“Your book Managing, Controlling, and Improving Quality worked out very well in my senior-level class in the past fall semester. Actually students really liked the book. I planned to cover a little bit of acceptance sampling plans but I didn’t have sufficient time. I did cover Chapter 9 Reliability though. It was a great mix of managing aspects of quality, tools and techniques of quality control and design of experiments, plus a little bit of reliability. Students were happy and I was also happy. Book Review

I am a college professor of Industrial Engineering and this book was used in my junior-level quality engineering course in the fall semester of 2010. It turned out that my students were very happy with the book. I think this is an exellent book. It presents an organized approach to quality management, control, and improvement. This book was written at an introductory level easily read by engineers, scienctists, and quality professionals. I believe that the material can also be selectively and profitably applied by instructors or practitioners with basic statistical experience. One of the authors, Douglas Montgomery, has a unique ability to explain complex issues in plain English and with persuative graphics. This book is visually appealing and the index is extensive, making it easy to find topics and to use the book as a textbook or a reference. To sum up, given the topics that are covered, the particular methods used to confront the problems presented, and the ease with which these methods may be implemented, this incomparable volume has important theoretical underpinnings and a depth of discussion that is seldom found in similar books. This book is destined to remain the definitive textbook for undergraduate students in business, engineering or management or a reference on quality management/engineering for many years to come. I do recommend this outstanding book over all others.

Okay, I currently use this book for my QA class in college.

This book symbolizes the epitome of lack of Quality.
Countless errors and omission of important concepts in the book make this book unbearable to read.

They expect you to know a formula without them giving it to us.

I am personally ashamed of my prof. choosing this book as our textbook.

This book is riddled with errors. There are typos on nearly every page, including within some of the formulas. Many of the example problems also have mistakes in them. This is the most unprofessionally produced textbook I've ever seen. This book is barely worth the cost of shipping. Do not purchase it if you have any other option.

About the Author
THOMAS F. BUDINGER, MD, PhD, is Professor in the Department of Bioengineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley; Professor in Residence in the Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Francisco; head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine & Functional Imaging at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.

MIRIAM D. BUDINGER, MD, is a pediatrician and physician scientist with a career that has focused on adolescent medicine, infectious diseases, and the design and conduct of clinical trials in immunocompromised patients. She is currently a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.

Great book!

This is a really good book. VERY in depth and VERY detailed about a heck of a lot of pressing issues today. It really is a nice reference to have without having to google and search through a lot of filler material, this book gets straight to the point of all the current emerging issues.

Examples, graphs, statistics, equations, and a lot of references help you to understand not only what the issue is about, but most importantly the differing points of views that may exist, the moral dillemas, and possible solutions.

I not only enjoyed reading a lot of these just for my own pleasure in order to quench my appetite for some subjects and also strengthen my own arguments should I ever get into a discussion about the topics; but being in medical school, I know a lot of these issues WILL come up in practical scenarios and must be addressed, this book will help me do that in many ways.

An important book, should be a required course at all technical colleges and business schools.

This is a textbook designed for an ethics course but makes fascinating reading for anyone who is interested in the ethical dilemmas that come with advent of technology. It made me think of business school where Ethics was a required course and a majority of the students voted for it as the best course they took during business school. What made this course so very powerful and personal was that it was designed around real cases and moral dilemmas (e.g. Enron, Fortune companies overlooking child labor). Through discussion we realized what paths were possible and what paths were actually taken by the leaders of the companies. At the end of the class the professor always left us with a question hanging in the air "What would you do if you were in this situation?". It was always sobering as the class sat in silence, minutes after the professor left, reaching deep into their psyche to determine what they might have done given similar circumstances. The answers were not always pleasant and differed based on cultural differences (cultural relativism)or "duty ethics", some of the concepts discussed in this book. It was a life defining course for me, and helped me understand how small business decisions can have far reaching consequences.

I gave so much background about my business school experience to make the argument that ethics should be a mandatory course for any undergraduate and graduate college. And this book is a good text book for such a course. Although it focuses on technology and will be especially relevant to technical students - engineering/medical, it should be required for all colleges as technology touches us in every aspect of life.

Often we make decisions which concern technology even in our daily lives - to use material found on the web in our write up, or to send spam mail, without thinking about ethics and consequences of our actions. This book lays out the basic premises in the beginning and then delves into each of the emerging technology topics one by one. The "Problem Sets" at the end of each chapter are designed so that they can be undertaken before you delve into the chapter. Some of them require legwork, such as, going to a store and asking them how they will use the information acquired when signing up for the club card. Or email sites who do not have an explicitly stated privacy policy. Others require research - such as forming an opinion on the Kyoto protocol or discuss how far they would go to implement projects that have environmental impact. This is the first book I have seen on this subject and although some technologies may have already advanced beyond what is stated in the book, the fundamental questions remain the same.

