Interesting but a bit too ambitious and potentially misleading

Cressie and Wikle's book is one of the first to address space time models from a statistical point a view and using many of the latest statistical models (the soon to be updated 2003 book Hierarchical Modeling and Analysis for Spatial Data also covered the topic). Hierarchical space time models, Dynamical linear models, incorporating scientific knowledge into your statistical model, and handling massive data by using Fixed Rank Kriging are some of the topics covered. However, there are many intricacies that need to be addressed when modelling spatial data or temporal data. So writing a book covering data using both indices is no easy task. The task to write a book on spatio-temporal models only becomes harder when the goal is to cover the topic from a Bayesian point of view (a field of analysis with its own intricacies that need to be addressed). I believe the authors did a good job in presenting some of the latest space-time models proposed in research. However, there are big issues that are not covered in the book.
- The importance of convergence diagnostics for Bayesian models must be emphasized one way or another when discussing these types of methods. The book pretty much does not touch on convergence at all.
- Research has shown that Matern covariance parameters such as the smoothing parameter and the range, cannot be consistently estimated. This may lead to convergence problems when using MCMC techniques to extract characteristics from the posteriors of these parameters of interest (I found out about this the hard way as a grad student). As a result, at best, only partially reliable inference from your Bayesian analysis may be obtained, a disappointing fact given how computationally intensive Bayesian methods are for space-time models. Considering the major issue, space-time Bayesian models can hardly be called state of the art (as tagged several times in the book). Sadly, this convergence issue is not mentioned at all in the book which would lead to frustration for those constructing these models to try to understand a process of interest.
- Kriging is referred to as the Best Linear Unbiased Predictor. In theory this is true, but this is assuming the spatial covariance parameters are known, which is not really the case in practice. Although this often does not affect much the results if the Gaussian distribution assumption holds, it may drastically affect prediction variances for non-Normal distributions. Cressie has done work on the subject. It appears this issue is not discussed in the book though and if so, it should be clearly emphasized.
- Fixed Rank Kriging (FRK) is referred to as a best linear unbiased predictor. Is it not! In fact, since in practice kriging is often implemented by plugging in estimated parameters into the equations (making the the resulting estimated best linear unbiased predictor an approximation), FRK is truly an approximation of an approximation of the best linear unbiased predictor.
The book proposes its methods as a way to conduct science the way it ought to be: in a critical way, transparent, reproducible and in an objective manner. But the points brought up above makes the book a bit disappointing since it is not critical about the methods that are proposed, which although useful, are certainly not perfect. If there is a new edition in the future, I suggest the authors cover some important material left out and also address some challenges faced when implementing these methods.

Very comprehensive and clear coverage of formal mathematical spatiotemporal statistics

This is a massive, and authoritative treatise on spatio-temporal statistics. It focuses on formal mathematical treatments, and the maths can be intense, but if you really want to understand the theoretical underpinnings, and the tradeoffs between different approaches, this is a great book.

I really like the attention to detail and couching everything in terms a hierarchy of models: Data (the connection between your actual measured values and the underlying "real" quantities), Process (the connection between the "real" quantities and the processes that create them), and Parameters (the parameters that characterize the process; the parameter model is intimately related to Bayesian priors). Cressie and Wikle's clarity about the distinctions between these different levels in the hierarchy really help me to clearly understand things that are blurred in other treatments.

The authors take a largely Bayesian approach to modeling and analysis and present it clearly and compellingly. If you're serious about working with spatiotemporal data, this book belongs right next to Box and Jenkins on your bookshelf.

good but anticipate the next edition

This book contains some interesting topics like Kriging method and Kalman filtering. These two topics currently are used in Meteorological operation units, but not so many Meteorologists are familiar with. The authors combining the differential equations and probability models are very good try especially using different typing colors for different models; e.g. blue for process, green for data, red for posterior. However, the derivations of the equations are not so clear. The authors neither gave more details about the equations nor introduced the background motivations; for example, not introduce Kalman filtering's covariance update form from where. After all, this is a book not a journal papers. Anyway, I anticipate the next edition and hope the authors can discuss these things more.
On the other hand, not about the contents of the book, the printing quality of the book is not good. It seems just using low-end and low-resolution laser printer to print this book. The words are blurred, and probably one droplet water can make the words faint. Also, the layout is poor like the lectures in class. I totally agree with one previous reviewer saying the bad printing quality of this book.

