the sole reason I got a 5 on my AP Human Geography test

This book is insightful, detailed, and interesting. I actually didn't fall asleep reading it- now if only that were true for my history textbooks! This was my textbook for an AP Human Geography class I took at my school. The teacher was barely adequate, and I basically taught myself everything from this book. H.J. de Blij knows how to write well. He doesn't just give you facts, either. You're taught how to spacially analyze worldwide phenomena, not just to memorize place names. He covers everything from political geography to urban landscapes to environmental science.

This textbook is also great if you simply want to know more about the world we live in, and wish to learn from a more international, rather than American-centric, point of view.

A Very Good Book for understanding Human Geography

As someone who holds Masters degrees in both History and Social Studies Education and actually TEACHES AP Human Geography to high school freshmen, I can safely say that DeBlij and co. have come up with a winner in the new edition. I'll admit the 7th edition was filled with misrepresentations, but the new version is such an improvement, that I have discarded the often inaccurate Rubinstein book for this one.

For those who suggest buying "Geography for Dummies" be my guest. I'll just let the title speak for itself. If you look at AP Central- the home of the College Board tests, the AP Human Geography test contains about 9-10% on the basic fundamentals of geography including physical geography. DeBlij covers more than its adequate share of the subject- outside of the instructor teaching the course.

One of my favorite textbooks

I used this text in my Cultural Geography course last semester. I'm not usually one to read my textbooks, but this one was really interesting, reader friendly, and filled with lots of current examples (there's even photos of Lindsay Lohan and Tony Hawk). I'm not selling this one back (and for a starving college student--that's really saying something!)

This is a great book for learning about normal and abnormal child behaviors. One great advantage is that the book uses as its reference the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition, text revision(DSM-IV-TR). The book also presents 'case studies' where you can read each case and understand and to try to identify if it is a one is suffering from a condition or it is consider normal depending with each one's personality, behavior or interests. It is great not only for a classroom but also for anyone wanting to get to understand behaviors that to one may seem abnormal but to others it's just that person's personality, behavior and creativeness that makes every single one of us 'unique'. About the Author
Cornelis ( Kase ) Klein is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in geology from McGill University, Canada, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University, also in geology. He has been a member of the geology faculty at Harvard University; Indiana University, Bloomington; and the University of New Mexico; he has taught courses in mineralogy at all these universities. His published books include Manual of Mineralogy (19th 21st eds.); Manual of Mineral Science (22nd 23rd eds.); and Minerals and Rocks: Exercises in Crystal and Mineral Chemistry, Crystallography, X-Ray Powder Diffraction, Mineral and Rock Identifi cation, and Ore Mineralogy (3rd ed., 2008). He has received two awards for excellence in teaching from the University of New Mexico.

Manual of Mineral Science (23rd ed.) Top in Field!

This new edition has made several improvements over the last one. The organization is clearer and better prepared. This book provides a better explanation and more detailed examples than other books of this type. The CD is a great asset for readers in comprehending the heirarchy of crystal organization and provides better visualization of the three-dimensional aspects of the various crystal forms and structures.

Not for the light of heart.

This is a great book for those who want a very in depth and comprehensive understanding of mineralogy. However, with no prior knowledge in chemistry or geology this book is very hard to understand. It is also very hard to read. It does not flow and is very analytical. It does have so very useful things though. It has a description and breakdown of most minerals and a great mineral index. If your serious and have prior background, get it.

Great book, *after* an introduction to the topic...

Into the 5th week of Mineralogy class, this book *then* became extremely informative - this is not a self-instructional manual, and I do not believe it was intended to be so. Most students will find the writing style in this text a bit intellectually heady, having been written by a distinguished Harvard PhD professor. It could have been written more concisely, perhaps more simplisticly, but all the information is there, and from what I understand, past editions were more comprehensive than this 22nd edition. I personally love this text, and only *after* an introduction to the subject will this text make real sense to the reader. And yes, I agree with the previous posts regarding certain statements about crystal structures that require some sort of base level knowledge of chemistry or physics or math (i.e. symmetry concepts) in order to fully comprehend a particular passage, but that's what you get from an Ivy League PhD-er! I believe this text was designed for the third year student who should already have taken 1 semester each of at least chemistry and calculus. Although calculus isn't necessary for the class, it presupposes that you know and understand some basic conceptual geometry.

