About the Author
ZENO W. WICKS, Jr., PhD, has more than fifty years of experience in the coatings field, including twenty-eight years with Inmont Corporation and eleven years as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Polymers and Coatings at North Dakota State University. Currently working as a consultant, Dr. Wicks is the recipient of the Mattiello Memorial Lectureship, the Roy W. Tess Award, and four Roon Awards.

FRANK N. JONES, PhD, is a Research Professor at the Coatings Research Institute of Eastern Michigan University, as well as the Principal of Coatings Consulting Services, LLC. He is the recipient of the Mattiello Memorial Lectureship and three Roon Awards.

S. PETER PAPPAS, PhD, is currently a consultant who teaches frequent technical short courses. Dr. Pappas has been a corporate scientist at Kodak Polychrome Graphics, scientific fellow at Loctite, and a professor in the Department of Polymers and Coatings at North Dakota State University. He is the recipient of five Roon Awards.

DOUGLAS A. WICKS, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Terrible book, unfortunately, because the potential was there

This book was a huge disappointment.

The Sentence structure is poor. Some things are repeated three times in the same paragraph. It's almost like the author was too lazy to proof-read his own text. Proof reading by a professional editor would take this text a long way. It is unfortunate that this book being in the 3rd edition still has issues with proper writing.

Undefined terms abound. Examples that are not supported by references everywhere. Technical jargon that is not explained. Confusing diagrams without appropriate explanations. Two different subjects jumbled together into the same paragraph for no apparent reason. No explanations or points of reference for physical units.

On and on and on, very disappointed. Stay away

All You Want to Know About High Polymers and Coatings

Dear Readers
I knew Zeno Wicks Jr. personally. He taught me several hundred hours of Polymers and Coatings at N.D.S.U. in Fargo, N.D.
At that time I had forgotten all of my Chemistry and I knew nothing about a Polymer. He was really a great person to know and he was extremely approachable if you had a problem in either R & D, Q.C., or in production. Also he had a keen sense of marketing as well. He was also a great teacher and a good writer.

He was also very skilled at getting a debate going on serious issues in these same fields mentioned above. He would invite the students to the evening brainstorming sessions after regular classes in the day. It could get pretty hot in those debates but witnessing these question and answer sessions allowed me to see just how far industry and the people in industry can go to turn out new products and how talented they are in creating new and "smarter" molecules and compounds. All- in- all quite inspirational.

Dr. Wicks impressed on me that economies ( especially America of course) get going by people creating new products. Not by just being satisfied with the old ones. It was really this "American Way" ( although he didn't call it that, I do ) philosophy that use to excite me. It was like mixing Political Science with Natural Science and I always enjoyed that kind of analysis.

Zeno as he asked us to call him had not only the educational prerequisites but he had had decades of experience in industry to be able to illuminate his arguments for the "whys?" and "hows?" of trying harder to get better results. He wasn't just a "book" guy. There were the "horror stories" of what could go wrong...these unfortunately didn't get into the book....you had to be there to get the real rundown on what can happen if things didn't go right. But then ther were the success stories which were also worth their weight in gold....or other precious commoditiies.

A Good Book

I'm surprised on the low ratings of this book, because it is a very good book. The book does a good job in teaching Software Engineering, is easy to follow and to the point, has very little fluff, and stays on topic throughout each chapter.

Forced to buy it but then barely used it - Isn't college grand? ;)

This text was required as part of my 2013 Spring semester course in Software Engineering. Fortunately, it was on sale here for about $75 instead of the almost $200 they wanted at the university bookstore.

Unfortunately, despite the mandate of having it we hardly used it so I can't say I really got my money's worth. Most of the course content was delivered via slides and notes via the web.

For what little I did use of it, it seemed to be a decent guide to the basic principles of software engineering. It covers all the usual suspects: Design Models, Testing, Agile, Scrum, Use Cases vs. User Stories, Templates, etc.

If you are a programmer/software engineer that wants to take your team coding to the next level, then this is probably a good reference book for you to keep.

Lots of good advices but...

Don't get me wrong, this is a nice book with lots of advices. The reason it scored lower is because I already read almost everything that was in it on ihaveanidea.org, in the 'Ask Jancy' section by Janet Kestin and Nancy Vonk. So you can imagine my disappointment when I started reading it!