Dr. El-Haik is a well-known author, consultant, and speaker on the subject. Throughout his career Dr. El-Haik trained, certified, coached, and mentored over 400 belts (Green Belts, Black Belts, and Master Black Belts) in DFSS and Six Sigma in both tracks: product and service (transactional).

RAID AL-AOMAR, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Industrial Engineering at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). Dr. Al-Aomar has worked for several years as a consultant on Simulation and Lean Manufacturing at General Motors and Ford Motor Company in Detroit and as an adjunct faculty member at Wayne State University.

Handy Reference

In reading the book I find the outline to be well organized on tasked subject. The authors are considered experts in the field of Six Sigma and particularly respected in the emergent area of DFSS. The authors have suggested a treatment based upon a good foundation on the subject and followed by a very complete introduction of Six Sigma tools. Subsequent to the tools presentation, there are several applications to the service (transactional) and manufacturing industries that include case studies.

I believe this book to be important for two reasons. First of all, this will be a very comprehensive presentation of Six Sigma methodologies (DMAIC and DFSS) as suited to simulation applications in a very integrated format. In addition, this book is a model of Six Sigma application for broad and important transactional-based process industrial arenas, service and manufacturing. The application of simulation-based Six Sigma and DFSS in several industries is a very important area for new product and service development and will significantly benefit from the integrated application of Six Sigma methodologies.

The manufacturing and service industries will both benefit from this manuscript, in particular companies that are relatively new in their implementation for Six Sigma and who just discovering the value of prevention in new product development (DFSS opportunity). Dr. Basem Haik is one of a very few practicing professional that possesses expertise in the area of `concept optimization' and the only one I know of that has authored books that treat these development methodologies in a truly integrated fashion.

I highly recommend that this book for any practioner in the area of Lean Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma.

About the Author
HOWARD EISNER, DSc, has managed and carried out research and development programs in systems and software engineering for more than forty-five years, in both industrial and academic environments. He served as executive vice president of ORI, Inc. and vice president of Atlantic Research Corporation (ARC). Currently, he is Professor at The George Washington University. Dr. Eisner has given tutorials for INCOSE (International Council on Systems Engineering), has over 100 papers to his credit and has had many of his articles published in the Washington Business Journal.

Systems Engineering: Intermediate to advanced level

It is a great book, although I would not suggest as a first book on systems engineering and/or systems management (in this case I'd recommend the other book of the same author). Has some material on Complex and Systems of Systems, Software Reuse, and Off The Shelf Systems, and Managing its development.

The book has two rather interesting chapters:

i) 14 - "THINKING IN GROUPS": where it presents the differences of individual thinking as opposed to group thinking, as well as some commonly used methods. Unfortunately this chapter only scratches the surface of each topic (Dr. Eisner, please write a book on this subject!!); and
ii) 15 - "WIDENING THE CIRCLE": where it presents some approaches (as the author refers), such as: TRIZ, Thinking like Leonardo, The Art of Problem Solving, Einstein, Breakthrough Thinking, Creativity, among others.

It has no exercises at the end of each chapter.

I recommend it for students, managers and practitioners.

Wise advices for dealing with complexity

Professor Eisner argues that dealing with complexity is a paramount for the modern technological organization. By having a huge academic and business experience Professor Eisner presents 9 ways of think out sides the box, which means a broad way to look at problems brought about by complexity. Written in a almost informal language this book is pleasant reading that will help a great deal those who must overcome complexity.

As a student who had this as a textbook, I can tell you that this is the last book you want to read IF your goal is managing complex systems. In point of fact, this book is nothing less than an "in-the-box" approach to identifying that which is out of the box. Can you hackney the hackneyed? Eisner has proven it so...

Do not buy this book, even if it is in your syllabus.

I'd give six stars if I could!

This book is clear, concise, and effective. I've read the first four chapters so far, and it has explained everything I've wanted to know about choosing mutual funds. I was absolutely ecstatic when I saw that the chapter on mutual fund management has an overview of the pros and cons of a number of the well-known fund companies.

One of the reviewers was complaining that this book relies too heavily on Morningstar research. Well, first of all, Morningstar is one of the premier analysis firms in the industry, and as such they have a wealth of great information. Secondly, I have yet to see a place in the book where they ask you to pay for anything. A good portion of the Morningstar website is free, and the book mentions a Morningstar mutual fund book you can get from public libraries. The reviewer also complains about the Morningstar 5-star rating system. The book explains that the star ratings can be used as a screening tool, and stresses the many other factors that should be considered when evaluating a fund. When used in conjunction with other objective criteria, the star rating is a powerful tool to evaluate past returns and volatility.