I would suggest reading some basic introduction to mineralogy websites before tackling this book. Also, I have found that for the conscientious mineralogy students who possess a "more refined" reading level and who are putting genuine effort into the class, this book is a valuable edition. Other texts simply do not cover as much material as found here, such as x-ray diffraction and optics. Overall meant for students and not the self-taught, although that depends on the individual, but in general I would not recommend this for the beginner who wants to learn on his/her own. Still, a great text. Try getting some olders editions with less sub-subjects edited out for a real comprehensive text!

Don't Ignore This Valuable Book on the Balanced Scorecard

As a strategist I have hundreds of Kindle books on strategy at my disposal. I frequently look at the reviews both before and after I buy a book, and I noticed that this useful book had only one review. I like to read long and interesting reviews, but today you will have to look elsewhere, as I simply want to endorse Niven's works (he has others that you should look into also), as well as Norton and Kaplan's excellent books. I keep waiting for a book on the balanced scorecard by Art Schneiderman (who stakes his claim for being the originator and when I talked to him was very relaxed and busy working on staking up his tomatoes!). Yes, strategists want elegant solutions but strategy execution has to be in concert with the capability maturity of the organization with respect to strategy, strategic planning, and (gasp) even scenario planning.
If you are involved in any kind of strategic planning effort, learn about the balanced scorecard. Get your organization to buy this and all of Niven's books, buy all of the Norton and Kaplan books, and tell your spouse you are going to be busy reading about a dozen books! And if your organization won't spend the money, buy them out of your own pocket. It's about you being smarter about strategy and strategy execution!

Bottom line - don't ignore this book if you are interested in measuring your strategic efforts!

Why Scorecards don't work - and how to solve it

Why do as many as half of all balanced scorecard users not achieve the results they hoped for? Doesn't the balanced scorecard work in practice?

David Niven is an expert on Balanced Scorecard and his first book was an easy-to-read, well-structured manual of how to make scorecards work: "Balanced scorecard - step-by-step" (2002). It bridged the gap between practice and theory - especially for newcomers to the concept.

In this new book, Niven tries to bridge another emerging gap. It is the gap between those questioning the usefulness of balanced scorecard, based on the many unsuccessful implementation attempts, and what people like Niven (and I) believe to be reality: that the scorecard framework remains sound, but must be instituted with rigor and discipline if you expect to get results.

Why aren't many scorecard users happy?
Niven believes that the trouble lies in the methods used to implement the Balanced Scorecard. Many firms have been lured by the seductive simplicity of the scorecard model, believing it could be easily implemented and produce results with a minimum of care and feeding. According to Niven, troubled implementations stem from many sources, e.g.
- A lack of executive sponsorship to reinforce the Scorecard's value within the organization,
- Tired [lagging] metrics reflecting the past with no regard to the drivers of future success, and
- Management systems that continue to reward unbalanced, largely financial, performance

How do we solve it?
Niven's approach is basically to put Kaplan and Norton's five principles of the "Strategy-Focused Organization" (2001) into a more practical approach. The messages, obviously, are the same. But Niven manages to make it easier to comprehend. And he challenges the reader throughout the book. The diagnostics dimension of the book is furthermore incorporated at the end of each of the nine chapters where we find self-assessment questions.

This week I went to a conference in Copenhagen where Harvard-professor Robert Kaplan spoke about the balanced scorecard. Kaplan, being one of the inventors, acknowledged that too many balanced scorecards did not succeed. It is a paradox, since the balanced scorecard was incepted to overcome to problem that strategies weren't properly implemented. But if the system (or scorecard) to finally make the strategy implementation work doesn't work either, then we're in real trouble. So is the concept, of course.

Kaplan's suggestion to make a successful implementation of the scorecard is - like Niven's - to view it as a change project. The change programme goes thru three phases: mobilization (unfreezing), alignment (change), and sustainment (re-freezing). Kaplan specified the details as described below:

1st phase: MOBILIZATION ("the case for change"):
Principle: #1 Mobilize change thru Executive leadership

But I also recommend a very capable book by the Swedes Olve et al (2003) - "Making Scorecards Actionable: Balancing Strategy and Control" - that also focuses on why balanced scorecards go wrong - and what to do about it.

If you're even more interested in performance measurement systems, then do also consider "Performance Prism" by Neely et al (2002) that takes performance systems to the next level. Personally, I don't believe they've designed balanced scorecard's successor, but they have many interesting perspectives on stakeholders, choice of measurements, and the relationship between cause and effect.

