So Funny You Might Not Be Able To Breath

So funny that you might not be able to breath - unless you are one of the many CEO's described in the book! But who can say. Maybe they can laugh at themselves, maybe not.

I am reading a number of books at the moment and just received five new books from Amazon.com including this book. Needless to say, I dropped everything and read this book. It is simply a very funny and enjoyable book 375 pages long, but in large to medium font so you can read it in one or two evenings. Do not be put off or fooled by the book jacket that has an amateurish yellow photo and a girl in a short skirt. This is a well-researched and well-written book.

I read Martha Inc. by the same author Christopher Byron and thought it was a solid well-written book, that rang true, had a lot of research and interviews and was a page turner to read. He is a writer for the New York Post and very skilled as a writer. This book is a bit faster read and a bit lighter, and it jumps around to cover a variety of famous CEO's. I have just finished reading a series of longer books including "Stalin" by Montefiore plus some others and interestingly here Byron uses the same literary techniques as does Montefiore in his large and serious biography of Stalin. What he does is first look at many public sources on the CEO's, then he does interviews (90) to try and piece everything together and give context plus add new information, then he inserts black and white photographs into the book as we proceed, such as photos of Dennis and Karen Kozlowski, Ron Perelman's fourth wife Jack Welch together with Suzy Wetlaufer, etc. It makes it all very entertaining and a compelling light read.

There are many things that stick out in the book and I will not repeat those here, but in one case he compares different versions (hard cover and soft cover) of "Straight From the Gut" by Jack Welch and the author points out how the "soul mate" has changed in the book, and how the credit for Jack's second wife Jane was reduced from some fraction of a chapter in the first hard cover edition to one or two line in the soft cover version a few years later. But the accolades in one book are transferred to a new woman in the second version. It is amazing how one man's biography can quickly and retroactively change!

There are too many stories to repeat here but it is all very entertaining. The men come of as out of control classless fools, but in some cases they are aided and abetted by some wily or equally foolish women.

I am giving it 4 stars because of the humorous nature of the book, and light read. Strongly recommend and very funny.

The Problem With Corporate America

Read this book and you'll understand why these four American CEO's are in desperate need of a first rate psychiatrist! Each and every one of the men profiled in this book are an utter nightmare. Simply put, they a disgrace to our system regardless of how much money they've made for others. There is a solid arguement to be made that for every dollar they put in their own pocket, they took tenfold from someone else's. These icons of business, (at one point in time or another) are completely lacking in morals and ethics! What does it say about our culture that it promotes these types of personalities into such positions of power? This book will leave you feeling ashamed and angry at the decision makers. It seems our country is light years away from the very values our country was founded upon. How sad for the United States. How sad for Corporate America!

About the Author
CHARLES BIDERMAN is the founder and President of TrimTabs Investment Research. Born in New York City, he earned a BA from Brooklyn College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He began his career as Alan Abelson's assistant at Barron's from 1971 to 1973. After correctly predicting the collapse of real estate investment trusts, he became a successful real estate entrepreneur. Save your money!

I spent almost 20 bucks for this e-book that was written to pump their website and service.

Biderman claims altruistic intent to help the investor win the "stock market casino" against the corporate "house".

He charges $6,000 a year for his Trimtabs.com newsletters for "mostly institutional" investors but this 6K a year is the 60% off sub rate for individual investors. Some altruistic intent huh?

He does collest information but I found a website that gives away for free most of the info he collects and wants to sell for 6K a year. [...]

Most of the information he talks about in his book is freely available if you want to dig for it. On the the flip side he gives an interesting account of the rise and fall of the stock market in the 90's and early 00's in regards to "liquidity" theory.

In a nutshell, bet with the corporations and against the individual investor they are usually wrong. Like in 1929, 1987 and 2000, when the individual investor is hyped about the market, buy bonds. When everyone thinks the market sucks, buy stocks. There, you saved $20 to $30 bucks.

