Best Basic Project Management Book for Product Development

I've read a number of project management books over the years, and very few of them fit at all in a product development environment. This book fits and matches product development very well. In fact, in my opinion, it is the best basic project management book on the market currently for application in product development. This shouldn't be a surprise though since Mickey Rosenau understands project management practice in the field of product development. Beware of the other authors who claim that they understand product development and then apply a traditional approach to project management. Project management in product development is different, and a traditional approach to project management doesn't work in product development. Stay away from the traditional management approach and get this book instead.

I had known nothing about the project management before reading this book and it really helps me for orientation in the field.

It is maybe a little bit chippy and from enterprise point of view (which I am not used to), but it helped me to understand the basics.

About the Author

Don A. Dillman, PhD, is Regents Professor and Thomas S. Foley Distinguished Professor of Government and Public Policy and is also on the faculty of the Social and Economic Sciences Research Center and the Department of Sociology at Washington State University. He received the Roger Herriot Award for Innovation in Federal Statistics from the American Statistical Association and the Washington Statistical Society in 2000 and the American Association for Public Opinion Research Award in 2004 for exceptionally distinguished service to the profession.

Jolene D. Smyth, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Survey Research and Methodology Program and the Department of Sociology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Her primary research interests include survey measurement and nonresponse. She has published several articles relevant to these topics in recent years and continues to explore them in her current research.

Leah Melani Christian, PhD, is a Research Associate at the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press. Her primary research interests include mixed-mode surveys, questionnaire design, and the impact of technology on survey research.

Dissertation lifesaver!!!

I used Dillman's method to create a mail based survey for my doctoral dissertation. My return rate was 67% by the end of the study. This book does a fantastic job of explaining each step of the process, how to craft the tools, and why certain elements are important. The text is easy to read, the directions are clearly explained with an example for each step, and process is logically presented. I have several books about survey creation which I used in my study, but this was, by far, the most helpful. I credit Dillman's methodology for my fantastic return rate. I would highly recommend this text for anyone relying on surveys to gather information.

Definitive Guide to Self-Administered Surveys

The third edition of Internet, Mail, and Mixed-Mode Surveys is the definitive guide to designing and implementing self-administered surveys. Anyone interested in conducting survey research would benefit from owning this book.

The book covers phone, mail, and web surveys and includes evidence-based instructions on how to maximize response rates. The authors also discuss common problems that one encounters when designing and implementing surveys and how to overcome them. Each section contains high-quality, black and white examples of survey pages and letters to respondents that can be used as models for your own work.

I call this the definitive guide, because in addition to providing instructions on how to design and implement surveys, it contains chapters devoted to better understanding the history and current practice of survey research in the United States. Chapter one provides a historical overview of survey methodology and discusses some of the challenges currently facing survey researchers. The only thing missing from this section was a table or figure showing how the response rates for different types of self-administered surveys have changed over time. I think this would have helped drive home the authors' point about the shift in people's willingness to participate in survey research. Chapter 11 contains information about the policies and procedures for conducting survey research in different institutions (i.e., the federal government, academia, and private companies) and how they can affect timelines, budgets, and the quality of the data collected. The extensive reference section serves as an excellent resource for those interested in learning more about the experimental research behind the recommendations in this book.

I used this book extensively when designing and implementing a web-based survey. The chapters on constructing survey questions and designing web surveys were very informative and easy to digest. I feel that the book was partially responsible for my survey's high response rate.

Philippe Jorion is Professor of Finance at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California at Irvine. He holds an MBA and a PhD from the University of Chicago and a degree in engineering from the University of Brussels. Dr. Jorion has authored more than eighty publications--directed towards academics and practitioners--on the topic of risk management and international finance. Geoscience Laboratory has been revised for 2004. Many college students these days enter college with no earth science background, then find they are required to take a science lab course. Geoscience Laboratory addresses this deficiency by using many 'real world' examples and geology in the news as example of geological principles. Geoscience Laboratory encourages students to answer questions based on the materials they have studied, not merely to look up answers in the book. Exercises in this book have been extensively tested in a real university setting before publication. The book attempts to serve two audiences--students for whom a basic geology course is their only college level lab science, as well as potential majors taking their first college class, and, from a teaching assistant's point of view, does a good job as the basis for the lab classwork.

Selected as workbook for UC Santa Cruz class

For the future presentations of the University of California Extension Sarbanes-Oxley class, we selected this volume and CDROM as the workbook. The earlier textbook was too high-level and theoretical. The head of the Finance and Accounting department was quick to approve the change. The participants in the class include both accounting and IT professionals; they will appreciate the very practical nature of this volume.

Toolkit That More Than Pays for Itself

One of the unintended consequences of subscribing to a Sarbanes-Oxley Listserv is seeing how many auditors, and companies, are struggling with Section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. There has been a lot of uncertainty for auditors, and companies, as what is required and how to go about setting up an effective audit plan and making compliance repeatable, sustainable reality. I have seen more calls of help for toolsets in this Listserv than I wish there were, but that has been the reality. However, there is now an outstanding resource to help external, internal auditors, and companies get their acts together by streamlining the 404 compliance process.