Has all the answers any junior creative could ask

This is basically an Q/A book written by two highly respected CDs along with several contributions from other members of the creative world. Along with the Q/A there are short stories about experiences, helpful advice as well as explanations of the real world of advertising. Its like sitting one on one with an old friend, some of the answers are funny and just comforting.

Picke Me? Yes, Pick It.

Shakespeare was just another hack! This book rocks! And it's not only for aspiring ad people and juniors - actually every senior should read it! The only problem with this book is that it's just a teaser for Neil French's book...

EDIT: Yes, I STILL want to read Neil French's book after the whole female creative affair. Idiots...
P.S: I absolutely agree with Christopher Locke when he says that the couple of pages by Brian Millar is worth the price of the book itself. I don't know the guy but he should really write a book if he didn't write one already

The book's four parts in turn discuss the nature and reality of stress; the relationship between stress and spirituality; practical strategies for finding equilibrium and letting go of stress; and some success stories. Throughout, Seaward intersperses brief meditation and journaling exercises. Yet the book feels hollow. While Seaward touches on some profound Taoist principles—as one might expect, given the book's title—he fails to investigate these teachings in any depth. Instead, he uses them as a broad, a priori template for an "ageless wisdom" held by generic "wisdom keepers." He then cites examples of this wisdom from a wide range of other sources and traditions, including Native American spirituality, Joseph Campbell's writings, and DNA research. This lack of focus is exacerbated by the text's habit of substituting unsatisfying anecdotes for a probing exploration of a given point. A Treasure Trove of Wisdom Awaits You

If you are like me, you have spent many years exploring the vast array of self-help, spiritual, and psychological "fix-it" books available. Although I definitely gleaned lots of interesting information from my countless readings, I somehow had not yet been able to fully understand the innermost workings of my own mind/heart/spirit. I had begun a journey of my own, many times over, but just kept going in circles because I couldn't find the best way to begin. Which school of thought to study in? I had begun to see similarities and overlapping messages, but I still couldn't pull everthing together and make sense of it.

I owe tremendous gratitude to Brian Luke Seaward for helping me to see farther inside myself than I'd ever been able (or dared) to before. I was first introduced to his work in late 2002. Since that time I have learned valuable lessons that have helped me to cope with extraordinarily stressful situations, deal more effectively with the unknowns in life, and to, ultimately, be more than ever someone who can still retain some sense of peace, joy and hope even living in this world as it now sits in the midst of tremendous turmoil. Mr. Seaward has graciously gathered so much priceless information here and made it understandable in theory, yet completely applicable to one's own life. This book could really be your only text for a class called "Self, Stress, and Spirituality 101".

"Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart"

In many ways, it takes a great deal of courage and conviction to

stand up in today's society, and an unfailing commitment to one's

personal beliefs. When the markets are geared for more, and instant gratification everywhere one turns...we stress and get overloaded. A very deep and personal connection to nature and the natural environment, is in my mind, essential to staying grounded and acknowledging the truth for what it really is.

Now, more than ever before, it seems that humans are on the very threshold of change, positive change we pray for, we hunger for it, we desperately need it to nourish our souls.

In "Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart", Dr. Brian Luke Seaward shares his life's journeys and stories of uncovering the courage and conviction that reside within each of us; those "nuggets" of spirit and wisdom, faith and belief that help to bring our "fearless hearts" forward to help unlock our mind sets for new opportunities to grow and flourish.

Reason for hope

It was in the early '90's that I was experiencing emotional burnout equivalent to an extended 'dark night of the soul'. It was then that I first began reading this author's work while in search of tools to bring light back into my days. Reading Dr. Seaward's books, and even hearing him speak at our Unity Church, I learned even more! I felt I had 'past the course' and could, in some ways teach it myself. Then this year I got 'sent back' a few years when problems with major surgery left me in great pain and some what homebound. Then I discovered his new book, 'Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart.' With it, I was able to take a deep breath and begin to explore hope again. I found exercises in this book that stretched and strengthen the 'muscles' of my soul. Am I 'all well'? Not yet! Have I found a path back? Most certainly! His first book, 'Stand Like Mountain' was my textbook on life that I've treasured for many years. Now, just when I most needed it, as I go though major 'winds of change' his sequel, Quiet Mind has come to give me 'winds of grace.' With humble gratitude, I encourage everyone to give themselves this reason for hope, 'A Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart.'

