VALUABLE, VALID AND VIVID SNAPSHOT OF THE HR PROFESSION!

To create this collection the editors contacted thought leaders and asked them "What is the future of HR?" They responded with the essays that make up this work. Its 45 brief chapters, contributed by 64 HR gurus, cover a broad spectrum of issues confronting the field. The chapters were clustered into nine parts, with the springboard clause of "In the future, an effective HR professional must..." These nine parts focus on outcomes and results-not actions or activities. This non-tradition (i.e., not based on specialized functions) organization of the book's content captures a dynamic, value-generating spirit. The authors hope they have provided a "road map for the profession," spotlighting how HR practitioners can constantly reinvent themselves to continue being of value people, organizations, and societies.

The books' core value is that it encompasses so many key and leading-edge topics written by so many people who are at the forefront of forging the field's future. But each chapter has its own stand alone merit; quite a few have considerable originality and 'push the envelop.' For example, in Chapter 14, "Changing Mental Models: HR's Most Important Task," Jeffrey Pfeffer argues that aside from being keepers and analysts of organization culture, HR needs to be concerned with the mental models and mindsets of the people of the company, particularly its leaders. Page-forward to chapter 30; there, Jac Fitz-Enz has a slightly different take; he concludes that to be a strategic business partner, HR leaders must become more culture managers than anything else-"there is no better place to start than with the organization's culture." Such thought-provoking views are typical of this book and distinguish it as lively, varied and ambitious collection of substantive thinking. Clearly, this is not a fast-read; given its agenda and scope-that's a virtue.

As an HR consultant and practitioner (HRconsultant.com, Partner, Stern & Associates), as well as a reviewer, I find this book to be a valuable, valid, and vivid snapshot of where the HR field is, where it's likely to be heading, and the many challenges it's confronting. No question about it, there's a lot of rewarding reading in this book.

The Future of Human Resource Management by Ulrich et al.

The authors describe human resource management as both an art and

a science. It is an art because we are required to motivate,

build alliances, assume new roles, adopt to the corporate culture

and collaborate on mutually beneficial ventures.

Human Resource management issues range from functional experience

to talent management in an organization. An HR advisor is

knowledgable on core competencies . Generally, such a team member

is trusted by superiors to provide the talent necessary to

accomplish corporate goals. Often, it is necessary to adapt the

corporate culture to take full advantage of business conditions.

Employees must focus on building markets of customers locally

and globally. This task requires both new skills and a considerable technical analysis. The HR management process

is a science in that there are reams of statistical data to

sort and interpret for senior management, customers and governmental units at every level.

This work is a good primer for the Human Resource function in

an organization both large and small.

Business Imperative/Business Critical

If you are interested in the critical issues facing Human Resources today and business leadership in general, this text is a must. This book is for the HR practitioner and corporate leaders. The strategic business partner role is the future of Human Resources as the tactical and transactional basics of HR are either being exported outside of HR departments or outsourced. The HR role today is business focused, business critical and business imperative. All the critical isses facing HR are discussed in this anthology - from the strategic national issues, regional issues and globalization. I highly recommend. I also recommend the first addition of this series "Tomorrow's HR Management: 48 Thought Leaders Call For Change." Thanks Amazon for bringing both books to my attention.

JIAN LI, PhD, is Professor and Director of the Spectral Analysis Laboratory of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Florida. She has coedited one book, coauthored one book and two book chapters, and published approximately 250 refereed technical conference contributions and journal papers, many of which are on topics related to array signal processing.

