Landforming: An Environmental Approach to Hillside Development, Mine Reclamation and Watershed Restoration, by Horst J. Schor, Donald H. G

The first hands-on instruction guide to landform grading and revegetation

Landform grading provides a cost-effective, attractive, and environmentally compatible way to construct slopes and other landforms that are stable and that blend in with the natural surroundings. Landform grading design and construction technology have advanced rapidly during the past decade, and this book explains the technique, its uses, its various applications, and its significant advantages.

Landforming: An Environmental Approach to Hillside Development, Mine Reclamation and Watershed Restoration, presents the first comprehensive and practical guidebook to the innovative techniques of landform grading and revegetation.

Citing numerous practical applications in such areas as hillside housing developments, mass grading operations, surface mining and watershed reclamation projects, the authors--one an internationally recognized instructor and the other an engineer with over thirty years of practical experience in the field--have teamed up to provide valuable information on:

  • The aesthetic and ecological benefits of landform grading and revegetation
  • Analyses that demonstrate the stability of landform designed slopes
  • Real-world design/construction procedures
  • Construction in both upland slope areas and in stream corridors
  • Analytical procedures and design aids to assist implementation
  • Well documented and comprehensive case studies of actual projects

Written in straightforward language and liberally illustrated with informative photographs and schematic drawings, the text should prove of value to practicing professionals in such diverse fields as land planning, civil  and geotechnical engineering, landscape architecture, and geology as well as to personnel in a variety of local, state and federal regulatory agencies and environmental interest groups.

HORST J. SCHOR is the originator of the Landforming and Revegetation Concept and is Principal of H.J. Schor Consulting. He has developed landform grading designs that have been implemented in a variety of hillside grading and mining reclamation projects for a diverse list of clients. He has been a guest lecturer at The University of Wisconsin-Madison, The University of Dresden, Germany and The University of California at Irvine.

DONALD H. GRAY, PHD, is Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of Michigan. In addition to speaking and teaching internationally, he has co-authored three books on subjects related geotechnical engineering and biotechnical slope protection.

Landforming: An Environmental Approach to Hillside Development.
By R Grobler
I purchased this book based on a recommendation from a friend who sang its praises. So far I'm very impressed with the information provided. I would like to include his review, with which I concur:

This text is essential to professionals involved in planning and designing landforms. The book addresses important aspects critical to shaping, forming and rehabilitation of landforms and includes useful information on hydrology, soils and materials, surficial erosion and geotechnical mass stability amongst others.

It addresses large scale earth moving and soil preparation considerations required to transform barren and lifeless landscapes into stable and sustainable landforms.

Schor provides compelling reasons for designing landforms with not only a short- but also a long-term land use and functioning thereof in mind. This approach not only results in increased rehabilitation success but also supports a carefully planned future land use. Information is also provided on how to integrate environmental planning and design principles. Applying landforming principles such as varying slope forms, - gradients, and - lengths with various coverings mimicking or imitating natural landforms may result in something which is truly sustainable. A technique with wide applications
By John Kretzmann
This book describes a technique for shaping landforms that honors the ways nature wants landforms to look and to function. It creates landforms with less erosion, more variability for better ecological functioning, and great aesthetics. It could have, and should have, wide application in civil engineering (including major earthworks along highways and landfills), mine reclamation, subdivision development, and landscape architecture.

Landform Grading produces environmentally compatible, attractive, and cost-effective results
By Alan B. Clarke, FASLA
I am a Landscape Architect and have known about Mr. Schor's Landform Grading concepts and recommendations for many years. After re-reading Landforming I understand how his creative and thoughtful approach to land development has been so successful. Mr. Schor's education and background combines geology, civil engineering and land development planning with exceptional results.

Typically, hillside development plans with conventional, linear grading designs are difficult for governing agencies to review and approve due to the aesthetically unnatural results. These plans often create politically uncomfortable situations and generate controversy and opposition from the public and environmental groups. The examples in Landforming show the value of not only curving, but actually replicating natural slope configurations and mimicking entire landforms i.e. valleys, ridgelines, etc. They rarely face government and public opposition.

His approach to Landform grading combines natural slope forms, creative (and very successful) drainage devices, and landscape planting designs in harmony with the original topographic and geomorphic features. His work restores either the original underlying topography or characteristics of the nearby, surrounding undisturbed terrain. After opponents understand the unique qualities of his designs they usually become supporters.

The book includes many case studies of completed projects. His first constructed project, the Anaheim Hills 4,300 acre Hillside Planned Community caused the City of Anaheim to revise the Grading Ordinance. The ordinance now requires contour grading restricting continuous linear slopes and blending all graded areas with the natural environment.
