Stephanie M. Woo, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy Program (Malibu Campus) at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, California. She is also a consultant to RAND Corporation and Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA.
Carolyn Keatinge, PhD, is an Instructor and Clinical Supervisor at the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, California and a consultant to Boys and Girls Hope California. She is the coauthor of Rapid Psychological Assessment (Wiley).

The best mental health textbook I have ever read.

Excellent book. Concise writing style, good examples, tons of information. Most textbooks on mental health are long-winded and rely on too many vignettes. This book was to-the-point and informative. Out of all the books I bought in getting my MSW this is the only one I kept. (Sorry professors)

Refreshingly well written and concise

This is my 18th year in academia. I have suffered through countless textbooks written with one goal: publication. Authors that are too busy to create and write well, often end up with something indigestible and monotonous. Woo and Keatinge wrote a powerful book that is worth referencing again.
The subject of counseling/treatment across the lifespan is very broad, but W&K proved that they can both instruct and inform. The instruction is hard to explain in a simple Amazon review, but feels like the first time I'm really understanding counseling psychology - on a deeper level. The information goes beyond simple outlines and therapeutic treatments. The book acts as a primer for the DSM and dives headfirst into the politics of psychological disorders (i.e., managed care, DSM-V, etc.).
Most important is the effortless readability. This is written with the scientist-practitioner in mind. With a strong research foundation, the topics are well-supported and concisely delivered.
The first textbook worth keeping.