PETRE STOICA, PhD, is Professor of System Modeling in the Department of Systems and Control at Uppsala University, Sweden. JODY BLAZEK, CPA, is a partner in Blazek & Vetterling LLP, a Houston accounting firm focused on financial services for tax-exempt organizations and the individuals who create, fund, and work for them. She is immediate past chair of the AIPCA Tax-Exempt Resource Panel and heads the Form 990-PF Redesign Task Force. She serves on the editorial board of the Exempt Organization Tax Review and the Tax Advisor. She is a founding director of Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts and the Houston Artist Fund. Blazek's concentration on nonprofits began at KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. She gained industry experience as chief financial officer of the Menil Foundation before forming the firm she now serves. Excellent source of tips and sound advice

I bought Jody Blazek's "IRS Form 1023 Tax Preparation Guide" to help me through the maze of filling out the recently-revised applicaiton form for obtaining 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. It was a very helpful book. I kept it by my side when filling out the form, and emulated the examples it gave.

When I was nearing completion, I considered having my applicaiton reviewed by a CPA in a big city near hear, just to make sure there was nothing in my final draft that might cause rejection or delay. In the final analysis, I decided just to submit what I had done with the help of Jody's book -- and save the $500 to $1,000 that the CPA firm in Buffalo would have charged.

I submitted our application for the VIA Collaborative Arts Corporation (DBA VIA Dance Collaborative) on September 1, 2005. The IRS issued our approval letter -- our "Letter of Determination" on September 30. Need I say more?

Disappointed

I had read all the IRS publications and had filled out form 1023 as best I could before I purchased the book. I had hoped to find information on the relative importance of the questions, some useful tips, short cuts, etc. It was a waste of my money. I did not learn anything that was not made perfecetly clear in the IRS pubs and on the Instructions for form 1023 (but my application did not require any of the Schedules).

Very disappointed. Waste of money.

IRS Form 2012 Tax Preparation Guide is even less helpful preparing Form 1023 as the instructions contained in the IRS publication accompanying Form 1023.

To begin with, it is poorly written, using much of the ambiguous and convoluted wording of the ever enigmatic IRS. You would need to be a Supreme Court Justice to understand its meaning, and then you would have difficulty. This book is not written for the average educated reader.

Secondly, Jody Blazek keeps referring you to her other book that costs $250 to obtain more detail about what she is writing about. That annoyed me the most, the thought of paying $60 for an advertisement!

Thirdly, she doesn't go into enough detail on many of the line items. Remember, we are not tax attorneys; that's why we are buying this book and shelling out 60 shekels.

Do not expect to be able to fill out Form 1023 after reading this book. This book convinced me that I need a better reference.

The best got better

I have to begin with a gripe. The first four reviews are implausibly quick, given the length of this book, and are all five-star. Three are from people who reviewed only one product, one is completely devioid of content. The fifth reviewer has reviewed one other product, a razor. I understand the temptation to stuff the ballot-box early by having friends review, but I think you should find real reviewers and insist on some content.

There are several great valuation books out there. Damodaran on Valuation concentrates on security valuation and is the most academic. Business Valuation is the best for small, private companies. Business Valuation on Wall Street tells you how Wall Street approaches the question. Theory of Valuation is the best on theory. Corporate Finance has the best treatment of valuation among corporate finance texts.

Earlier editions of this book were the clear leaders in big and complex public company valuation. There is extensive and detailed instruction for a big team analyzing for a big project, whether it is capital budgeting, capital structure, merger, acquisition, restructuring, bankruptcy or any other valuation topic. It is comprehensive and clear. If you work on this kind of project, you need this book. If you don't work on this kind of project, it can still give you a tremendous amount of insight into the factors that contribute to shareholder value.

The most important improvement in the fifth edition is to go beyond the developed-markets/US-style financial statement presentation to cover emerging market companies in detail. I can't say whether the section is good as I have zero experience in that area, but it sounds right and I trust the authors. The treatment of capital structure and investor relations is considerably improved based on events of the last three years. They also stuck in some useless fluff about the necessity to maximize shareholder value and behavioral finance (I don't mean those aren't interesting areas, just that there's no depth to the presentation in this book, and clearly no real interest by the authors).