Michael Ramos, author of the excellent "How to Comply with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404: Assessing the Effectiveness of Internal Control", has now written "The Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 Implementation Toolkit: Practice Aids for Managers and Auditors" (357 pages, John Wiley and Sons, 2005, ISBN 0471712256. This is not a book to sit down and read. This is a book that, from cover to cover, provides worksheets, sample documents, and decision criteria for their use. It is a book that comes with a CD-ROM of the entire documentation contents that will more than pay for itself from the first day you have it in your hands.

It is hard to look at a book like this and say "I like or do not like what the author has to say", or that "I really like the author's writing style". What you need to look at in deciding whether or not to purchase this book, is a series of questions.

Do you have to conduct Section 404 audits as part of an external audit or as part of a control self-assessment? Do you need ready to go and completely customizable templates to help you in this process? Do you want to use tools developed by an experienced Certified Public Accountant, instead of having to sit down and spend days on end developing your own toolsets and work paper templates? How much non-billable time are you willing to spend developing these tools? Do you want an easy to understand methodology that can easily be taught and passed on to other employees as part of a knowledge transfer and enablement program?

If you are like me, these questions will give you the easy answer of "Yes!". All of the documents provided on the CD ROM are in word format, and the disk also contains a Microsoft Word document viewer and a copy of Open Office. Each form comes with a purpose statement to understand its use, as well as instructions on how to use them. Ramos starts with the general work program and takes the process all the way to the end with management reports. There is also a sample general audit program.

Who Should Read This Book

The purchase of this book should be a no-brainer for internal and external auditors, managers, and consultants doing SarBox work. I add this latter group because there are too many consultants out there who are telling clients things that are not quite accurate. This book should help them provide better services.

What it is about, is left for you to figure out.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first undergraduate book on communication systems to include introductory treatments of time-frequency analysis and cryptography. Three years ago when I took my first communications course, I have used this book as a reference. "Modern digital and analog communication systems", second edition by P. B. Lathi, was the adapted textbook by my professor. I had four books to study the subject from; Lathi, Haykin, Zimer and Tranter, and Leon W. Couch II. Because Haykin was the most popular, I though that it was the one that I should concentrate on. Upon completion of reading each chapter, I had more questions than answers, so I had each time to turn to Lathi and Zimer, which I found much more fluid and accessible. Couch's "Digital and analog communication systems" is simply a piece of garbage. After reading Lathi's "Modern digital and analog communication systems", for analog communications course, B. Sklar for digital communications course, I gained an adequate maturity on the subject such that enabled me to read Proakis's "Digital communications", third edition, which I found to be the most serious and involved book on the subject. I still think that Haykin's "Communication systems", is very much similar to Kant's "Critique of pure reason", since you have to read the same thing over and over again until you reach the point where you start wondering "have I understood it, or is it the repetition that made me memorize the subject?!". Imagine Bertrand Russell or Kurt Godel trying to explain multiplication and division to the first grade students, the situation is analogues, Haykin, world leading communication researcher trying to explain introductory analog communication principles and digital pass band transmission to senior students, he must admit that it isn't easy to imitate R. Hamming's insightful writing style. Chapter 2 starts very well, until section 5, where the author is pointlessly trying to mention uncertainty principle, and yet, he does not. Maybe in next edition, he will include a section on Wigner distributions and somehow manage to mention tensor product. In 2.11 concept of pre-envelope is discussed in very dry manner, maybe in the next edition it will be mentioned that the real and imaginary parts of an analytic function are harmonics and in the footnote complete theory of harmonic analysis will be summarized in 5 lines. Chapter 4, Random Processes doesn't even mention optimal filtering, the subject that arises naturally in the context of signal recovery. In next edition it is expected that chaotic dynamics of the sea clutter will be compressed in a single section. Don't waste your time on chapter 5, read Lathi's (1998) chapters 12 and 13 on the same subject. Section 6.13 unfortunately doesn't include filter banks, pyramid algorithms, quadrature mirror filters and thorough five-line discussion of multi-resolution analysis. Section 7.9 does not include generalization of LMS algorithm to error back propagation, and blind deconvolution is not even mentioned. Section 8.4 on geometric interpretation of signals says nothing about Banach spaces, nor Frames. It's true that section 8.6 includes very nice discussion of coherent detection of signals in noise, but for partially coherent, deferentially coherent and double deferentially coherent communications with waveforms the reader is advised to refer to "Digital communication techniques, signal design and detection", by M. K. Simon and S. M. Hinedi, 1995. Chapter 9 on spread spectrum modulation says no more than 16 lines about synchronization, the subject that is given four pages in B. Sklar (1988). Delay locked loops does not even ring a bell. Don't you agree that synchronization is one of the main issues in the spread spectrum systems? Add to that, that examples of pseudo-random codes given in this book do not exceed periods of 256 bit length, that is less than one microsecond of randomness, while practically attainable periods are of one century duration. Anyway, for a better one chapter treatment of spread spectrum systems refer to Proakis. Section 10.13 "Compression of information" has very nice comprehensive 9 lines on vector quantization. Maybe in next edition "Information-theoretic models" and "Radial basis function networks", will be included as a section in this chapter. Don't waste your time on chapter11 "Error control codes", read B. Sklar's (1988) chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 12, what it is about is left for you to figure out. Let me conclude by saying that "Communication systems" is an undergraduate text written with graduate language. I found Haykin's "Neural networks, a comprehensive foundation", in order of magnitude superior to any other book on the subject. Meanwhile I am using his "Adaptive filter theory" to gain enough knowledge about the subject for my current project on system identification with LMS implemented with FPGA. If you are a beginner in communication systems subject, use your time efficiently by reading Lathi and Zimer on introductory subjects. If you like to go on further, than get B. Sklar, and then Proakis. Don't get deceived by brain damaged readers who claim that it is the best book as an introduction, maybe they say so, because they have failed in the course over and over again till they decided to memorize all formulas and definitions which they found organized in Haykin's. Also note that tons of universities started to adapt Lathi's instead of Haykin's.