With all of this in mind, if you are absolutely new to investing, you should become familiar with certain basic investing terms and concepts before reading this book. I highly recommend either The Wall Street Journal's Complete Guide to Personal Finance or The WSJ's Complete Money and Investing Guidebook. For most people, I would say the Guide to Personal Finance would be a good primer.

Good discussion of Mutual Fund investing from the experts

Morningstar is the recognized name in evaluating mutual funds. This book shares some of their insight. The advice is fairly straightforward and not earth-shaking: set your goals, pick an assett allocation in line with your goals and risk tolerance, diversify. From there they go into picking funds addressing such things as evaluating fund manager, looking at costs, judging past performance etc. I found the book helpful, but I am more philosophically aligned with the advice in Bogle's book (Common Sense on Mutual Funds : New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor by John C. Bogle) that emphasizes index funds. I thinking chasing hot funds can almost be as bad as chasing hot stocks. Finally, the book deals strictly with mutual funds. Probably need a second reference to fully deal with you investment life (insurance, etc).

Good book, but I would recommend another.

This book provided a good broad-based overview of mutual funds and endorses modern portfolio theory. The idea being that a properly allocated portfolio of mutual funds with a focus towards long-term investing will work the best for most investors building their retirement savings. Properly balanced over the years, this style will work better than that of active investors trying to chase hot funds and time the market since very few active managers succeed over the long haul.

If you were to look at a "Top 10" performing mutual fund from 10 or 5 years ago, chances are it isn't a Top 10 fund anymore so you shouldn't buy into the hype of today's current "hot fund". If it were such a solid fund, shouldn't it be a solid fund 10 years later? But this book and similar ones feel that while an active investor and a hot fund may have one good year, they probably have bad years as well, and they probably can't keep up their above-average performance over 30 years.

I read this book along with "All About Asset Allocation" by Richard Ferri and "The Only Guide to a Winning Investment Strategy You'll Ever Need: The Way Smart Money Invests Today" by Larry Swedroe all of which cover similar ground (an overview of mutual funds, an overview of modern portfolio theory). My favorite is the Swedroe book because of it's straightforward reading style, and it goes a little more in-depth than the Morningstar book.

The Morningstar book only gets 3 stars because unfortunately Morningstar has a product to sell: namely, Morningstar itself. Morningstar makes money buy getting you to use their services (such as their web site) and rely on their ranking system and advice all of which comes through in this book. Morningstar's 5-Star ranking system can create some of the problems Hot Top 10 Funds lists create: they tempt everyone into thinking if it's a 5-star fund it HAS to be good so why not buy the hot 5-star fund that posted a 30% return last year? Why would anyone buy a 5-star fund with a 12% return? But not all of Morningstar's 5-star funds stay 5-star funds so you have to look past the hype when deciding for yourself if a fund is good for you for the next 5, 10, 20 years. The book was okay but be mindful of the Morningstar product placement. The Swedroe book gets my recommendation.

When Hugh Hefner quit his job at Esquire to start a magazine called Playboy, he didn't just want to make money. He wanted to make dreams come true. The first issue of Playboy had a Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, an article on the Dorsey brothers, and a feature on desk design for the modern office, called ""Gentlemen, Be Seated."" Hefner wrote much of the copy himself and drew all the cartoons. But the most memorable part by far was the set of pictures he bought from a local calendar printer of a scantily clad Marilyn Monroe.
In this wise and penetrating biography, intellectual historian Steven Watts looks at what Hugh Hefner went onto become, and how he took America with him. Hefner became one of the most hated and envied celebrities in America, dating a long list of his magazine's beauties and always standing just barely on the wrong side of decency and moral uprightness. Hef's Not Only Living the Dream, He Created It

I've been waiting a long time for the definitive biography of Hugh Hefner, a guy I've always had a certain fascination and admiration for - and here it is. Not just a shallow pop bio, this is a highly readable, insightful, and entertaining look into the life and times of one of pop culture's most recognizable, controversial, and ultimately beloved icons.

