It's not terrible, but it isn't really that great either.

One of the best overviews on Substance Abuse that I have read

This is a straightforward book. The authors cover a lot of ground clearly and easily. This is not a dry book, rather it is engaging enough that it would qualify as an interesting read for both aspiring practitioners as well as someone not involved in, or familiar with, the Substance Abuse treatment field.

This book is quite complete; it covers a complex subject well and allows the reader to get a gestaltic understanding yet also provides for some depth of clinical/granular information.

The book is probably worth the price simply for the references at the back of each chapter (a who's who of contributors to the science of abuse and dependence)..this is well grounded information presented concisely by geniune experts so the reader can come up the learning curve quickly.

Satisfied Customer in Clinical Substance Abuse Counseling

Nicholas Lessa (LCSW) and Walter Scanlon, Ph.D. have joined forces to put together an extremely pragmatic and useful reference guide to substance use disorders in clinical practice. Important topics include: 1) understanding mood-altering substances, 2) assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning, 3) determining the level of care needed, 4) coexisting mental disorders, and 5) the basics of recovery. My favorite chapter was the one on spirituality as an important factor in recovery. Written in clear understandable language with a personal yet objective tone, Lessa & Scanlon cover the "how to" of providing recovery options, and the elements of an effective counseling environment in real life situations. Levels of Care (LOC) are covered in detail, although how to determine the level of care is not always clear. Theories such as Prochaska & DiClemente's Stages of Change Model, and Gorski's Model of Addiction, as well as terms used in diagnosis from the DSM-IV, and a description of personality disorders are covered, including excellent case studies.