Definitely not the best

First, you really need to have prior exposure to the subject to thoroughly understand some of the topics involved. Some equations are introduced 'ad hoc' and are not explained, even intuitively. If you want to know the 'why' and 'how', look to other books such as Lathi's and Proakis's, which are much better. I found their books to be more systematic, more organized, and simply more logical. Our professors at my university do not seem to like this book, and the students now know why. We switched to Communication Systems Engineering by Proakis, which is more mathematically sound and much clearer. However, you can gain some useful insights from Haykin's book, so I give it two stars instead of one because everything in Haykin's book cannot necessarily be found elsewhere, so it is of use at times.

Not bad at all as a reference...

In the last lines of 'Preface', Haykin says: "It is expected that the reader has a knowledge of electronics, circuit theory, and probability theory". In fact he forgot to mention signals & systems, and analog & digital communications, since the book addresses professors, definitely not students. The prose comprises sophisticated ambiguous phrases, as if they were set that way on purpose, although his other books are written in clear, interesting, and intuitive style, like 'Neural Networks', 'Adaptive Filter Theory'. Probably more famous for bibliography than for the material itself, so, one can find there titles such as: 'The Analytical Theory of Heat', J.B.J. Fourier (1878).'Theory of Motion of the Heavenly Bodies', C.F. Gauss (1809). VA Kotelnikov's Theory of Optimum Noise Immunity (1947). 'Adaptive Filter Theory', Haykin (1991). 'Digital Signal Processing', Oppenheim & Schafer, etc , as if the undergraduate student, who barely distinguishes between coherent & noncoherent detection, is expected to go through such subjects. A lot of unrelated topics have been added just to make the book look thicker, like Wavelet Transform, Short Time Fourier Transform & FFT and others, each of which one wouldn't understand from it, unless he/she previously had been exposed to. The bottom line here is that I find this book completely unreadable as a text, but not bad at all as a reference for the topics that one might have had forgotten.

Teresa Fernandes is a graphic designer and the principal of TFD Studio in Connecticut. She is the coauthor (with Steven Heller) of The Business of Illustration.

Missed the mark

This might be a good book for someone who don't have any design experience. I was looking for direction in how to begin as a novice with some training rather than starting from scratch. This book is for those who would say, "Hmm should I get into graphic design? Where do I start I no absoultely nothing?". The description just wasn't very helpful to me.

PERFECT for someone interested in the Graphic Design field.

I've read through (and looked through) this book quite a few times, and each time I find something new. It has pretty much every sub-field in GD to sample the work of a professional in that career. The pages are eye-catching as well as eay-to-read. If you're interested in purchasing a book to help you further explore GD as a career, or if you are trying to decide what kind of sub-field you're looking for, this is the book for you!

Great book depending upon your interest

I do agree with the previous reviewer that this book does not have practical advice in terms of performing graphic design related duties. There are plenty of books out there that you can acquire that will outline the process of designing, design elements etc... such as "The Elements of Graphic Design" by Alex. W. White.

However, this book as its sub-title clearly states is "A Guide to Careers in Design", and in that regards performs very well in outlining the myriad of different fields and industries that Graphic Designers are involved in. Also, they interview many key figures involved in these fields and pick their brain regarding the state of design, dynamics of their respective industry and also how one should best approach beginning a career as a designer.

I found the book invaluable in that it was like having wise uncles in dozens of different design industries and having a talk with you about, "How things really work." Somewhat light reading but still quite informative.