There is a lot of great wisdom in this book! The other thing I think is great is that since there are 37 different contributors to this book, if you connect with the style of one person, you will then know if that person has authored any of their own books, that you will know what to buy next. You will definitely find something in this book that appeals to your style.

Best networking marketing for beginners and advanced

I'll keep this short. I purchased 6 different network marketing books, this was the best of the bunch. It covers everything very well. Provides accurate info for current times. It offers good resources. First half of the book are Goals and Attitude, last half of book gets into the nuts and bolts of direct selling. Excellent read.

Challenging the very basis of digital circuit design

I found this recently published book absolutely riveting. It is destined to change the very basis of digital systems design and potentially the basis of programming and software engineering as well. Its author, Karl Fant, is the principal of Theseus Research [...] and founder of spin-off company Theseus Logic [...]

He holds 29 patents in various aspects of digital design and is, without doubt, one of the most profound thinkers on the fundamentals of digital design and computer science. On his website there are a number of papers challenging the very basis of computer science [...] model.htm

He challenges many accepted "obvious" truths. According to Karl:

* "Boolean logic" is expressively incomplete as the basis for circuit design as it requires some other means for expressing the timing relationships needed to guarantee correct computing results. He replaces Boolean logic with his 2 state Null Convention Logic (2NCL) with amazing results.

* Concurrency is the most basic and most general model of computing, with sequential processing as a special case.

* Computer science as the science and theory of process expression rather than the science of algorithms.

* Replacing the notion of variable and thereby eliminating a large number of logical and expressive problems.

This work is immensely practical. A logically and expressively complete method for designing asynchronous circuits should result in circuits and chips that are faster; consume less power; make better use of use on-chip real estate; and produce less radio interference.

The potential to specify software fully without the need to deal separately with timing issues is very exciting indeed.

For the past 40 odd years most computers and computer-based devices have been designed as clock-driven or synchronous devices. This was not always so. The early computers such as the ENIAC and UNIVAC were asynchronous, largely because clocked synchronicity had not yet been fully figured out.

In the early 50s and 60s there were several University-based research projects to develop explicitly architectures including the University of Manchester (UK) MU5 project ([...]) and the University of Illinois ILLIAC I and ILLIAC II computer series (See the book "Asynchronous System Design by Chris J Myers 2001, John Wiley and Sons, Inc and [...] One of the last commercially viable fully asynchronous computers was the first PDP-10 (Digital Equipment), the KA 10 designed by a team led by Alan Kotok.

There are currently a number of asynchronous design research projects in Universities and industry. Ivan Sutherland and Jo Ebergen of SUN summarised a lot of the current work in Computers Without Clocks, Scientific American, 15 July 2002.

What Mr. Fant has done that is unique is provide a solid universal logical theory that, for the first time encompasses all of the known special cases and much more besides.

About the Author
CHRISTOPHER L. CULP, PhD, is Director of Risk Management Consulting Services, Inc., in Chicago and Bern, Switzerland; Senior Fellow in Financial Regulation at the Competitive Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C., an adjunct professor of finance at The University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business; and an Honorarprofessor (Adjunct Professor) at Unversität Bern in the Institut für Finanzmanagement. He consults actively in the areas of structured finance and insurance for (re)insurance companies and brokers, corporate users of structured products, asset managers, and law firms. Culp's previous books from Wiley include Risk Transfer: Derivatives in Theory & Practice, The Risk Management Process, The ART of Risk Management, and Corporate Aftershock (as coeditor with William Niskanen). Culp holds a PhD in finance from The University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business.

Outstanding Integrated View of Finance and Insurance

Culp's Structured Finance & Insurance provides a fantastic integration of insurance with the broader world of the financial services industry. Culp is one of the very best authors in this field and his focus on the economic substance of different transactions (e.g., letters of credit and reinsurance contracts) and securities is one of the book's greatest strengths.

I have now read this book several times and each time I can say that I have come away with both new thoughts about the financial transactions in question and new insight into the relationships across different finanacial instruments and institutions. Further, I have referred to Culp's text many times in my daily work, especially for its ability to clearly relate each transaction to its economic fundamentals.

I found the last section with guest authors to be somewhat uneven in quality, although some of these chapters have proven to be useful in their treatment of such issues as weather derivatives.

This is a very comprehensive textbook on a very interesting subject. Author can be ridiculously long-winded at times but the content is covered in great detail.
