He is a member of the Society for Technical Communication. The APL Subcommittee of the Sabbatical Fellows and Professors Programs appointed him a Stuart S. Janney Fellow to write this book.

A Complete Technical Reference for Scientific Reports

How to Prepare Defense-Related Scientific and Technical Reports is a combination how-to book and style guide with information that could very well be applied to any industry. Although the amount of detail is tremendous, this is one of the first books I have read that really provides step-by-step guidance for a professional scientific report with no need to pick and choose portions out of each chapter. The chapter sequence is well-designed and walks you through each aspect of the technical report.

Rice provides a history of the technical report, a background on his approach to this subject matter, and his background in providing technical expertise while serving on a committee on scientific and technical reports for the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Information Standards Organization (NISO).

The chapter contents give an excellent combination on ANSI/NISO technical report guidelines, beginning with formatting: report number formats, preparation of abstracts, and details of publishing requirements. I was also surprised at the amount of detail written about author and non-author responsibilities, report review and distribution, and marking requirements for both classified and non-classified documents.

The book contains an almost step-by-step guide to the front matter, body text, and back matter of a scientific report, covering every topic from cover page to heading levels to footnote symbols and their use.

Much attention was also given to the organization and design of reports, providing not only contextual guidelines for report publication, but also an ample amount of graphic examples for tables, columns, margins, image areas, placement of warning notices, emblems, and other graphical inserts contained in the report. There are detailed descriptions and accompanying illustrations for the orientation of tables and figures, which are great for future reference.

And just when I was sure this book only detailed the issues of print publication, Mr. Rice provides a section on the role of the editor in online markups and explains that the print versions are still favored because they provide an easy-reading alternative versus the eye strain of online reading.

Walter Rice has covered everything from cover page to appendix and then gives you more. He provides everything you need to write a successful scientific report--all in one book! If you are planning on writing a scientific technical report, I suggest you read this book first. After absorbing the guidelines provided in this book, all you will need are the words.

How to Write Dull but Precise

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the Defense Department has a written set of standards on how to write technical reports -- ANSI/NISO Z39.18.1995. It also has it's own style guide, 60 pages long, complete with it's own set of approved abbreviations, i.e. DOTMLPF - doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, and facilities.

This book is written by a member of the committee that produced ANSI/NISO Z39.18.1995 and is written with the combined goals of explaining the requirements along with doing so in a manner that can be easily understood and followed by the person charged with preparing documents. As such, this work is not written like the documents is is telling you how to write. In fact, it is written so that you can make sense out of it.

Deeper thinking about curriculum

John D. McNeil's Comprehensive Introduction introduces the reader to the Academic, Humanistic, Social Reconstruction, and Technological philosopical views of curriculum. His even-handed treatment shows how each philosophy can be valuable for curriculum development. I think his book is especially important for practicing teachers. From a teacher's viewpoint, this book helps us think beyond the day to day demands of the classroom to the greater point of our curriculum. When we think about subject matter, the academic philosophy can guide us to either within discipline ideas or cross-disciplinary ideas like multiple intelligences. Humanistic perspectives are important for understanding the affect of our students. Social Reconstruction enables us to see society as a source for curriculum: we can adapt to problems out there, i.e. offer AIDS education, or work to change fundamental power relationships. Finally, the technological philosophy trains us to task analyze our curriculum, making sure each problem is broken into understandable, component parts. McNeil deftly shows us how to combine and consider each philosophy, with reference to curriculum classics like Ralph Tyler's Rationale. His chapters on politics, and directions in the subject matter fields remind us that curriculum philosophies are subject to influences from the outside world. Yet the book leaves teachers with a sense of empowerment, that they can make meaningful curriculum in their classrooms and schools.

I bought this for my graduate class. It has a great deal of interesting information and I have learned a lot from it so far. I've read about half of it. It is not a very fast read or exciting. It is useful if you are interested in learning more about educational curriculum.

