An insightful, interesting and comprehensive book

Personality psychology is a unique subject dealing with individual differences in people, and this book does a superb job of addressing this topic. What I like most about this book is that it covers all the important and renowned theories in this field, such as Costa and McCrae's Big Five traits, Freud's idea of defense mechanisms, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Bandura's observational learning, Erikson's stages of psychosocial development and Bowlby's attachment styles among others.

These concepts may be seemingly diverse and unrelated, but McAdams manages to integrate them very well using his idea of three different levels of personality: forming an outline with traits, knowing some of the person's details through motivational, cognitive and developmental concerns and finally constructing an individual's life stories. All the concepts fit marvellously well within this framework.

In addition to the clear and concise writing, interesting and revelant narratives, anecdotes and examples are included. Moreover, within each chapter and at the end of each chapter, the important ideas and concepts are re-iterated and summarized.

Indeed, this book leaves the reader much more enriched and knowledgeable about ourselves and the people in our lives.

GET TO THE POINT ALREADY!!! OH BROTHER!!!

This text book is a joke! I study psychology, and personality is a very interesting aspect of the discipline. The writer of this book is too wordy. You will spend so much time reading about one subject, and they repeat the same point OVER and OVER. I want it fast and easy. I don't have all the time in the world.

If there is an aspect of personality that interests you, just go directly to the source. The book deals with a variety of topics, from evolutionary psychology, big five traits, psycho-social development and psychoanalytic psychology. I'm sure you are bound to find something that won't waste your time. I like my books to get right to the point.

SAVE MONEY AND BUY OLDER EDITIONS!!! If you find a textbook you want, go back a few editions until you can find it for under 10 dollars. Most of the time, new editions are just a scam to keep the price up!!! I do this with so many medical and pharmacology texts so that I don't waste hundreds of dollars. The material is basically the same. The only difference is new research that could recommend new techniques or uses for drugs isn't there. But you can always look that up online or in a scholarly journal. I mean, someone who graduated with a M.D. or PhD ended their education with that book, so you're not the only one a little behind. Save money and buy older editions.

I had to get this book for my online college course. The reason I cannot stand reading it is because the print is SO SMALL. if it wasn't for that, I would have given it 3 stars.

I also don't think it is a very well written book where one can easily understand the concepts.

This is a good book for the novice on what needs to be done to help protect your investments and see that they are dealt with properly when you become ill or die. It educated me on things I was completely ignorant of.

Right Wing Babble

If we could delete all the religious and lessons on morality combined with obvious right wing robotic thought process this might be a good book.This guy thinks he's the worlds foremost authouity on just about any decision you might want to make.The thing I found weird was he tells how to hide our money off shore so we won't have to pay tax or lose it in a lawsuit. I find that odd after all that stuff about God and morals ect...He also tells us we have to keep Grandma on life support even when all the doctors agree that she is a hopeless vegatable and could be in constant pain????

About the Author
Dr. Zerong Wang earned his Ph.D. at Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences.  He went on to a postdoctoral at the University of California, Berkeley to study enolate chemistry followed by a second postdoctoral at York University to explore the synthesis of nucleoside analogues.  Dr. Wang is currently an Associate Professor at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, with research interests in photochemistry, nucleosides, heterocycles, computational chemistry, and material science.

The first Project Management book that makes sense.

I've purchased a number of books on Project Management. They run the gamut from dry, cryptic self-congratulatory works of academic vanity to the disorganized and insultingly simplistic (including anything with the word "idiot's" in the title).
This is the first book I've read that I would consider appropriate for both seasoned PM's and those new to the discipline.
The format is great. For someone new to Project Management it has a logical, step by step flow backed up with relevant visuals and great case studies. For the more seasoned PM it is a treasure trove of problem-solving techniques, examples and formulas. It's not a book you'll be willing to loan to your friends (my copy looks to become one of the more "dog-eared" in my collection).
I run a small company but many of my clients are quite large (the companies, not the... nevermind). The concepts in "The Fast Forward MBA in Project Management" are adaptable to any size business and any size project; the case studies range from the development of the Boeing 767-400 to how Seattle's Safeco Field keeps their grass green. If the rest of "The Fast Forward MBA" series are as strong and results-oriented as this book, I may end up getting the collection.

All PM Professionals & Students Should Have a Personal Copy

Verzuh's book is at the top of its class. We just recently concluded a Project Management Seminar here in Barbados and this was the text used throughout the seminar. In addition, it's one of the standard texts on our Project Management Professional Diploma Program.
What most heady and highly theoretical writers on project management tend to do in over 500 pages, Verzuh achieved in 300 pages. He was able to demystify Project Management and present it in such a way that everyone out there with an interest in the subject area could follow. It would therefore be totally incongruous to review this book in academic jargon. By the same token, it perfectly compliments some of the more abstract academic texts that are out there.
We particularly found the chapter on the Work Breakdown Structure to be very useful since most amateurs will probably just buy a software package and command it intuitively without fully understanding the logic and problem solving behind the it. Verzuh's text will definitely help you to better understand the logic behind the software.
The text is highly recommended and our students love it.

This practical guide gives concise descriptions of the key concepts, skills and applications required to successfully navigate complex project management problems.
For theory questions and broad overviews, I usually consult Visualizing Project Management. For quick answers to troubling questions, I reach for this book.
The author lays out the concepts of project management in a structured, well-thought through pattern. Concepts build as you progress through the chapters. I particularly like the way the book dovetails with project management software. It correctly starts with project management theory the way it should be covered: work breakdown structures, risk management, earned value and communication. Only then is the theory applied to a software application. This approach recognizes that Project Management is both a science and an art form; at computer/software tools never supply magical answers.
The book's cover promises "Tough ideas made easy." This concise, well-written volume delivers.

Many examples from the hospitality industry but...

I have been teaching all the chapters of this book for 9 months. There are many examples from hospitality industry and, in this sense, the book is indeed fine. It is mainly indented for students who would like to learn the "very basics" (in order to "pass the course") and apply them in practice. From a more academic point of view, the book suffers in many respects. It is rather wordy and poor in substance since there are no clear-cut definitions of the concepts used. Further, and this is very negative for me, there is no even the least reasoning or proof for any of the formulae used. Thus, in the best case, it encourages the logic of "apply the formula and interpret the results". Also, some accounting identities and formulae are written simply in an unacceptable way, from mathematics (and logic) point of view. There are some mistakes in the exercises and the formulation of many exercises, especially of the large ones, is unnecessarily complicated, sometimes the answers in the answer sheet are wrong and the presentation of solution is occasionally chaotic. Since no constructive arguments are developed for the building of the formulae, students are "forced" to apply formulae in a "mechanical" way . The result is that, even in the least modification of the problem under consideration, students try to find "the" formula to apply it. Of course, we cannot blame only the book for this since many students convey this "idea" from their years in school. The book simply follows this learning stance. Due to lack of a constructing reasoning, students do not learn to modify a formula or to built another one from first principles, according to the problem at hand. Hence, not a really constructive thinking is developed. I am looking for other, more substantial alternatives.

NEVER AGAIN-- did not receive shipment

Had to reorder from another company--- lost shipment in transit since I paid for faster shipping-- and they still shipped it through the US Mail and it was not delivered in time for my paper. Very Dissapointed and probably will not order again.