A Bargain Price for an Inside Look at Investing

This book is really different for the world of finance because it is frank and down-to-earth without making a lot of grandiose claims. As an individual investor, I am not interested in tracking company earnings but want to time my buy, move and rebalance decisions.

I could relate to the character in the first chapter. I was not as interested in the looking back section as much as the liquidity in action and the looking ahead sections. So, it's about reading the chapters that pertain to your investment goals.

There, I confess to skipping the more aggressive strategies but the point is that Biderman makes these strategies available. The view of supply and demand in the market is intriguing. This liquidity view seems to be an important piece of the puzzle. The author's voice is loud and clear. I like his candor. I think it's irrelevant what his company charges for research because this book gives me a rare inside look at how professional money managers might operate. Biderman sounds like someone I'd like to sit down with for a consultation.

New indicators for supply and demand of stocks

This book presents a series of indicators that track the supply of stocks from corporations and the demand of stocks by the public and investment firms. The author has devised these indicators over a long time but only recently (compared to other indicators) has put them together in a working system. His company provides updates to all of these indicators but the author also tells you how to prepare a number of them yourself.

It appears that the getting the data is somewhat difficult and messy. It thus borders more on art than science, as some data series come out late (but they are lagging indicators) and some data is just irregular or estimated.

The author's testing show great results over the exuberant 2000 decline, but I believe the time period of live testing has been too short and the messiness of the indicators themselves augur for more testing.

Please note that it is doubtful that the average investor can accumulate the data to replicate what the authors have proposed. However, there are spin-off indicator ideas that could be applied by the interested market-timer.

Also note that there are many researchers who say that market timing is impossible, and that any research pointing to success just used a small period of time where it worked. They also say that market timers who say their systems have worked over the last 70 years have either fit their data going backward, or are just a statistical anomaly.

However, most market timers say that market timing can increase your odds of success in the market many times (like double or triple your returns if you can avoid the worst 10% or 20% of the market). To apply the research of these authors, you have to believe that market timing actually works, or that you can shave the odds to your favor.

I like this book because it clearly lays out a new indicator methodology along with a rationale. It's up to the reader then to prove that the system works or that he can derive new, easier or better indicators on his own.

About the Author
MICHAEL B. SMITH, PhD, is Professor of Chemistry at the University of Connecticut. His current research interests include studies towards the total synthesis of pancratistatin and related phenanthridone alkaloids; synthesis and structural verification of bioactive bacterial ceramides; the study of reactions associated with or facilitated by conducting polymers; and, the synthesis of dye-conjugates to target cancerous tumors.

Jerry March, PhD, (deceased) was a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Adelphi University, Garden City, New York.

6th March is an excellent buy

It is very difficult to rewrite reviews for 6th edition of the "March". Classical flagships among textbooks and reference books in organic chemistry, unbeatable. With 7000 new refernces it brings unbelievable 25k reference citations, very well organized on the bottom of the pages. Excellent indexes, very good cross view between 5th edition and 6th edition aligning chapters of different numbering, perfect drawings made in CamSoft ChemDraw, etc. etc. As the text and accompanying material is polished and polished edition to edition, it is very difficult to do anything else but to praise this excellent reference book, which hardly could be omitted in any chemical laboratory. Not only that but hardcover book of 2357 pages for $73 at Amazon is not only a good book but also a good buy.

For general advanced organic Chemistry, this book is great!

This book is great, as most people said, awesome as a reference text. Covers most of the reactions, their mechanisms and the use of reagents. I guess this is one of those books which covers so much that your next step is your specialization. It is NOT a textbook, but there's a LOT you can learn out of it. There are hardly any topics left out of March, but there are a few things that I guess COMPLETE an organic Chemist - Heterocyclic chemistry, Pericyclic reactions, Biochemistry, Nomenclature.

But apart from that, this book doesn't EXPLAIN, but rather comes to the point at lots of places, and expects the reader to understand. If you're not into that, then I suggest Carey's advanced organic chemistry.