Mr. Playboy digs past the popular assumptions about Hef and even his own self-created image to lay bare the truth about the man who was the tip of the spear of the sexual revolution, and who literally invented the lifestyle of the modern playboy. The author does a great job of situating the Playboy phenomenon and its creator in the larger social, political, and cultural setting. The book even includes material on the successful The Girls Next Door reality TV show, so it's as up-to-date as it could possibly be.

Lots of good photos, including - naturally - a centerfold. It's a wild ride. If you have any interest or curiosity at all in the man and the magazine, you won't be disappointed by this book.

PROFESSOR WATTS ISN'T OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW....

I figure guys my age and olders owe a lot to Hugh Hefner. And it disturbs me when those who came years after us simply don't realize, much less understand, his enormous contributions.

Prior to the first issue of "Playboy," which reached newsstands in December 1953, men's magazines, if they were anything other than about sports, automobile mechanics or woodworking, were primarily on the trashy side.

Let's start with "Police Gazette" and count them off from there.

Most, printed on newsprint with poor art, graphics and composition, featured mindless articles thats purpose was a shallow attempt to stimulate libido, and pumped up more with photos of girls standing on their tip-toes obviously with their poking-chests the products of Frederick's of Hollywood bullet bras.

Esquire attempted to be the men's magazine bible, but it was so stodgy that it missed the mark.

So Mr. Hefner took it upon himself to design and produce a graphically artistic men's magazine, and print it on slick paper, slick paper just like "Town and Country," "Vogue," and "Vanity Fair" were.

He found known experts to write about jazz and theater and cars and cooking and manners and how to dress. He added photographs of young women who could have easily lived next door to Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. Maybe next door to me, too.

There were short stories by the same writers who were frequently published in the "New Yorker" and "Harpers."

There were business essays by one of the world's most-wealthy, J. Paul Getty.

Mr. Hefner made sure men discovered Shel Silverstein and cartoonist Gahan Wilson. We found out for ourselves that art could be something more relevant for us than the Mona Lisa because of the excitingly colorful paintings of artist Leroy Neiman.

Somewhere in the `60s, Mr. Hefner researched and wrote "The Playboy Philosophy." It discussed and drew supported conclusions on sex, religion and politics. It caused readers to think, evaluate and debate. Many, for the first time, determined precisely how they felt about some matters of life. Probably many disagreed with Mr. Hefner, but either way, that was a good thing.

Dr. Steven Watts is the chairman of the history department at the University of Missouri in Columbia. If my math is correct, he and "Playboy" were both born circa 1953.

Professor Watts wrote "Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream." Rather than talk about and discuss what Mr. Hefner brought to readers like me, readers who were at least teenagers in 1953, the story Professor Watts preferred to weave was about the shallow romantic life that Mr. Hefner has led for more than fifty years.

I think Professor Watts' book is a disservice to Mr. Hefner, and I'm inclined to think it is because he was never a boy much less a man before Mr. Hefner took it upon himself to teach males how to be cultured.

He just doesn't get it, and we shouldn't expect him to.

Perhaps someday some insightful, older author will tell about the important Hugh Hefner contributions and what they have meant to American men and women. It's long past due.

Meanwhile, thank you Mr. Hefner.

Disappointing.....boring!

This book is SO BORING. The author writes the same stuff over, over and over again. The book could be 1/2 the size it is. I'm getting to the last chapters and finally it is getting a bit more interesting. I won't recommend this book to anyone.

Light on content, disorganized

This book has some good sections, which are fine by themselves. However, I found the power chapters in the first part of the book to be disorganized and poorly written. The diagrams are not clear at all, and many have a lot of information in them that should have been removed. Almost like they did cut and paste without making them relevant to the text. Many diagrams are missing labels and annotations as well. There is a chapter on power quality that starts with a very dubious analogy about grades of gasoline and sports cars and the importance of using high quality power. Then the start of the next chapter says that modern equipment can use a large range of voltages and really power quality isn't important, availability of power is. Uh...great. So, I feel the continuity of the book was poor. I haven't finished everything, but so far, I am not impressed.

As far as the content that is there, I don't feel this is really an engineering oriented book. I didn't feel there were enough methods to really made decisions about availability or reliability, just general ideas, which we all have anyway (downtime is bad, uptime is good, etc).

I don't feel it really helps you understand WHY things are, mainly it rehashes industry best practices, which in many cases are driven by the vendors who are selling products used to increase services availability. There is an interesting appendix about the national power infrastructure, but it covers a lot of things that are already in the book, which is kinda strange. This is a collection of articles, not a book really.