Outdated boring and one-sided. Provides endless information about history of curriculum and is somewhat skewed in its perspective. Does not apply to current standards as mandated by government. Views presented on vocational education belong in the 1950s. Unfortunately I was forced to endure this for a course.

A Helpful Manual for Organizations and Coach Trainers

"Law & Ethics in Coaching" is a compilation of 10 chapters by professional coaches and coach trainers. Each chapter takes up a different aspect: background on ethics, developing and maintaining client trust, developing coaching competence, ethical use of assessments, legal issue, culture & ethics, and a few other topics. Not the most riveting of topics, but well written and very practical!

Despite the title, there's not a lot in the book about coaching and specific laws, which is good since all laws are localized. Ethics on the other hand, have a broader scope. The various authors appear to be based in the USA, but also purport a lot of international expertise. One chapter speaks to the intersection of ethics and culture.

Although most coaches would benefit from reading this book, it's a great resource for supervisors/mentors of coaches, coach trainers, or someone developing internal coaching guidelines and policies for an organization.

About the Author

Steven M. Bachrach, PhD, is the Dr. D. R. Semmes Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.?Dr. Bachrach has published 100 articles. With the support of the National Science Foundation and the Welch Foundation, he is currently researching computational approaches used to understand nucleophilic substitution reactions and the role of solvents. Dr. Bachrach has been a leader in "Internet Chemistry"; he edited the book The Internet: A Guide for Chemists and served as editor of the Internet Journal of Chemistry.

Organic chemistry by computer

Organic chemists busy themselves with the synthesis and physical characterization of carbon-based molecules. So far, several hundred thousand molecules have been synthesized in the laboratories around the world; most of them are chemical creations that cannot be found in Nature. The synthesis of an organic molecule may require several dozen, difficult steps each concerned with a small change in the molecular structure until the final product is obtained. Elucidating the mechanisms of these reactions, however, has greatly benefited from the combined use of computers and specialized software developed by computational chemists. Hence, Computational Organic Chemistry (the title of Bachrach's book) is now an important playground for both computational and organic chemists.
This book contains seven chapters; Chapter 1 is an introductory chapter discussing about a variety of quantum chemistry methods (e.g. Hartree-Fock, DFT, etc.) that can be applied to the study of organic molecules and their associated reactions. Chapter 2 is concerned with general issues encountered in organic chemistry such as bond-dissociation energies and aromaticity. The subsequent chapters deal with specific reactions (pericyclic reactions, reactions involving anions and carbenes) and with important aspects related to environmental (solution phase) and dynamics effects. Each chapter (2~7) ends with an interview to a prominent computational chemist and a very reach list of references. In each chapter there are discussions on specific organic reactions and how they have been investigated computationally by various authors. Although to become a skillful computational (organic) chemist you will need many years of practice in front of your own desktop PC, this book will reduce the activation energy barrier and teach you many clever approaches useful in the study of complex organic molecules and their associated reactions.

for organic chemists, not mathematicians

as an organic chemist, i would rate this book among the best to have come out in the past 20 years. first let me say what it is not. it is NOT a rigorous and comprehensive elaboration of the mathematical underpinnings of computational chemistry, NOR does it deal with the implementation and approximation (solution) of the mathematically derived equations thru computer programming. if that is what you seek, this title is not for you.

the emphasis of this book is clearly on organic chemistry, but it does contain a sufficiently thorough introduction to the underlying theory and mathematics in a way that is useful to a chemist who may not have an advanced command of mathematics, but wants to use the available computational software packages to answer practical questions about organic chemistry with some degree of confidence that they have chosen a computational method that is appropriate to the task at hand. it also describes some of the current problems with which computational chemists are wrestling. the writing is clear, lucid, and the book is extremely well organized, with a healthy dose of current references provided. it should remain relevant for a good while in a field that is rapidly progressing. bravo.