Whether you are interested in sprucing up your personal image or that of an organization, Chris Hilicki has a refreshing approach to brand identification and enhancement. Chris challenges you to examine yourself and identify who you are and to then capitalize on that uniqueness. She encourages you to bring your life guiding experiences, principles and values to light, for them to compliment and color your brand. She champions the concept of being yourself, first and foremost. You don't need to emulate or become like anyone else, because the genuine, unique you is the real brand that cannot fail. Much more than a business book!

I picked up the book looking for ideas on how to promote our business and my book. I came away with ideas for improving my life. Who ever guessed a business book could be so fascinating and gripping? I learned how to utilize my personal experiences to become proud of who I am, and to learn to use this to help others. Very valuable information for an author! After all that, I remembered why I bought the book in the first place and realized it really did show me how to brand my book and our business. A perfect book for those of us who must learn business and don't really enjoy the process--this book is educational, entertaining, and motivational all at the same time.

Beginning to intermediate level

Ever wonder about the outputs that have the term plan in the PMBOK are ? i.e. Project Plan, Communication management plan or Risk management plan. This book gives template which are filled by the books example project a "water amusement park" with guidance on how to write them. And other templates such Request For Proposal and Status meetings. It will definitely shed light on what these articles are to the newcomer to the PMBOK or project management. However I was not overly impressed with the contents, perhaps the authors were trying to keep it generic and not too complicated for the reader. The CD ROM is an exact duplicate of the book in MS-Word format. So don't expect any more on the CD, a disappointment to me. The book seemed to be missing on templates for budgets, time keeping, work completed and more. Not for a seasoned project manager.

Talks down to readers and uses unrealistic assumptions

I purchased both this title and "The Insider's Guide to Real Estate Investing Loopholes" (same authors).

I have two primary complaints. The authors talk down to the reader, constantly making snarky comments that imply that if one doesn't act NOW, the reader is lazy, or paralyzed, or is somehow inept when it comes to business. That's not just annoying -- it's weird, and it made me suspicious of the authors' motives.

That brings me to my second complaint. The book lacks balance. I'm not saying that all of the strategies can't work -- just that it requires an ideal set of market conditions for them to work. We need to see low or declining interest rates, quickly rising tenant incomes, improving neighborhoods, distressed or at least disinterested sellers, few other investors, low insurance costs, and a plethora of service providers (such as roofers) who do great work at a low price very quickly. I can tell you that we don't have any of those factors at work now.

What we do have, at least in areas like mine, where appreciation has outpaced incomes, is a market turned on its head. Sellers will not sell because they are sitting on huge profits for the most part, and don't have to sell. Or, they believe that prices will appreciate at the same ridiculous rate that they did from 2001-2005. Numerous Dolf-inspired investors have flooded the market and bid prices up beyond all reason. Workers are in debt and don't have much money for rent. Neighborhoods where deals are affordable aren't improving, so the idea of refinancing because you painted and put up a new mailbox won't help you. Easy mortgage money has gotten anyone with a pulse into homes. Interest rates are rising, not falling. Insurance is costly and the coverage stinks. And most importantly, rents do not provide positive cash flow for most small real estate investors. I know several who actually consider themselves to be successful and the news is not good. They are carrying their properties, their properties are not carrying them! I know, it's hard to believe that this is success. But in the past few years, appreciation has bailed them out. Put that kind of leverage into effect and you are leveraging a negative, which only means you go broke faster.

A few observations: First, if making untold riches were this simple and this obvious, then so many people would attempt to do so that it would suck the potential profit from such deals down until the actual profit is more equivalent to the amount of work involved. (More about this in a moment -- because I believe that this is actually occuring in part due to all of the real estate evangelism going on.)

As they say on Wall Street: "When enough people find the key to the market, someone changes the lock!" I believe that most people reading this review are smart enough to know that markets are dynamic. Outrageous profits bring in a flood of new entrants, dramatically reducing the profit potential. If a whole bunch of new wannabe real estate tycoons start lining up to bid on properties, then the prices for those properties will rise, as will the price for the money (the financing charges in the form of interest rates). Even without a lot of new entrants, if enough people start using the same financial techniques of leverage, cost-benefit analysis, or tax strategies, then the advantages to be gained will be reduced commensurately. Common sense and basic real-world economics dictate that costs will rise and potential profits will fall. And so it is in the real estate world.

