The Brightest Stars
By Lois Spangler
The Brightest Stars by Fred Schaff is an easy to read and highly informative book which uses the sky's most brilliant stars as a way to guide readers to discover the Universe.
The book is divided into three sections. In the first and second sections, Schaff explains how to locate the brightest stars as well as some of the major constellations. The reader also learns the basics of making astronomical observations, the nature of stars, their locations and yearly motions, and the various kinds of stars. This background will provide teachers with a greater understanding of ways to study our Universe.
The third section of this book provides the reader with a unique look at the brightest stars. It provides chapter-by- chapter profiles of each of the brightest stars, as well as detailed information about what to look for in the observational experience of the star, including the star's season and relationship in its constellation. Each profile also offers the lore and legends connected with the star. Schaff uses these as a measure of what the human race as a whole has found interesting and individual about the stars.
I highly recommend The Brightest Stars by Fred Schaff to any k - 12 teacher who teaches astronomy units, or are interested in astronomy. Additionally, reading this book will enable teachers to provide outdoor astronomy lessons. Teachers will be able to help their students locate and name specific stars and constellations in the night sky. I would also recommend this book to middle school and high school language arts teachers who are teaching students to write about science folklore and legends. The third section provides a wealth of background information for those teachers.

Very Good Book
By BlueBerry
I enjoyed reading this book. Its well written and very relevant to what you actually see when you look up at the night sky - whether in the country or the city. The book starts with a synopsis of necessary principles of magnitude, constellations, sky conditions, stellar life cycle, etc and then goes into a description of each of the 21 brightest stars in the sky. Descriptions include all the relevant details such as position, lore, scientific measurements, and interesting facts among other things. The back of the book includes concise appendices and tables of information and a glossary. I found this book to be a great addition to my astronomy library.

The Brightest Stars
By Jim Colyer
Fred Schaaf devotes a chapter to each of the 21 first magnitude stars. This is remarkable when you realize that not long ago the stars were mere points of light in the sky. Sirius is the brightest star, and Fred Schaaf revels in its hues. Canopus is in Carina the keel, and I saw it while in Australia. The Alpha Centauri system contains the closest star at 4.4 light-years, 25 trillion miles. Arcturus has burned its hydrogen and is now burning helium. Vega is a blue-white sapphire dominating the Summer Triangle. Capella is a double star. In Norse mythology, Rigel was a big toe of the giant Orwandil. Procyon is pronounced pro-SY-on. Achernar is the least famous of the first magnitude stars, isolated at the river's end. Betelgeuse in Orion is the most famous star. Hadar is a name for Beta Centauri. In the movie, Forbidden Planet, the action takes place on the 4th planet from Altair. Acrux is Alpha Crucis in the Southern Cross. Aldebaran is the bull's-eye in Taurus, converting helium into carbon. Spica means "ear of wheat." Antares is one of the first magnitude star that can be occulted. Astronomers think Pollux has a Jupiter-like planet. Fomalhaut is the mouth of the southern fish. Becrux is Beta Crucis, also called Mimosa. Deneb means "tail," and Deneb is the tail of the swan. Regulus is a flat star.