One minor gripe is the examples are usually placed around the beginning of 2008, for a book published in 2010. That's a big difference considering what happened in 2008 and 2009. I understand why you don't want to rework every example of a book this big, but some of the projections are downright comical to someone knowing what actually happened. I suppose that might help readers develop humility, at the end of the day, valuation is a matter of opinion based on highly uncertain information about totally unknowable future events. The weight and slick production values of tihs book might cause some to forget that.

About the Author

KE LIU, PhD, MBA, is the Principal Scientist and Project Leader of the Energy and Propulsion Technologies Division of GE Global Research Center, working on different technologies related to gasification, IGCC, syngas, and fuel conversion. Currently, he leads a team of engineers to develop the dry feeding technology for next-generation GE gasifier for high-moisture, low-rank coal and biomass gasification. Dr. Liu started his career at Exxon-Mobil and then UTC Fuel Cells, working on various fuel and H2 production technologies. He is not only a leading expert on energy, fuels, and gasification, but also an industrial leader who led many large R&D projects funded by DOE and large U.S. energy corporations such as GE, Shell-UTC, and Exxon-Mobil. A recipient of numerous awards, including the 2006 National Emerald Honors Special Recognition Award, Dr. Liu has served as a board member and program chair of International Pittsburgh Coal Conference, a board member of the Energy Center of CalTech (PEER), and the associate editor of the Energy and Fuels Journal.

CHUNSHAN SONG, PhD, is a Professor of Fuel Science and Chemical Engineering and the Director of the EMS Energy Institute at Pennsylvania State University. A recipient of numerous awards, he has been extensively published, and his research on clean fuels and catalysis has been funded by government and industry. Also, Dr. Song has served as chair for the ACS Division of Petroleum Chemistry; chair for ACS Fuel Chemistry Division; and advisory board chair and program chair for International Pittsburgh Coal Conference.

VELU SUBRAMANI, PhD, is a Research Scientist working for the BP Refining and Logistics Technology team. He has over fifteen years of research experience in heterogeneous catalysis for fine chemicals synthesis, energy production, and environmental protection. He is the recipient of research fellowships from Switzerland and the Science and Technology Agency (STA) of Japan. Dr. Subramani is the author of over fifty peer-reviewed articles in international journals and the author or co-author of several patents. He served as the program chair for the ACS Division of Fuel Chemistry.

Larry W. Mays is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University and former chair of the department.  He was formerly Director of the Center for Research in Water Resources at The University of Texas at Austin, where he also held an Engineering Foundation Endowed Professorship. A registered professional engineer in seven states and a registered professional hydrologist, he has served as a consultant to many organizations. Professor Mays is author of Optimal Control for Hydrosystems (Marcel-Dekkar, Inc.), co-author of Applied Hydrology (McGraw-Hill) and Hydrosystems Engineering and Management (McGraw-Hill), and editor-in-chief of the Water Resources Handbook (McGraw-Hill), Hydraulic Design Handbook (McGraw-Hill), and the Water Distribution Systems Handbook (McGraw-Hill). He was also editor-in-chief of Reliability Analysis of Water Distribution Systems (ASCE) and co-editor of Computer Modeling of Free Surface and Pressurized Flows (Kluwer Academic Publishers).  Among his honors include a distinguished alumnus award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1999.

Water Resources at your finger tips!

Larry W. Mays has written an outstanding text that provide students with a complete picture of water resources engineering by integrating the fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, and contaminant transport processes. The material in the text is presented from first principles, is rigorous, is relevant to the practice of water resources engineering, and is reinforced by detailed presetations of design applications. A text worth having next to vintage books on this subject in W-R engineers' library.

This book is loaded with good information, but we found errors in key hydraulic formulas, which quickly led me not to trust anything out of the book. The sad part is, this was a required text for an engineering class. Maybe the new edition has remedied the problems, but I wouldn't recommend the edition I bought.

One of my coworkers had this book, I kept using it as a reference so I eventually bought my own copy. It is an outstanding textbook and an important reference book to have on hand. I highly recommned it. It is far better than the "Hydraulic Engineering" textbook I had in college.