Great learning source

I found this book to be a good source for review on how the author came up with the formulas and MINI-TAB references were good. I would have rated it 5 stars but there were settings in the MINI-TAB software that needed to be turned on and for a beginning student I found it a little difficult to come up with the same answers without knowing why the author used the non-default mini-tab settings.

When I read Montgomery's book on "Introduction to Statistical Quality Control" I was doubly happy to have at last a solid book on SQC and when I started underlining important points, it so happened that I had to underline almost all of the pages in his book(Not overdoing).See my full review on his above book.

However, when I started solving some of the problems at the end of the each chapter, I longed for a solutions manual which solves some of the interesting problems presented there.
When I searched for more books on SPC, I luckily hit upon this solutions manual and it was in my hands in the next 7 business days from Amazon.
I feel relaxed now as I can go through the exercises any time and have the answers verified from the solutions manual which increases my confidence many fold.

This solution manual generally explains in detail how to solve odd-numbered problems. Sometimes it might skip some steps, but that's on the later numbers and you probably already know how to do them.

The only problem I seem to find is that it skips problems based on questions on understanding material without doing math.

SI Units??? COME ON PEOPLE!!!

SI units for a college textbook is fine but not in a "professional reference" to be used in United States industry. This book is decent, but to continually have to convert units (in fast-paced competitive environments)makes it almost unusable.

I have not received the product and I am being jerked around by the seller. I have noticed other people are having the same problem. This is the first instance of a problem I have had with Amazon and I have bought numerous items. This was an expensive purchase that was needed for an upcoming test and the service is unsatisfactory. I will not buy this type of item from Amazon again.

About the Author
EDWARD I. ALTMAN, PhD, MBA, is the Max L. Heine Professor of Finance at the Stern School of Business, New York University. Since 1990, he has directed the research effort in fixed income and credit markets at the NYU Salomon Center. Previously, Altman chaired the Stern School's MBA program for twelve years. He was inducted into the Fixed Income Analyst Society's Hall of Fame in 2001 and is an advisor to many financial, consulting, and governmental institutions. Dr. Altman is the Chairman of the Academic Advisory Council of the Turnaround Management Association and a member of its Board of Directors.

EDITH HOTCHKISS, PhD, is Associate Professor of Finance at Boston College. Her research has been published in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Corporate Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of Financial Intermediation. Excellent research & source book

High quality data and right up to date (Autumn 2006). The book is helpfully divided into two parts ~ the first half explains many of the useful topics needed to understand restructured debt and corporate distress and the second half gives detailed advice on building or understanding typical models on default probablities and the risk return assessment of distressed debt together with practical examples of valuing distressed companies and their debt. It also includes summaries of the legal implications, but there are much better books on that subject. I thought this was good value for the money.

More relevant than you think.

Most people in the investing world don't read this book. But they should. It's a textbook so not something to breeze through at the beach. However, the techniques described in the book are very applicable to any company, not just those in disress or bankruptcy. In fact I did some work on EMC many years ago when they *appeared* to be growing rapidly but in reality they were getting into trouble. This was way back in the early 1990's when the stock collapsed from $78. Having shared my analysis with Wall Street types at the time I soon found myself there!

The main point is you can use this type of analysis effectively and because most people in general equity investing don't, it just might give you a bit more edge.

Corporate Financial Distress and Bankruptcy

I'm a beginner to investing in distressed debt and bankrupt companies so this book was a good introduction for me. I did wish there was a bit more detail on valuing and buying the bonds of distressed and bankrupt companies, but the book provided a good overview of the legal process and did provide some very valuable tables of default rates and historical risk levels.

The authors could have eliminated some of the academic discussions of competing theories of valuation and market theories. I'd love to find a book that really took a step by step practical approach for the small investor looking to buy distressed debt (much like The Intelligent Investor did for equities), but this was a great start and well worth reading for the beginner.