About the Author
Gerard J. Tortora is Professor of Biology and former coordinator at Bergen Community College in Paramus, New Jersey, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as microbiology. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and his master's degree in science education from Montclair State College. He is a member of many professional organizations, such as the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAS), National Education Association (NEA), and the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists (MACUB).

Above all, Jerry is devoted to his students and their aspirations. In recognition of this commitment, Jerry was the recipient of MACUB's 1992 President's Memorial Award. In 1996, he received a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) excellence award from the University of Te4xas and was selected to represent Bergen Community College in a campaign to increase awareness of the contributions of community colleges to higher education. Jerry is the author of several best-selling science textbooks and laboratory manuals, a calling that often requires an additional 40 hours per week beyond his teaching responsibilities. Nevertheless, eh still makes time for four or five weekly aerobic workouts that include biking and running. he also enjoys attending college basketball and professional hockey games and performances at the Metropolitan Opera House.

Bryan Derrickson is Professor of biology at Valencia community College in Orlando, Florida, where he teaches human anatomy and physiology as well as general biology and human sexuality. He received his bachelor's degree in biology from Morehouse college and his Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Duke University. Bryan's study at Duke was in the Physiology Division within the Department of Cell Biology, so while his degree is in Cell Biology his training focused on physiology. At Valencia, he frequently serves on faculty hiring committees. He has served as a member of the Faculty Senate, which is the governing body of the college and as a member of the Faculty Academy committee (now called the Teaching and Learning Academy), which sets the standards for the acquisition of tenure by faculty members. Nationally, he is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

Bryan has always wanted to teach. Inspired by several biology professors while in college, he decided to pursue physiology with an eye to teaching at the college level. He is completely dedicated to the success of his students. He particularly enjoys the challenges of his diverse student population, in terms of their age, ethnicity, and academic ability, and finds being able to teach all of them, despite their differences, a rewarding experience. His students continually recognize Bryan's efforts and care by nominating him for a campus award known as the "Valencia Professor Who Makes Valencia A Better Place to Start." Bryan has received this award three times in the past six years.

Excellent textbook!

I recently finished an introductory course in anatomy/physiology, and this was the textbook we used. It is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the various systems that compose our bodies. I would recommend this for anyone who wants a basic understanding of the body without having to go to medical school.

Excellent drawings of body structures

Book is very good at keeping "fluff" material to a minimum. The drawings are wonderful (better than the actual anatomy dummies). It is hard material so I would get text early and pre-read as much as you can before class starts to leave more time for studying later.

I ordered and received 2 of these books. They are supposed to come with a CD, but neither one did. Hence, I returned them both. If they were to come complete they would be awesome. Otherwise they are useless.

A "Must Have" Handbook

This book covers all the bases including human resource planning, financing, managing markets and the all important role of assessing the technologies. A "Must Have" text for anyone chartered with the task of managing the chaotic and fast paced world of emerging technologies.
This book is extreemely well organized and carries the reader through the entire management process. It reinforced and validated many aspects of managing this type of technology that were I personally had to learn by trial and error. Likewise, it provided new alternatives and other key learnings that made reading the book a worthwhile experience. It provides an alternate and improved framework for evaluating this new type of technology, while exposing the pitfalls of applying traditional evaluation techniques.

An overall disappointing effort

I approached this book with an inclination to like it. I'm a firm believer in market timing, and I jumped at the chance to learn some new ideas about using the fixed-income markets to time the stock market. I have to say, though, that I came away from Timing the Market frustrated and disappointed. Here's why.

Throughout the book, there is a chart detailing various buys and sells that one supposedly could have made using the author's timing system. However, rather than deriving these buy and sell points systematically, the author seems to choose buy and sell points that would have worked best in retrospect without regard for whether or not they fit into a coherent, replicable system.

For example, in chapter 7 the author adds buy points to her chart right after the waterfall declines in October 1987, September 1998 and September 2001. What is the rule that guides these choices? Apparently, it is that the Fed lowered the fed funds rate at least one-half of one percent after a crash of some kind. This rule is apparently a sufficient but not a necessary condition of buying because numerous other buy points on her chart don't involve this rule at all. So IF you hadn't already committed funds because of other rules, you MIGHT have been able to buy then.

Later in the book, on the basis of a breadth-based rule about the Dow 30, the author erases the September 2001 buy signal and records a buy signal for her system on July 19, 2002, near the ultimate bottom of the bear market. This is based on the fact that all 30 Dow Jones Industrial Average stocks declined on the same day. I see IN RETROSPECT why she did this, but how would you have known in September 2001 to wait for the later buy signal? The author does not address these kinds of questions at all, as far as I can tell. As I said, frustrating and disappointing.

There may be value in Ms. Weir's concepts, but she has far to go if her aim is to develop a rigorous market timing system, in my opinion.

