Provides a nice overview of non-profit law

Bruce Hopkins is a well-known expert in the area of non-profit law. He has written several ponderous tomes on various aspects of the subject, which are primarily useful to attorneys in the field.
This volume is different. Divided in chapters by subject area, it provides a useful overview for non-experts who have an interest in the subject (e.g., a person who has just been elected to a non-profit board and wants to obtain an overview of his or her responsibilities and possible problems).
As it becomes increasingly clear that non-profit organizations are plagued with many of the same problems as for-profit corporations, this book will become even more useful.

A Useful, Practical, and Handy Overview of Foundations and Nonprofits

I have to agree with (as of this writing) the other 5-star review of this title.
This book helped keep me from tearing my hair out when I became involved in the world of nonprofits. For anyone starting a foundation, working in a foundation, contemplating giving to a foundation, or trying to assess whether a foundation is doing its due diligence, this is an excellent place to start.
As is previously noted, the book is divided into easily digested sections, including:
*General Operations of a NonProfit Organization
*Boards of Directors and Conflicts and Liabilities
*Expenditure of Funds
*Acquiring Tax-Exempt Status
*Annual Returns, etc.
Each section begins with a question about the section under discussion, and the questions begin with a basic overview ("What is a nonprofit organization?") and proceed to questions involved with various aspects of foundations ("Does the standard of fiduciary responsibility apply to every expense incurred by a charitable organization?").
No, an attorney who specializes in tax law or foundation law will probably not need this book. I don't think it was written for them. It was written for those interested in starting a foundation or working for/with a foundation. The layout of the book almost seems to anticipate the questions one might have in this area and attempts to answer these questions directly and succinctly. If you were asked to serve on the board of a foundation, this book can give you the overview you'd need to understand your role, as well as many of the Dos and Don'ts of foundation giving and operation.
I'm grateful to have it on my shelf. Highly recommended.

Not useful if you need to know the authority

This book contains a wealth of information on nonprofit law. Unfortunately, there are virtually no citations to the authority forming the basis for the explanations. I suppose some lay people might not mind this. But a lawyer not specializing in the field (or even a specialist) or an officer of a nonprofit needs more than pronouncements from on high. Sometimes a simple citation to the IRC or regs would be helpful. In other cases, the information is so specific that a citation is definitely called for, but missing. For example (p. 137): "Q. Has any litigation concerning the intermediate sanctions rules been initiated?" "Yes, there is litigation concerning these rules in the system. Only one case has been decided, however, and that is on appeal." Unfortunately, the author doesn't tell us what the case is.
So, having spent the rather high purchase price, I think I'll have to go looking again...