Economies of scale and technological advancements have changed many industries and wiped out others. The ability for a small business person to get a competitive bid on anything is severely limited, whether you are talking about insurance, waste collection, land, communication services, landscaping, or anything else. Big players have the advantage in negotiations and will consistently be able to lower their costs below that a single investor. They can offer their tenants more amenities and constantly remodel and update their units at a far lower cost than you or me. I can't start a profitable shipbuilding company or TV network, nor can I jump into owning large buidings over which I can spread my costs enough to justify what is increasingly becoming break-even or negative cash flow from tenants.

I am not saying that there will never again be opportunities for small real estate investors to use leverage and tax advantages to make decent money. Just that, with so many of your fellow investors looking to do the same thing, you are not going to find (DEEP BREATH HERE!): underpriced positive cash-flowing properties in undervalued neighborhoods with great potential on which you can quickly close at a dynamite interest rate that result in quickly-rented units with stable, high-earning tenants who are happy to stick around so you can quickly refinance at "massively increased property valuation" (Dolf's expression) so you can pay yourself and your investors back, raise rents even higher and go on to the next property with similar ideal parameters, plunk 10% down and do the same thing.

And no, I'm not an unmotivated individual who works harder than I have to, doesn't understand the value of money, or doesn't want financial freedom. We all want that. In Dolf's world, there are numerous individuals who can't wait to to sell you $100 for $50. My question is, if he knows how to get people to do that, why he is telling us about it? I think we all know the answer to this question.

Don't get me wrong: Eventually, the property marketplace will right itself and investment properties will come up that offer opportunity to even small investors, even with the odds stacked against you. However, it won't unlock some kind of magical door to riches. It will simply be one of many investments that helps you build LONG-TERM wealth. Real estate is just another business that goes through cycles and isn't necessarily any more of a path to fabulous riches than owning a chain of gas stations or making molded plastic products.

By the way, the most successful real estate investment firms in America have had a total return about 23% annually for the past five years through March 31, 2006. That includes dividends and share price appreciation. If that's the BEST they can do, (and I'm not saying it's bad...it's actually an amazing performance!), it's because that's the BEST anyone can hope to do, including you and me. Remember, these firms use all the leverage they can muster and have tremendous economies of scale, and the smartest tax accountants and attorneys working on their behalf. We are highly unlikely to see this performance repeated in real estate for the next five years or possibly, ever.

Footnote: I recently studied single family homes in Broward County and Palm Beach County, Florida. Over the past thirty-five years, not including taxes of any kind, residential properties have enjoyed an average annual return of 9.25% per year. Short-run performance tends to regress towards the mean. Therefore, we are virtually assured that real estate will come nowhere close to its recent performance over the next several years, particularly in a higher-interest rate environment with lots of new supply. Buyer beware!

Read this book if you are serious about becoming a real estate investor.

I first learned of Dolf De Roos a few years ago from reading one of his first books that was released through the Rich Dad, Poor Dad series. I have read every one of his books and find his comments about real estate to be "right on the money". He shows you why real estate is the best place to invest and also how you can increase your profits by looking for unique situations. Very valid advice and a very good read. I highly recommend this book.

This guy reaches out to people.

Of all the real estate books that I have read or checked out and of all the real estate gurus that I have checked out, Dolf is the best.

This book goes beyond Real Estate Riches. Dolf explains h ow to purchase commercial property. He also explains how to spot property with a below-value "twist."

And there is more, like:

* No-fail mortgage application

* Purchase and sale clauses that work

* Make offers with seller appeal

* The offer; yield a bit or stand your ground?

* Settlement and possession structure

* Proposals for finance

* Ensuring that tradespeople do your jobs first

* Cutting non-performing tenants loose

My business has been primarily network marketing. Using Dolf de Ross real estate strategies has provided me with an additional stream of income as well as reducing my tax bill.

Real estate is somewhat like network marketing in that you can start with very little money, use leverage and create exponential growth.

Great book. A must read.