Excellent trading foundation!

This work provides an excellent, professional grounding for one's approach to the markets. The theoretical basis for this foundation is ongoing analysis and interpretation of the U. S. treasury yield curve, bond quality spreads, and movements of the federal funds rate. The author's exposition of the yield curve is the best I've seen. She divides her analysis of the yield curve into short-term money market segments, the traditional spread between ten year bonds and three month bills, and longer-term bonds. Each of these segments affords the analyst important information as to the the present and anticipated state of the economy -- which determines the earnings expectations that drive markets.

The second section of this book affords a somewhat different take on technical analysis than is usually encountered. The author explains how to use the volatility index (VIX) and the put/call ratio as indications of short-to-intermediate term market turning points. She also indicates how margin debt and short interest levels can be used to reveal long-term market highs and lows.

The third section of the book describes cultural and demographic methods for gauging the market climate. These methods are qualitative only; subject to interpretational error; and questionable in the separation of "fact" from one's psychological projection. However, used strictly as adjuncts to yield curve analysis and technical indicator confirmation, they can be quite useful as further confirming tools.

The fourth section describes how to use market timing in a profitable, top-down approach to riding the business cycle through rotation from fixed-income investments into equities, then hard assets, foreign currencies, and back into fixed-income instruments. The author details how intelligent asset rotation leads to more favorable portfolio results than does buy-and-hold over the long run.

The market timing model which the author evolves over the course of the book substantially beats a buy-and-hold portfolio and does so while experiencing less volatility. The timing model's rationality, operations, and results are clearly explained and documented to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of her approach.

This book is well-written. Its thesis is logical; well-developed; and supported with numerous examples, data, and around sixty pages of appendices. I feel that its methodology will help investors understand and identify forces which move markets as well as avoid those traps of crowd psychology which lead to participation in mass buying at market tops and mass selling at bottoms. This work is an interesting, original contribution to the literature of markets!

POS! Danger -- Don't make the same mistake I made!!

I bought this book awhile ago. Studied it. It all sounded so good. And then I tried to recreate the buy/sell signal data.... If you already own the book and are using it to make investment decisions, be sure to try this exercise and answer the question at the end.

Go to Appendix 2.1 on page 333. Let's dig into the sell signal on "2000-08-01" as an example. First of all, as Weir explains in her book on page 15-16, the Treasury data is a monthly average. The Three-Month Bill entry is 6.09. That is an average of the 3-month yields from 8/1/2000 to 8/31/2000 (using the daily rates from H.15 3-month Treasury Bill secondary market rate data). Since that is an average, it is known on 8/31/2000 at the earliest. The same is true for the Ten-Year note and therefore the yield spread. Other than the misleading date name in the table (2000-08-01), so far so good.

Now we have a signal to Sell on 8/31/2000, right? The S&P 500 Index for 8/31/2000 is 1517.68. (Yahoo's daily historical Prices for S&P 500 INDEX,RTH (^GSPC)). The "2000-08-01" entry in the book shows 1430 which is what the S&P 500 Index was for 7/31/2000, a month earlier. The same is true for all the entries in appendix 2.1.

So the question is: how is it that you can buy and sell an index based on signals you won't know until a month later?

Just the Push You Need

I had been sitting on the fence finishing my book. After reading Pursuit Of Passionate Purpose, I realized no one was going to finish the book but me and I didn't have forever to live my dreams. Each day that went by that I didn't do what I loved was a lost day. The book provided the push to discipline myself, focus my day, and live what I love. After reading the book, I finished the pieces I need to sell my book. But I loved the process of living my dream each day that I wrote. Thank you Theresa.

Keep on Exploring

I quit my job as a technician at Particle Measuring Systems in Boulder with reservations. I enjoyed the work and the people but felt I was not communicating well with certain engineers. Lizard (code name for one of the engineers)loaned me a wonderful book, though. It's called Pursuit of Passionate Purpose by Theresa Szczurek. That last name reminds me of the author of Flow -- Csikszentmihalyi. The Pursuit of Passionate Purpose deals with a topic Thomas Jefferson discussed: the battle between the heart and head in making decisions. I encourage everyone to read this book.

The book contains a practical method to support people in effecting the changes they are seeking. The stories of various people interviewed by the author are really interesting and inspiring.

JOEL G. SIEGEL, PhD, CPA, is Professor of Accounting at Queens College of the City University of New York. He is the author of sixty-seven books and has written hundreds of articles for accounting and financial journals. Great quick-reference guide for all business people

I found this guide to be a great resource for a variety of business needs. The cover of the book refers to it as a great reference for the CFO and the like. I want to expand that to say it is a great quick-reference book for all business people. Whether you're in entry-level sales, middle management, or executive level, you need to understand the financial basis for each decision. This book allows even a financial novice to quickly get enough information to intelligently approach financial issues.