Still a classic

A good book overall, teaming with updated references and indispensable for the working organic chemist, graduate student, or advanced undergraduate.

Unfortunately, there is not much material on organometallic chemistry, which has gained in prominence in terms of recent synthetic methods. Also, there is a noticeable decline in editorial quality between the recent editions (5th and 6th) and previous editions. Schemes have been redrawn in ChemDraw, but some are poorly rendered, and there are missing formal charges, etc., as well as typos in the main text.

The Constitution is clear: the president is commander in chief of the armed forces, but Congress alone has the power to declare war. Yet, while war has been declared war only five times since the nation's birth, American forces have taken part in more than two hundred armed conflicts, large and small, overt and covert, on orders from the commander in chief.

In Presidents at War, military historian Gerald Astor examines the history and evolution of the president's most crucial role. Focusing on the period following World War II, he traces the history of America's post-war conflicts and asks probing questions about the meaning and import of each event. Did the president overstep his authority? Could Congress have prevented the commander in chief's actions? Is the Constitution, despite its apparent clarity, deliberately ambiguous on these matters? Does the United States' role as a superpower nullify constitutional restraints and laws enacted by Congress on a president's executive authority?

Drawing on new interviews with current and former members of Congress, unpublished oral histories by senior military officers, official papers, and other literature, Astor analyzes presidential justification for the United States' military adventures. His investigation deals with major actions, such as Truman's "police action" in Korea and George W. Bush's invasion of Iraq, as well as limited and covert measures, including Kennedy's Bay of Pigs invasion and Ronald Reagan's support for the Contras in El Salvador. While each of these presidents offered specific reasons for each action, an overriding theme emerges: as commander in chief, the president has assumed he has the authority to direct American military and paramilitary actions as he sees fit.

At the center of Astor's discussion are the Vietnam War, which involved four successive presidents, and an escalating series of actions taken under the commander-in-chief authority by George W. Bush in the current war in Iraq. Even more troubling, many of the commander in chief's specific justifications for and descriptions of these actions are now known to have been exaggerated or even false.

Concentrates on Undeclared Wars

This book should really be titled 'Presidents at UNDECLARED War.' During the years since the founding of the republic, the United States has only been in five declared wars. During those same years the United States military forces have engaged in more than two hundred armed conflicts. It is not a new thing, Wikipedia says: 'The first United States military action overseas, executed by the U.S. Marines and Navy, was the storming of Derna, Tripoli in 1805 in an effort to bolster diplomatic efforts in securing both the freedom of American prisoners and an end to piracy on the part of the Barbary state. The opening line of the Marine's Hymn, From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, refers to this action.'

This is a very interesting book in how it looks at the conflicts fought since World War II. It covers not the conflict itself so much the interaction between the President and Congress. It further raises interesting questions about how Congress acts in these cases. For instance in the vote regarding Iraq, Congress voted 77 to 23 in favor of the Iraq war.

With the current dissatisfaction regarding Iraq, it will be very interesting to see what happens, especially if the Democrats gain control of Congress.

Just your average textbook

This textbook is just your average textbook. For my class we had to buy an online code for the course which included the book all online, but comparing the two, I find the book much easier to read and review. The pictures help out and the author goes at a good enough pace as to where I can keep up and understand.

Excellent introductory physics

This is one of the BEST introductory physics texts ever written. It is clear and concise - and done at with the rigor needed for incoming STEM majors. In my mind the later versions (with the addition of Walker) are not as good. Those later version added a lot of fluff - and watered down the rigor.

Learnt my high school physics from this classic edition. The much simpler presentation and straightforward organization of content in this older edition is more conducive to learning than the newer edition (with Walker as the additional author) that is full of icons and pointers and all kinds of distracting things. I suppose the publishers wanted to keep up with contemporary large-format, bulky and expensive textbooks that seem to rule the roost these days. Physics is learnt by thinking clearly and doing problems, so a textbook should not distract from that. Diagrams should be as simple as possible to help with conceptualization.
